As shown in the opening of the movie, the fiftieth anniversary is 1995. It is also the nation's oldest beauty pageant. To commemorate the event, a small documentary crew is sent to Mount Rose, Minnesota.

This fact is shown when the local pageant directors show the contestants the promotional tape. The tape is found to be taped over by an episode of "Days of our Lives".

The headquarters are told to be in Lincoln, Alabama in the end of the movie, and are told to be where the pageant is held in the beginning.
