Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Little girl seems to be comin' along." "Yeah. It's almost like someone's been helping her." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Million Dollar Baby

In the events leading up to this scene, boxing trainer Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) is asked by poor waitress Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) to train her in boxing, but Frankie declines, saying he doesn't train girls. However, Maggie persists and buys a six-month membership in Frankie's Hit Pit gym. One evening Frankie's employee (and former boxer) Eddie "Scrap-Iron" Dupris (Morgan Freeman) is watching her practice and gives her a few basic tips, unbeknownst to Frankie.

In this scene, Eddie and Frankie are watching her train and Eddie says line one. Frankie, still unaware that Eddie has given her some tips, replies with line two.

In the 2005 Academy Awards "Million Dollar Baby" won four Oscars, including Best Picture. Hilary Swank won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Morgan Freeman won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Hilary Swank gained nearly 20 pounds of muscle due to the workouts she underwent in preparing for this film.
2. "Oh, I got high marks in courtesy and, uh, hygiene." "Perfect. You wanted to be a nun." (Hint: Richard Gere is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Chicago

This movie is both very entertaining and an interesting commentary on the Chicago brand of justice in the 1920s. Hotshot defense lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) compares it to entertainment (one of the movie's taglines is "With the right song and dance, you can get away with murder").

In the events leading up to this scene, Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) is a wannabe vaudeville star who kills her lover after finding out he had lied to her and was never going to make her famous. In this scene, Flynn and Hart are discussing her defense strategy, and Flynn observes, "one thing they can't resist and that's a reformed sinner." He asks her about what subjects she did good in at school and she replies with line one.

He envisions a defense of a good girl being led astray by liquor and jazz and says line two.

In the 2003 Academy Awards "Chicago" won six Oscars, including Best Picture and Catherine Zeta-Jones for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Renée Zellweger, Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly and director Rob Marshall were also nominated for awards but didn't win. "Chicago" was the fourth movie where Richard Gere wound up with a role that John Travolta had turned down.

The other three were "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982), "American Gigolo" (1980), and "Days of Heaven" (1978).
3. "Get yourself a girl so you can settle down." "I settle down almost every night, but then in the morning I'm free. I love you, ma. I wanna be with you." (Hint: Joe Pesci is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Goodfellas

Although the characters in "Goodfellas" are fictionalized, the story is based on actual incidents and people, as described in the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi. The movie was renamed to avoid confusion with an American TV series that was on at that time.

In the events leading up to this scene, mobsters Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro), Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) and Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) are about to bury a body (in their car trunk) and have stopped at the house of Tommy's mother (Catherine Scorsese) to get a shovel.

In this scene, they are all sitting at the table eating and Tommy's mother is urging him to find a nice girl and get married. She says the first line and Tommy replies with the second. The real Henry Hill entered the Witness Protection Program and was relocated (although he was kicked out after the movie came out and he told many people of his true identity).

In the 1991 Academy Awards, Joe Pesci won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. "Goodfellas" was also nominated, but did not win, in five more categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "Dances with Wolves").

The actress who played Tommy's mother (this scene) is the real life mother of director Martin Scorsese. The part of singer Bobby Vinton was played by Vinton's son Robbie.
4. "A merry Christmas to us all, my dears. God bless us!" "God bless us every one!" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: A Christmas Carol

This wonderful holiday movie is based on a classic short story by English author Charles Dickens. A miserly old man, who considers Christmas humbug, is taught the true meaning and spirit of the season by three ghosts who show him his own past and present and what the future holds for him if he doesn't change his ways.

There have been numerous versions of this movie made over the years. My favorite (of the ones I've seen) is the 1984 version with George C. Scott playing Ebenezer Scrooge. In this scene Bob Cratchit (David Warner) is raising his glass in a toast to his family at their Christmas table and says line one.

His son Tiny Tim (Anthony Walters) adds line two. Charles Dickens has written many books that have been turned into movies, including "Great Expectations," "A Tale of Two Cities," "David Copperfield" and "Oliver Twist."
5. "Sandy, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard." "I know, I'm such a loser." (Hint: Ben Stiller is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Along Came Polly

This movie tells one of those "opposites attract" stories. Uptight, stiff, risk analyst Reuben Feffer (Ben Stiller) meets free spirited, spontaneous Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston) while on the rebound from a disastrous marriage. They begin dating and Reuben's world is turned upside down. Reuben has Irritable Bowel Syndrome but reports to his friend Sandy Lyle (Philip Seymour Hoffman) that "Polly's been making me eat ethnic food and I've been throwing up a lot lately." In this scene, wannabe acting star Sandy confesses that the film crew following him around is not from "E! True Hollywood Story" (like he originally said), but one he has hired himself in hopes of selling the film to "E!" Astonished Reuben says line one and Sandy sadly acknowledges his comment with line two.

The scenes of Polly's pet blind ferret running into things were done with an animatronics robot made up to look like a ferret.
6. "No. I was in a bar havin' a drink with my future wife." "You missed Pudge Fisk's home run?" (Hint: Matt Damon is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Good Will Hunting

In the events leading up to this scene, MIT janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is found to have some amazing talents in mathematics. The award-winning math professor who discovers Will sees he also has some serious personal issues and enlists the aid of therapist and friend Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), who starts having discussions with Will.

