Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a complicated character who brings an element of comedy to the film. Towards the beginning of the film we see him show up late for a test flight, with some new computer controlled jets. What type of jet does Hal fly and crash in this test?

Answer: F-35

Hal and his wingperson, Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), fly F-35 fighter jets in the test flight. Hal carries out some controversial actions, including using Carol, as a decoy to distract the opponent jets. After luring the opponent jets to their maximum altitude, making them stall and fall, he manages to get a lock on and take them out but his methods displease the majority of his superiors.

The F-35 (Lockheed Martin) fighter jet is a single seated aircraft with a top speed of 1,500mph! It was developed in the USA and can be used in many combat situations.
2. A Green Lantern crashes to Earth after being gravely wounded by Parallax. His power ring chooses Hal as being worthy to replace him. What is the name of this Green Lantern?

Answer: Abin Sur

Abin Sur was a humanoid created from the planet Ungara who died on Earth after an encounter with Parallax. He was chosen as a Green Lantern to protect space sector 2814. He had pinkish-purple skin and purple blood, which was noticed by Hal after he helped him out of the space ship wreckage. Abin Sur was a much trusted and respected Green Lantern and therefore his fellow Lanterns did not take kindly to a human (seen as an immature race of beings) replacing him.
3. Complete Hal's Green Lantern oath: 'In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's _______!'

Answer: light

This is the oath Hal must speak to activate the power ring and pledge allegiance to the Green Lanterns. He speaks it whilst alone in his home on the sofa after being told to do so by the late Abin Sur. At first he is unsure of what to say at all and tries many comical phrases such as 'to infinity and beyond' from the 'Toy Story' movies.

But when he brushes the power ring against the Lantern a green light is emitted and it's as if he suddenly knows what he must say. In the comic books it is said that each Lantern must speak their own individual oath, which isn't made clear in the film.
4. After getting into a spot of trouble outside a bar with three men, Hal is unwillingly transported to the planet where the Green Lantern Corps is situated. What is the name of this planet?

Answer: Oa

Oa is a fictional planet central to the DC comic book universe. The citadel of the Guardians of the Universe is located on Oa as well as the Green Lantern Corps. The Guardians of the Universe guide and give council to the Green Lanterns, who protect it.

They play a key role in the film as the enemy, Parallax, was formerly a Guardian of the Universe. In the film special effects have been used to give Oa an eerie feel to it with most objects sporting a green tinge.
5. After learning some basic information about battling as a Green Lantern from Kilowog, Hal comes face to face with Sinestro. Sinestro is not keen on Hal because he is human and he doesn't think him worthy of the ring that chose him. Sinestro implies they should fight. What is the first weapon Hal wills against Sinestro?

Answer: Sword

Hal uses the power of will to create a green sword. Sinestro mocks this choice of weapon calling it 'very human'. A battle between the two commences though it has to be said the fighting is a little lame on Hal's part. And sure enough Sinestro makes Hal feel so unworthy and useless as a Lantern that he quits and returns to Earth.
6. Senator Hammond's helicopter is crashing and Hal must do something to save him. He uses a motorcycle and track to bring the Senator to the ground safely.

Answer: False

Hal creates a racetrack and race car to bring the Senator down safely. He cleverly encases the helicopter in the race car and wills a racetrack with many twists and turns to roll him to the ground. At the same time as this he has to will up a shield to protect Carol from falling debris.

Despite the complexity of the task Hal manages to harness the power of will effectively and saves both Carol and Senator Hammond.
7. What does Hal give as a late birthday present to Carol?

Answer: Necklace

Carol recognises Hal even behind his Green Lantern mask. The two talk about Green Lantern life and this is when Hal creates a sparkling green necklace around Carol's neck. She seems to appreciate the gift but it doesn't swerve her off the topic of serious conversation.
8. Hector Hammond is the son of Senator Hammond. It's fair to say his and his dad's relationship with one another isn't very good. Hector is chosen to examine the body of Abin Sur early on in the movie. Whilst examining he comes into contact with a power that consumes him as it did Parallax. What is this power?

Answer: Fear

The power of fear is the opposite of what the Green Lanterns use (the power of will). It has long been thought by the Lanterns that will is the stronger power source, but after Sinestro and the Guardians of the Universe witness Parallax's growing power they decide they must forge a ring of fear. Hal turns up and tells them he thinks it's a bad idea and that will can be stronger than fear. Shortly after this he finds himself alone in the battle to save planet Earth.
9. How does Hal eventually overcome Parallax?

Answer: He takes him close to the sun, burning him.

Hal remembers something one of the Green Lanterns said to him. Bigger things burn quicker than smaller ones. So he takes Parallax to the sun, which is very brave because it also causes damage to him. The plan works and because Parallax is so large the sun burns him up quicker than Hal, who manages to survive and is saved from falling into the sun completely by Sinestro, Kilowog and Tomar-Re.
10. Who directed this fantastic movie?

Answer: Martin Campbell

Martin Campbell is a TV and film director from New Zealand. He has directed loads of successful movies, including: 'GoldenEye', 'The Legend of Zorro', 'Casino Royale' and 'Edge of Darkness'.
