Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One sign of Gothel's true age was to be found in her dress. Which of these best describes it?

Answer: Renaissance-era crimson dress with gold trim

The youthful Mother Gothel also had large grey eyes, unblemished skin and dark curly hair. Visually, she was distinct from Rapunzel who wore the described pink-purple dirndl and had golden blonde hair and bright green eyes. The makers of 'Tangled' wanted Gothel's dress to have an older style than most things in the film, so as to remind people of her immense age. Donna Murphy - who played Gothel - and singer Cher were also cited as inspirations for Gothel's overall appearance.

The bat-like dress was a nod to Maleficent's attire from 'Sleeping Beauty', and the Queen of Hearts from 'Alice in Wonderland' wore the billowy red and black gown.
2. Gothel initially abducted Rapunzel to win a massive ransom from her royal parents.

Answer: False

For hundreds of years, Mother Gothel had secretly been using a magical flower to retain her youth and beauty. When the kingdom of Corona's queen fell deathly ill, this flower was found and pulled from the ground to be used in a healing broth. These powers were then transferred into her daughter Rapunzel.

Unfortunately, the healing powers faded when Rapunzel's hair was cut, so Gothel ultimately abducted Rapunzel out of a desperate will to survive.
3. Gothel began to lose control of Rapunzel when she wanted to leave the tower to fulfil a dream of seeing the beautiful floating lights in person. What were the floating lights really?

Answer: Lanterns

One of the big 'Tangled' hits was 'I See the Light', where Rapunzel really did get to see the lights in person with love interest Flynn Rider on her 18th birthday. The song signified Rapunzel's maturing and coming-of-age as well as the growing romantic attraction between her and Flynn. These floating lanterns were a memorial from the king and queen who were missing their beloved daughter.

As in the Grimms' tales, Rapunzel would let Gothel back into the tower by dropping down her long hair. However, Rapunzel was never allowed to leave the tower herself. Gothel could not risk her reuniting with her parents, finding out the truth about her abduction or in discovering why she really valued Rapunzel.
4. One song encapsulated Gothel's attempts to manipulate Rapunzel into staying in the tower. In it, Gothel mocked Rapunzel's appearance and immaturity whilst telling of imaginary worldly dangers of things like cannibals and snakes. What was its name?

Answer: Mother Knows Best

Throughout the song, Mother Gothel stroked and crooned over Rapunzel's hair, showing where her real priorities lay. Gothel even said that she was 'as fragile as a flower' at the beginning of the song, a nod to her source of immortality. Gothel belittled Rapunzel and struck fear into her to as to keep her isolated and under her thumb. By the end of the song, Gothel implored Rapunzel to never ask to leave the tower again, a request she reluctantly abided by. For a little while, at least.

'Poor Unfortunate Souls' was sung by Ursula in 'The Little Mermaid'; 'Be Prepared' was from Scar in 'The Lion King; and the titularly sung 'Cruella De Vil' was from '101 Dalmatians'.
5. Rapunzel was soon emboldened to ask Gothel to leave the tower once again, having grown in confidence after smacking a thief unconscious with which kitchen implement?

Answer: Frying pan

Flynn Rider was an 'on the run thief' who was a wanted criminal. After seeking to hide in the tower, he met his match in Rapunzel who knocked him out cold with her frying pan. The frying pan became a bit of a running joke in the movie, with Flynn legitimately using it as a weapon on several occasions. The kingdom's army eventually adopted the pan as a national weapon themselves.

Before Rapunzel could tell Gothel about her captured intruder, she was silenced and abruptly told she would never leave the tower after yet another plea to that end. She softened when Rapunzel encouraged her to buy some white seashell paint for her birthday gift, a task which would take Gothel three days to complete.
6. After Rapunzel finally departed the tower, Gothel became more overtly devious. Which unscrupulous character(s) did she do a deal with outside of the tavern's hidden tunnel to try to get Rapunzel back under her control?

Answer: Stabbington Brothers

The Stabbington Brothers were thugs in search of Flynn Rider, the thief who Gothel knew had something to do with her disappearance from the tower. Gothel told them that they could get their revenge on Flynn and could also get an even greater treasure still via Rapunzel's magical hair. Ultimately, she betrayed them once they had planned on abducting Rapunzel for their own purposes.

They had some legitimate grievances: Flynn Rider had engaged in a heist with them and taken the spoils for himself.
7. Rapunzel had developed feelings for Flynn, but Gothel was able to sow seeds of doubt as to his true intentions after giving her which stolen item?

Answer: The royal crown

Rapunzel initially left the tower with Flynn Rider so as to see the 'floating lights' in person for her birthday. She would then give him back his satchel, which she obtained after knocking him out with the frying pan, and he would take her home. Gothel popped up one evening when Flynn was getting firewood; she thrust the crown into Rapunzel's hands during the reprise of 'Mother Knows Best' and told her she was naïve to think he wanted anything other than that crown. Flynn hadn't realised it had fallen out of the satchel when Rapunzel struck him with the pan.

The glass slipper was a nod to 'Cinderella', the emerald stone referred to the Heart of Te Fiti in 'Moana', and the poisoned apple was from 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'.
8. Once Rapunzel realised she was the lost princess, she became actively defiant against Gothel. Which of these was *NOT* something Gothel did in response?

Answer: Drugged Rapunzel to sleep

Gothel had made it seem as though Flynn had left with the royal crown on a ship, but he had really been tied to the mast and sentenced to an execution. Gothel's aim was to have fully broken Rapunzel's optimism and her 'sunshine' and they both returned to the tower.

Rapunzel connected the dots after seeing the crown emblems on her drawings. She was reminded of the royal tiara being presented to her as a child, and she became very angry with Gothel who had manipulated her for her own ends. Gothel feebly protested, but knew the game was up: she ultimately knew she couldn't play nice any more. Rapunzel was quite awake for the film's concluding scenes, although the other brutal things did happen.
9. After the final encounter with Rapunzel and Flynn, Mother Gothel finally met her end. What was her most probable cause of death?

Answer: Old age

Very few Disney characters get the luxury of being able to die of old age, though Gothel's death was hardly peaceful or dignified. Rapunzel promised to submit to Gothel if she could heal the dying Flynn Rider of his wounds, and Gothel agreed knowing that Rapunzel would never break a promise. Before she could start the healing incantation, Flynn cut Rapunzel's hair with a shard of glass as he wanted to set her free. Gothel started ageing rapidly and was struck with a hysteric panic.

The mascot character Pascal pulled Rapunzel's hair taut and Gothel tripped over it, falling out of the tower.

By the time she hit the floor, all that was left was dust.
10. Flynn Rider also ultimately died after the final encounter with Mother Gothel.

Answer: False

In a melodramatic and sentimental scene, Rapunzel mourned over Flynn Rider's body. She began singing the healing incantation, crying over what she believed to be his dead body. Her tears still held magical power, however, and he was magically revived.

They embraced, proclaimed their love for one another and went to meet the king and queen of Corona who also embraced the both of them. After many proposals from Rapunzel, Flynn finally became her husband in marriage, and in the classical Disney way they all lived happily ever after, the end.
