1. "Europa, Europa" was a wonderful movie based on some extraordinary real-life experiences by a young man. What is the backdrop for the movie?

Answer: World War II

This European export documents the true-life experiences of Solomon Perel, a Jew who was forced to run for his life and ended up being embraced by the Nazis (among others). Incredible story.
2. "Z" was a top thriller. Who was the star?

Answer: Yves Montand

Directed by Costa-Gavras, this was a tale of political intrigue and violence. Catchy music. "The Confession" was the next one by Costa-Gavras; it also dealt with political terror tactics.
3. "Indochine" was a pleasant (albeit lengthy) movie. Who was the star?

Answer: Catherine Deneuve

Deneuve - well after "Umbrellas of Cherbourg and "Belle Du Jour" - playing a mother of an adult girl. Nice drama, but a bit on the long side.
4. "Blow Up" was a symbolic effort of sorts that many liked. (I didn't.) Who was the director?

Answer: Antonioni

Michelangelo Antonioni. Existential problems for a crime witness. It didn't work for me, but others liked it.
5. "Juliet of the Spirits" was a strange movie. Who directed it?

Answer: Fellini

It is often difficult to understand what is going on, why things are happening, etc. (Fellini - that covers it.)
6. "The Last Tango in Paris" received a ton of publicity. Why? It was a thunderously boring movie. Who starred in it?

Answer: Marlon Brando

Directed by Bertolucci, with Maria Schneider. All the fuss about "pornography" - who cares? Stunningly dull.

Answer: Amarcord

That one was Fellini. The other three are perhaps the best known works of the Swedish master of the surreal.
8. Which movie was NOT made by Australian Peter Weir?

Morant was by Bruce Beresford, also an Australian. True story. The others by Weir have various levels of interest.

An Oscar for Sophia Loren. World War II drama.
10. "The Blue Angel" was an early European classic. Who starred?

Dietrich's best known work perhaps and the one that launched her to stardom.
