Joe deals in illegal merchandise with both adults and children. He has everybody afraid of him and his boys. Jenny, Monty's ex-wife, is Joe's girlfriend and is given the profits of Joe's work. Throughout the movie we receive evidence that Joe deals in front of the church and to children. He has been arrested five times without conviction.

Julia is a "bull dog" lawyer according to Monty. He tells her this when he's in her office asking her if she will handle his custody case for his three children. Maya describes Julia to Monty as a woman who "wins every case" on Monty's first day as Julia's driver. Her father was also a lawyer before he retired to Florida.

Monty is a mechanic who dreams of owning his own shop, which he gets at the end of the movie. He tells Julia that he has big dreams... dreams of opening his own shop, while they are walking in the city.

Ms. Kat is Jenny's mother, and she has legal custody of the three children: Sierra, Lauryn and China. The first and only time we see her in the movie, she tells Monty he needs to file for custody because she has lung cancer, but she dies before he is able to.

Julia and Monty are working on his case after hours in Julia's office. When they walk out, there's a sign in that reads "Happy Birthday Julia". Monty notices the sign and asks her how old she is and after a brief argument, she replies "twenty twelve". Monty volunteers to drive Julia home, because she doesn't have a ride, but instead he takes her out for some fun as a birthday present.

Cynthia and Brenda appear many times throughout the movie. Their first appearance in the movie is when Monty is waiting for Julia outside of the car, and they get into it and wait for Julia. At this time, they tell Julia they've set her up for a blind date. They also appear together the day after Julia's birthday when she is glowing and they know it is because of a man, Monty.

Sierra, Lauryn and China walk from their mother and Joe's house to Monty's house at 3 o'clock in the morning because Joe hit China, and they feel they need to get out of the house. When Monty hears what happened, he goes off the deep end.

Monty is taking Julia home one night, and Maya keeps calling him on the phone. Since Maya is watching the kids, he tells Julia that he has to take the car. After he gets off the phone, he turns the car around and speeds off to the hospital. There he's told that there has been a fire in the house, and that until further notice Jenny and Joe will have custody of the three girls.

Sierra is 12 and the oldest of Monty's children. She is caught with illegal merchandise at school and the principal calls both Monty and Jenny. Monty arrives at the school first and asks Sierra where she got it, and she tells him it's from Joe. She also says that Joe told her if she didn't do it, he'd get his boys on Monty.

After Sierra tells Monty Joe hit China, Monty tells them they will stay at his house. Once they fall asleep, he leaves the house and drives his car right into the car Joe and Jenny are riding in. After the car is hit, a brawl involving much of the neighborhood begins. When the incident arises in court, nobody volunteers to be a witness so the case is dismissed.
