Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character, investigator Doug Carlin, was played by an actor well known for his roles in "Remember the Titans", "Crimson Tide" and "Philadelphia", amongst others. Who was this actor?

Answer: Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington played Doug Carlin, an ATF agent sent to investigate an explosion. Denzel's resume usually has him playing a fairly clean-cut, good guy, but sometimes he gets to play someone with a bit more emotional baggage. He wrestled with a bit of homophobia in "Philadelphia", was a brutal drug lord in "American Gangster" and a US Army Private with a chip on his shoulder in "Glory".

As Doug Carlin, however, he is a pretty straight-forward hero.
2. At the start of the film, something was destroyed by an explosion, killing many people. What was it?

Answer: A ferry

The ferry was carrying mostly US Navy personnel (from the USS Nimitz - a large banner indicated this) and their families. Once underway, a ferry worker noticed something peculiar about one of the vehicles the ferry was carrying, a red Ford Explorer (keys in the ignition, doors locked, radio was playing, no license plate). As he looked inside its rear cargo area, he could see some kind of intricate, wired apparatus. Some ominous, electronic beeping was heard. Right at that point, the bomb exploded, destroying the ferry and killing over 500 people.

Later we learn that a psychologically unstable man named Oerstadt, who had been denied enlistment in the Army and Marines, had driven the vehicle loaded with explosives on board.
3. For what government agency did Doug Carlin work?

Answer: ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms)

Technically, the organization known as the ATF is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Because the disaster involved an explosion, Carlin, an ATF investigator, was called upon to investigate. Early on he encountered several pieces of important evidence, but one in particular didn't quite add up: the body of a young woman, Claire, was discovered, washed on shore before the explosion.
4. Where did Doug Carlin, while searching for bomb residue, first meet FBI Agent Paul Pryzwarra?

Answer: Under a bridge

Along the shore, Carlin found fragments of blue plastic that he suspected were from barrels which had been used to house the explosives. However, he did not meet FBI agent Paul Pryzwarra until he started looking around on a bridge, under which he found a suspicious oily residue.
5. Perhaps better known for his earlier roles as Simon Templar in "The Saint" and as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in "Top Gun", who was the actor who played FBI agent Paul Pryzwarra?

Answer: Val Kilmer

Pryzwarra was impressed with Carlin's tenacity and insight on the bridge, and enlisted his help with the FBI's project. Pryzwarra and the rest of the FBI team were not really investigators - they were "tech" guys who needed Carlin's "detective" capabilities.

Kilmer played Batman in Tim Burton's 1995 "Batman Forever", and was an amazing Doc Holliday in 1993's "Tombstone". He was married to his "Willow" co-star, Joanne Whalley, from March 1988 to February 1996 and has two children with her.
6. When reviewing surveillance tapes of the area, from around the time of the explosion, what did Carlin notice?

Answer: A man on a motorcycle stopped on a bridge

Carlin noticed that a man had pulled over along the roadway shoulder on the bridge. What caught his attention was that the man stopped minutes BEFORE the explosion, making Carlin suspect that the motorcyclist was the bomber hoping to witness the detonation.
7. In what US port city, not often represented in movies, did the 2006 movie, Deja Vu, take place?

Answer: New Orleans, LA

When the ferry worker heard the radio playing from the bomber's truck, one could clearly hear a radio announcer, "It's 10:48 on Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras. Now let's go back in time to 1964, the Beach Boys. 105.3 FM - The Heart of New Orleans."

According to director Tony Scott, Long Island was to be the original setting for the story and New Orleans was picked later; Scott felt a city was a better setting for the story. He also felt it important to include some post-Hurricane Katrina footage in the film, though in the final cut, much of it was removed.
8. What solid object did Carlin pass back in time, to his desk?

Answer: A note

He sent the note for himself to read, but instead his partner saw it and tried to follow up, getting killed by the bomber for his trouble. Later on, Doug took a huge risk (to save the girl, Claire, of course!) and traveled back in time himself.
9. What was the nickname for the time-window device used throughout the movie?

Answer: Snow White

The FBI machine was first presented to ATF agent Carlin, as a sort of viewer into the past. It was explained to him that the system used stored data from seven orbiting satellites, hence the "Snow White" moniker.

However, Carlin soon realized that he was looking at the actual past (and not at some stored data). He quipped, "...but which one of the seven dwarves can explain to me how you get the audio?". Later, he surmised, by shining a laser at the viewing monitor, that through this device one could actually manipulate the past!
10. After driving the bomb-laden Blazer into the river, saving the ferry and all of its passengers, Carlin was killed when the device exploded. Having witnessed the calamity, and mourning his death, Claire Kuchever eventually left the area with whom?

Answer: Doug Carlin

Yes, it was Doug. Even though "a" Doug died in the explosion, he wasn't the "original" Doug, at least in this timeline. The "original" Doug showed up after the explosion. Well, after all, it *is* a time-travel story!

Before the time-traveling Doug died, he made it clear to Claire that he knew what was going to happen before it did. After he was killed, and the original Doug appeared (one who had NOT traveled though time), it was Claire who knew what was going to happen. The movie left you with the realization that somehow, she'd have to explain it to Doug.