In this scene Sean is talking about the importance of caring about someone and starts explaining how his wife (now dead) is still very important to him. Will asks, "So, when did you know, like, that she was the one for you?" Sean explains with line one it was on the day of game six of the 1975 World (baseball) Series when he gave up tickets for the game to meet the girl who would become his wife (and thus missed a dramatic twelfth inning home run by Boston Red Sox slugger Carlton "Pudge" Fisk that broke a tie).

Incredulous Will replies with line two. In the 1998 Academy Awards "Good Will Hunting" won two Oscars, Robin Williams for Best Supporting Actor and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (they both also acted in this movie). "Good Will Hunting" was also nominated in seven other categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "Titanic").

This is the second movie where Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and the Boston Red Sox (all three together) have a connection with a movie. In the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams," in the scene shot in Boston's Fenway Park, the thousands of extras in the stands include then unknowns Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
7. "The precogs are never wrong. But sometimes...they do disagree." "What?" (Hint: Tom Cruise is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Minority Report

This movie is set in the year 2054 and tells the thought-provoking story of a precrime unit, which uses precogs to alert police (three children floating in a milky photon bath that are able to see future crimes). In the events leading up to this scene, unit chief John Anderton (Tom Cruise) learns the precogs have predicted he will commit a murder in the next 36 hours and he believes this is a setup.

In an effort to learn more about how the system operates, he visits the system originator, retired scientist Dr. Iris Hineman (Lois Smith).

In this scene Dr. Hineman says line one and a surprised Anderton replies with line two. She adds the advice to "find the minority report" for the precrime he supposedly will commit. In the 2003 Academy Awards "Minority Report" was nominated for one Oscar but didn't win.

The three precogs in the room called "the temple" were named after famous mystery writers Dashiell Hammett, Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie.
8. "Do you find it difficult to do your duty?" "Sometimes I do what I want to do. The rest of the time, I do what I have to." (Hint: Russell Crowe and Richard Harris are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Gladiator

In the events leading up to this scene, aging Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) chooses popular and loyal Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) to be his heir over his own power hungry son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), so that rule might pass from the Caesars back to the people and the Roman Senate.

In this scene, after a decisive victory over Germanic barbarians, Maximus is discussing the meaning of the word "duty" with Cicero (Tommy Flanagan) and says the first line. Cicero replies with the second.

When Marcus Aurelius is murdered by Commodus in a fit of rage, a power struggle ensues and in a cruel twist of fate Maximus is taken into slavery and trained as a gladiator. In the 2001 Academy Awards "Gladiator" won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Russell Crowe for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (but lost to Benicio Del Toro in "Traffic").

Historical note: The real-life Commodus did in fact fight as a gladiator in the arena (and was the only Roman Emperor in history to do so).

However, he was not killed in the arena (as was shown in the movie) but was strangled in his bath by the wrestler Narcissus.
9. "I thought I made it perfectly clear. If everything else falls apart...maybe." "I'm gonna hold you to that." (Hint: Cameron Diaz is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: There's Something About Mary

In this scene high school geek Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) awkwardly asks classmate Renise to the prom but she says, "Look, I heard this rumor that this guy is gonna ask me." When Ted appears confused by her answer, she adds line one. Desperate Ted replies with line two.

Then he meets new student Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz) and is smitten big time. Many years later he still thinks of Mary and hires private investigator Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to track down adult Mary. However, Pat falls for her too and falsifies his report back to Ted. Ted grows suspicious of his report and goes to investigate for himself.

This movie won several awards but no Oscars. A then-unknown Owen Wilson was considered for the part of Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller's part) but the studio was reluctant to cast an unknown in a lead role. Ben Stiller is the son of legendary comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara.
10. "I love you. You... you complete me. And I just... " "Shut up, just shut up. You had me at hello." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Jerry Maguire

In the events leading up to this scene, sports agent Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) becomes disillusioned with the money-first philosophy he sees while working for Sports Management International (SMI). He writes a manifesto of personal ethics and then leaves SMI, along with secretary Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), to found his own sports management company.

Initially he has only one client, egomaniacal football player Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Jerry marries Dorothy, but he doesn't seem very enthusiastic about it.

In this scene Jerry has realized he really does love Dorothy a lot and he goes to her house while her sister's divorced women's group is meeting. When he sees Dorothy he starts to say line one but she cuts him off with line two.

In the 1998 Academy Awards Cuba Gooding Jr. won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Tom Cruise was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role but did not win. "Jerry Maguire" was also nominated for Best Picture (but lost to "The English Patient").

This was the movie that turned Renée Zellweger into a big star. She has said that the day she was cast in "Jerry Maguire" it had been so long since she had worked that she did not have enough of a bank balance to make an ATM withdrawal. Some of the other actresses considered for the role of Dorothy Boyd (Renée's part) included Cameron Diaz, Bridget Fonda, Courtney Love, Parker Posey, Winona Ryder and Marisa Tomei.
