Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "When I was growing up, I knew I was different. The other girls were blonde and delicate, and I was a swarthy six-year-old with sideburns." -- 2002

Answer: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Young Greek-American woman Toula Portokalos (played by Nia Vardalos) speaks this line to the audience describing her life. Her parents want her to marry a Greek boy and have Greek babies, but she falls in love with a non-Greek. They learn to adjust to each other's culture and plan a wedding. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen in the 2003 Academy Awards but lost to Pedro Almodóvar for "Hable con ella".
2. "He'll feel a lot better after he's robbed a couple of banks." -- 1969

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

After Butch (Paul Newman), Sundance (Robert Redford), and Etta Place (Katharine Ross) leave America and travel to Bolivia, their train drops them off at a rural, undeveloped spot. They are dismayed at how it looks, and Butch says, "Jeesh, all Bolivia can't look like this." Sundance (in a foul mood) replies, "How do you know? This might be the garden spot of the whole country. People may travel hundreds of miles just to get to this spot where we're standing now." Then he adds (to Butch) "Listen, you're job is to back me up, because you'd starve without me. And you (to Etta), your job is to shut up." Butch then says this quote to Etta.
3. "I put a curse on that plane." -- 1987 (Hint: This is said by an old lady to Cher.)

Answer: Moonstruck

Loretta Castorini (played by Cher) is at the airport to say goodbye to her fiancée Johnny Cammareri (played by Danny Aiello), who is going to Palermo, Sicily to see his dying mother. While watching his plane taxi to takeoff, she starts talking to an old woman who is also watching the plane.

The old woman is bitter at her sister, who is on the plane, for stealing a boyfriend from her fifty years earlier ("Today she told me that she didn't even love him. She took him to be strong on me.") She has cursed the plane so "that the green Atlantic water should swallow her up!"
4. "Take her to the zoo. I hear retards like the zoo." -- 1976 (Hint: Sylvester Stallone is in this movie.)

Answer: Rocky

Rocky (played by Sylvester Stallone) has a first date with meek pet store shop girl, Adrian (played by Talia Shire) and is discussing with his loan shark employer where to go on their date. The loan shark's driver/bodyguard (played by Joe Sorbello) says this quote to provoke Rocky. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script for "Rocky" in three days after he saw a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and an unknown Chuck Wepner in which Wepner went the distance.
5. "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?" -- 1983 (Hint: A computer says this.)

Answer: War Games

Matthew Broderick plays a high school computer cracker who accidentally triggers the start of a thermonuclear war when he mistakenly thinks he is breaking into a game company database via the internet but has actually broken into NORAD (the U.S. and Canada's North American Aerospace Defense Command system).

He finally teaches NORAD's computer (who speaks this line) that thermonuclear war is like the game tic-tac-toe, i.e., the only winning move is not to play. A wonderful computer thriller that has withstood the test of time despite the many changes in computer technology. "War Games" was nominated for three Oscars in the 1984 Academy Awards but didn't win any. "Terms of Endearment" won the Best Picture award that year.
6. "You are the reason I am. You are all my reasons." -- 2001

Answer: A Beautiful Mind

Schizophrenic mathematician John Nash spoke this line to his wife Alicia, who is in the audience at the Nobel Prize awards ceremony. Jennifer Connelly won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Alicia. "A Beautiful Mind" won four Oscars in the 2002 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Russell Crowe was nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of mathematician John Nash but lost out to Denzel Washington in "Training Day". Ron Howard won an Oscar for Best Director.
7. "What knockers!" -- 1974 (Hint: Gene Wilder is in this movie.)

Answer: Young Frankenstein

Doctor Frankenstein (played by Gene Wilder) is holding his well-endowed young lab assistant (played by Terri Garr), who is wearing a low-cut dress. When he comments on some over-size door knockers on the castle doors, she says "Oh, thank you doctor." Another classic Mel Brooks' line.
8. "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." -- 1970 (Hint: This quote is said by Japanese Admiral Yamamoto.)

Answer: Tora! Tora! Tora!

Japanese Admiral Yamamoto says this to his junior officers on a carrier warship after they are celebrating Japan's attack on the U.S. base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He has studied in the U.S., appreciates its vast manufacturing ability, and has doubts Japan can succeed in its war ambitions.

When Japanese characters in "Tora! Tora! Tora!" refer to the date of the attack in Japanese, they are actually saying "December 8," which is technically correct in Japan since it is a day ahead of the U.S.

However, it is translated as "December 7" in the subtitles to avoid confusing U.S. audiences.
9. "Two mice fell into a bowl of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse fought and struggled until he churned that cream into butter and he crawled his way out. I am that second mouse." -- 2002 (Hint: Leonardo DiCaprio is in this movie.)

Answer: Catch Me If You Can

The father of con artist Frank W. Abagnale, Jr. speaks this quote in his speech to the New Rochelle, NY Rotary Club as an analogy to show how he never gives up. Christopher Walken was nominated for an Oscar in the 2003 Academy Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for playing the father, but didn't win. Leonardo DiCaprio played con artist Frank W. Abagnale, Jr. and Tom Hanks played an FBI agent in hot pursuit. Based on a true story.
10. "If you build it, he will come." -- 1989

Answer: Field of Dreams

Iowa corn farmer Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) hears a voice in his cornfield speaking this quote to him (but never sees the speaker). He interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, and the ghosts of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the seven other Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series (known as the Chicago *Black* Sox) appear.

In the movie's heartfelt conclusion, Ray's dead father John Kinsella also appears on the ball field. Adapted from the novel by W.P. Kinsella. "Field of Dreams" was nominated for Best Picture in the 1990 Academy Awards but lost to "Driving Miss Daisy".
