1. Edward Fox attempts to assassinate the president

Answer: The Day of the Jackal

The film, which came out in 1973, was based on the novel of the same title written by Frederick Forsyth. Fox played a hired assassin, known only as the Jackal, with his target being General Charles de Gaulle, the real life President of France. The true identity of the Jackal is never revealed - the prime suspect is exonerated, leaving the security services no wiser as to who he really was.
2. Marion Cotillard stars as an iconic French singer in this 2007 biopic

Answer: La Vie en Rose

"La Vie en Rose" was about the tragic life of Édith Piaf, the French singer who became enormously famous in the 1940s and 1950s. The film tells the story of her abandonment by her mother in her early childhood, being brought up in a brothel by her grandmother, the discovery of her musical talent, and her new life in America.

As a musical film, it also features performances of some of her best-known songs, including "Non, je ne regrette rien" and the titular "La Vie en Rose". Marion Cotillard's performance earned her a Best Actress Oscar at the 80th Academy Awards.
3. Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline start snogging in this 1995 romantic comedy

Answer: French Kiss

"French Kiss" was directed by Lawrence Kasdan who had already worked on "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Star Wars". The film starred Meg Ryan as Kate, a neurotic woman who travels to France to try and win back her fiance. Kevin Kline starred as Luc, a thief and diamond smuggler who meets Kate on route.

Answer: Sunday in the Park with George

The play, originally produced in 1984 by Stephen Sondheim, was taped in 1985 and later distributed on VHS and DVD. The story unfolds as George Seurat begins trying to paint "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grade Jatte" - an effort that would take more than two years.
5. Ewan McGregor plays Christian and Nicole Kidman is Satine

Answer: Moulin Rouge

The film was directed by Baz Luhrmann, who also acted a producer and co-author. Kidman played the star of the show at the cabaret, Moulin Rouge, while McGregor was the struggling poor author who falls for her, despite her being way out of his league. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, but won only two - for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Audrey Tautou plays the title character, Amélie, a young waitress who finds happiness in making other people happy. After successfully returning a box of childhood mementos to a man who used to live in her flat, she encourages her father to realise his dreams and go on a worldwide tour, acts as a matchmaker for two of her friends, and schemes to ensure that a local shopkeeper improves his treatment of his staff. Somewhere along the way she also manages to fall in love and find happiness for herself too. Filmed and set in Paris, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Owen Wilson starred as Gil Pender, an American screenwriter who holidays in Paris with his fiance. Dissatisfied with the way his writing is progressing, he somehow travels back in time where he meets Cole Porter, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. Back in the future, he splits with his fiance (Amy Adams) on discovering she was having an affair, and decides to move to Paris permanently.
9. Meryl Streep was known to say 'bon appetit' in this 2009 comedy drama

Answer: Julie and Julia

Meryl Streep starred as Julia Child, well known French chef and author of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". The chef also had a television programme in the 1960s and her well known catch phrase during the show was 'bon appetit'. Amy Adams starred as modern day food writer and blogger, Julie Powell, who decides to recreate all 524 recipes in the book over the period of a year. Stanley Tucci and Chris Messina starred as their husbands.
10. Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron sing and dance around the French capital

Answer: An American in Paris

This light-hearted offering came out in 1951, directed by Vincente Minnelli. The music was provided by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, with songs including "I Got Rhythm" and "Love is Here to Stay". The film included a ballet as its climax, with Kelly and Caron showing their paces over a period of nearly 20 minutes.
