Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a school gym, two groups of teenagers of different ethnic backgrounds face off in a lively mambo dance

Answer: West Side Story

Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, a modern spin on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, "West Side Story" (1961) was directed by Robert Wise, and starred Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, George Chakiris, Rita Moreno and Russ Tamblyn. Jerome Robbins, who had directed the stage version of the musical, directed the song and dance scenes. During the "Dance at the Gym" sequence - in which the members of two rival youth gangs of New York's Upper West Side (the Puerto Rican Sharks and the white Jets) take part in a neighbourhood dance - the two main characters, Tony and Maria, meet and fall in love, in spite of the evident hostility between the two factions. "West Side Story" was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, and won 10 - a record for a musical film.
2. A man in a black suit and fedora hat sees the light during a spirited, gospel-infused sermon

Answer: The Blues Brothers

Directed by John Landis and starring the dynamic duo of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, "The Blues Brothers" (1980) follows the exploits of Jake and Elwood Blues in their "mission from God" to save the orphanage where they grew up. The titular band had been formed by Belushi and Aykroyd in 1978 as part of a musical sketch on the popular TV comedy show "Saturday Night Live", and included a number of well-known blues musicians, such as Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn of Booker T and the MG's. Besides the two main actors and the band members, the film features guest appearances by icons of soul, blues and R&B, such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and James Brown.

The latter plays the role of Reverend Cleophus James of the Triple Rock Baptist Church, where Jake has an epiphany that will lead him and Elwood to reform their old band in order to raise the money needed to pay the orphanage's hefty property tax bill.

In this exhilarating scene, Brown performs the gospel classic "The Old Landmark" accompanied by Rev. James Cleveland Choir.
3. Six young, naive backwoodsmen get into a fight with their rival suitors at a barn-raising in the Old West

Answer: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Robin Williams' little dance lesson in "The Birdcage" mentions Michael Kidd, the man behind "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"'s athletic choreography. Based on "The Sobbin' Women", a short story by Stephen Vincent Bénet that parodied the ancient Roman legend of the abduction of the Sabine women, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" (1954) was directed by Stanley Donen, with Howard Keel and Jane Powell in the lead roles.

The supporting cast included some professional dancers (such as Julie Newmar), and talented gymnast Russ Tamblyn.

The latter, who played the role of Gideon, the youngest of the titular seven brothers, put his training to great use in the stunning barn-raising scene, during which the brothers - in spite of the attempts by Milly, their oldest brother's wife, to teach them good manners - let themselves be goaded into a fight by the suitors of the girls that have attracted their interest, and end up demolishing the barn.
4. An expatriate artist tap-dances in the street while teaching English to a group of local children

Answer: An American in Paris

Inspired by George Gershwin's 1928 composition of the same name, "An American in Paris" (1951) is one of the most famous musical films of all time. Directed by Vincente Minnelli and featuring music by Gershwin (with lyrics by his brother Ira), it stars Gene Kelly as WWII veteran Jerry Mulligan, who is trying to build a reputation as a painter in the French capital, and Leslie Caron as Lise Bouvier, the French girl with whom he falls in love. "I Got Rhythm", the song Kelly sings to celebrate his new life while entertaining a group of Parisian children, was originally from the musical "Girl Crazy", also by the Gershwin brothers.
5. A sharply-dressed, drug-fuelled couple tear it up on the dance floor at a twist contest

Answer: Pulp Fiction

Unlike the other films featured in this quiz, "Pulp Fiction" (1994) is not a musical. However, the scene in which contract killer Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman), his boss's wife, participate in a twist contest held in a '50s-themed restaurant has often been voted as one of the great dance scenes in film. Directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring - besides Travolta and Thurman - Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and Harvey Keitel, this ultra-violent yet stylish black comedy won the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival in 1994, as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and it has since earned the status of a modern classic.

