Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the little lady played by Natalie Wood want for Christmas in "Miracle on 34th Street"?

Answer: A house

This 1947 movie deals with the effect that Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), who claims to be the real Santa Claus, has on Doris, a divorced mother who works at Macy's, Susan (Wood), her daughter, and many others he encounters. As a reaction to her divorce, Doris is raising her daughter not to believe in "fairy tales", including Santa Claus. Over the course of the film, Fred, an attorney, becomes interested in Doris. Kris is accused of being insane and is put on trial, and Fred quits his high-paying job in order to defend him. I won't spoil the wonderful denouement of the film, other than to say that Susan DOES get her Christmas present.

2. Martha May Whovier is so festive she wins the Christmas light decorating contest every year, thanks to an enamoured mayor Augustus Maywho. But Martha May has eyes for a holiday thief in which 2000 movie?

Answer: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Rich, beautiful and sexy, when Martha May Whovier (Christine Baranski) was a child she fell in love with the bearded, green boy called Grinch (Josh Ryan Evans). After the Grinch runs away from Whoville Martha May only cares about fancy dress, looking great and winning every annual Whoville Christmas light decorating contest, thanks to the cheating, adoring mayor Augustus Maywho (Jeffrey Tambor).

The grown up Grinch (Jim Carrey) returns, steals Christmas, and may steal Martha's heart as well. Ron Howard directed this 2000 blockbuster promoted as "The Grinch", an adaptation of the beloved 1957 Dr. Seuss story, "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas". -Godwit
3. In which film does Scott Calvin inadvertently cause the death of Santa Claus, and unwittingly end up having to replace the "lord" of secular Christmas?

Answer: The Santa Clause

Scott Calvin, played by Tim Allen, is a divorced man and neglectful parent to his son Charlie. After unintentionally causing Santa to fall off his roof, to his death, Scott is convinced by Charlie to put on the Santa suit and finish Santa's work for him. This makes him subject to "The Santa Clause", which means he must become Santa permanently.

Answer: Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks was born in 1956 in California, USA. He won his first Oscar in 1994 for his role in Philadelphia (1993).

Tom Hanks played six roles in the "Polar Express" (2004) including the conductor, Santa and the Hobo. "The Polar Express" (2004) was directed by Robert Zemeckis and was nominated for three Oscars and one Golden Globe. It used 3D motion capture techology throughout.

Answer: It's a Wonderful Life

"It's a Wonderful Life" was nominated for 5 Oscars at the 1947 Academy Awards, but did not win. It did win a Golden Globe, however, for best director (Frank Capra). This was also Donna Reed's first starring role.

6. Howard's son has asked for a Turbo Man action figure for Christmas, but all of the stores have sold out. So Howard sets out on a hilarious quest to track down this elusive toy. Name this comedy movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Answer: Jingle All the Way

"Jingle All the Way" (1996) was directed by Brian Levant and written by Randy Kornfield. The plot of the movie was based on the Christmas toy crazes and consequent sell out of toys such as The Cabbage Patch Dolls in the 1980s.
"Jingle All the Way 2" (2014) was a straight to DVD release that was considered a 'flop'.

7. Released in 1942, one of this film's songs by Irving Berlin would win the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Which of these films starred Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire performing at a Connecticut farmhouse?

Answer: Holiday Inn

During the film, musical numbers were created for each of the holidays celebrated at the Inn such as Lincoln's Birthday, Valentine's Day, Washington's Birthday, Easter, and so forth. The song "White Christmas" debuted on "The Kraft Music Hall" radio show in 1941 before it was added to the score of "Holiday Inn".

8. Kevin McCallister was an 8-year-old boy left alone by accident when his parents took a family vacation to Paris. In what movie is the little lord left to defend the manor?

Answer: Home Alone

The movie launched Macauley Culkin into superstardom and spawned several sequels. Culkin played Kevin, who was just about the only person left on the entire block as everyone went away for the holidays. He defended his house from a pair of burglars and was eventually reunited with his parents, siblings and extended family.

Culkin reprised the role for the first sequel, but for "Home Alone 3" in 1997 the entire cast changed. The fourth installment was released directly to television in 2002 and returned to the McCallister family, but with different actors. In 2012 "Home Alone: The Holiday Heist" was released as a made-for-TV movie and like the third installment didn't feature Kevin's family at all.

9. In "A Muppet Family Christmas" which festive female is busy at a photo shoot, her limo gets stuck in a blizzard, but she assures her "little green hunk" she'll be home for Christmas?

Answer: Miss Piggy

Miss Piggy is delightfully priggish and dear in the 1987 TV special "A Muppet Family Christmas". Directed by Peter Harris, Fozzie Bear invites all of Jim Henson's puppets to his mother Emily Bear's farm for a rockin' Christmas, but Miss Piggy is delayed by the demands of her fame, and a terrible blizzard.

The blizzard is so cold a snowman asks if he can come in and warm up! The "Sesame Street" Muppets show up as carolers, and a good time is had by all. All the answer options had green male cast mates. Happy Holidays! Godwit
10. "Die Hard" introduced us to Bruce Willis' rugged movie cop John McClane. In the movie he was a New York police officer who travelled to Los Angeles to visit his wife for Christmas. His wife didn't use her married name in the movie though, what was her name?

Answer: Holly Gennaro

Holly Gennaro was her maiden name. Holly and John were separated at the start of the movie. She and the children had moved to LA, while he remained a New York police detective. John took a flight to LA to visit her in time for the Nakatomi Corp. Christmas Party. During the party he found out she was using her maiden name instead of his last name.

She was played by Bonnie Bedelia in the 1988 movie and its 1990 sequel "Die Hard 2".

"Die Hard" and "Lethal Weapon" are two of my favorite non-traditional Christmas films.
