Marlowe goes to the apartment of Joe Brady (Louis Jean Heydt) to get a compromising photograph of the General's youngest daughter. In the apartment he finds Brody, the General's eldest daughter, Vivian, and Agnes Lozelle. Later the General's youngest daughter turns up. After she leaves, Geiger's henchman, Carol Lundgren, knocks on the apartment door and shoots Brody when he opens it.

Vivian has $14,000 on the roulette table and wants to gamble it all but is refused until club owner Eddie Mars (John Ridgely) covers the bet, which she wins. It is all fixed to confuse Marlowe but he is not fooled and later foils a fake robbery involving Vivian Rutledge in the club car park.

Harry Jones (Elisha Cook Jr.) offers Philip Marlowe information on the whereabouts of club owner Eddie Mars' missing wife Mona for $200. He arranges to meet Marlowe in an office block later.

When Marlowe arrives, he hears talking and goes to an empty adjoining office to listen. During the conversation Harry Jones is given a poisoned drink and dies before Marlowe can get to him. He is given the poison by a killer named Lash Canino (Bob Steele), who escapes but is later shot dead by Marlowe.

Marlowe is on his way to find Mona Mars (Peggy Knudsen), the missing wife of club owner Eddie Mars. She is at a house behind the Art Huck Auto Repairs & Painting garage. Marlowe runs his car off the road and goes to the garage pretending he has a flat tyre. Inside he finds two men, Art Huck (Trevor Bardette) and Lash Canino, who killed small time crook Harry Jones.

Marlowe agrees to meet Mars at a house Mars owns but gets there before him with Vivian Rutledge, who hides in a back room. Although Marlowe has the drop on Mars he realizes that Mars has the house surrounded and he will be killed if he leaves first. Marlowe shoots Mars in both arms to make him leave first. When he gets outside he is killed by machine gun fire from his own henchmen.