The twist scene was inspired by the Madison dance in Jean-Luc Godard's 1964 film "Bande à part" (Band of Outsiders).
6. Red scarves replace blood in this spectacularly choreographed scene, in which six women narrate what drove them to murder

Answer: Chicago

The film version of the 1975 musical "Chicago" (with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb), directed by Rob Marshall and starring Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere, was released in 2002, and won six Academy Awards the following year.

The film's choreography pays homage to Bob Fosse's distinctive jazz style, which characterized the musical's original Broadway production. Constructed as a sort of dream sequence, "Cell Block Tango (He Had It Comin')" - filmed in shades of black, grey and red - takes place in Cook County Jail, where housewife Roxie Hart (Zellweger) has been taken after murdering her lover. One of the six prisoners who tell their stories is Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress), a showgirl who murdered her husband and her sister after finding them in bed together.
7. A merry band of chimney sweeps engage in a rousing dance on the rooftops of London

Answer: Mary Poppins

Loosely based on P.L. Travers' series of children's books about a magical nanny, "Mary Poppins" (1964) was one of the first films to combine live action with animation. Directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney, with music by the Sherman Brothers, the film stars Julie Andrews in the title role and Dick Van Dyke as her friend Bert, a Cockney jack-of-all-trades. Van Dyke (whose attempt at a Cockney accent has often been ridiculed) and his fellow chimney sweeps perform the energetic song and dance scene "Step in Time", joined by Andrews and her two charges, Jane and Michael Banks. "Mary Poppins" was nominated for a staggering 13 Academy Awards, and won five - including Best Actress (Andrews) and Best Original Score.
8. A young woman and a heavily made-up man extol the virtues of hard cash on the stage of a seedy Berlin nightclub

Answer: Cabaret

Directed by Bob Fosse, "Cabaret" (1972) brought international fame to its star, Liza Minnelli, the daughter of director Vincente Minnelli and actress/singer Judy Garland. Set in Berlin on the eve of the rise of the Nazi Party, the film - based on the eponymous Broadway musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb (the authors of "Chicago") - tells the story of American showgirl Sally Bowles (Minnelli) and her relationship with PhD student Brian Roberts (Michael York).

The famous "Money" scene is a duet between Minnelli and Joel Grey, who plays the role of the Kit Kat Club's Master of Ceremonies - a character who acts as a storyteller detached from the main plot; the song was one of three new songs written by Kander and Ebb expressly for the film. "Cabaret" won eight Academy Awards, including Best Director (Fosse), Best Actress (Minnelli) and Best Supporting Actor (Grey) - though it missed the one for Best Picture.
9. Though locked behind bars, a group of young men jump around, celebrating their crowning glories

Answer: Hair

Milos Forman's 1979 adaptation of iconic Broadway musical "Hair" (music by Galt Mc Dermot and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado) substantially diverged from the original version, both in plot and soundtrack. Starring John Savage as naive country boy Claude Bukowski, and Treat Williams as hippie leader George Berger, the film is set during the Vietnam era.

The musical's title song, "Hair", is sung by Woof, one of the hippies (played by rock musician Donnie Dacus), when, after having been arrested for disrupting a party, he refuses to have his hair cut. "Hair"'s energetic dance scenes were choreographed by Twyla Tharp (another dance icon mentioned in Robin Williams' lesson), who also collaborated on Forman's "Ragtime" and "Amadeus".
10. A beautiful young woman in a seductive pink dress flirts with a bevy of men who vie for her attentions with expensive gifts

Answer: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

The famous sequence of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) in which Marilyn Monroe sings "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", has been referenced or imitated various times - Madonna's "Material Girl" video probably being the best-known example. The film was adapted from the stage musical based on Anita Loos' 1925 novel of the same title. Directed by Howard Hawks, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" stars Marilyn and stunning brunette Jane Russell as Lorelei and Dorothy, two showgirls from Little Rock, Arkansas, who board a ship bound for France.

In the iconic scene, Lorelei (who has a weakness for diamonds) explains the cynical though realistic reasons why girls should pursue rich husbands.
