Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Everett convinced Pete and Delmar to escape the chain gang with him by offering to share the $1.2 million he had buried, in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000). Did the three of them recover Everett's loot?

Answer: no

There never was any money. Everett wanted to win back his ex-wife, Penny, because she was getting ready to remarry. He had to get Delmar and Pete to go with him because they were chained together, so he lied to them about buried loot that had to be gotten before the area was flooded. Even the blind seer told them they wouldn't find the treasure that they sought. George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro played Everett, Delmar and Pete in the Coen Brothers' comedy set in the 1930s.
2. This 2005 film, starring Paul Walker and Jessica Alba as divers who found a sunken ship, had the tagline, "Treasure has its price". Which movie was it?

Answer: Into the Blue

Walker and Alba played a couple named Jared and Sam who lived in the Bahamas. After finding the wreckage of a pirate ship which supposedly contained gold, Jared, Sam and another couple also found the wreckage of a drug smuggling plane nearby. Fearing that reporting the plane would draw attention to the ship wreckage, they wanted to stake their claim on the ship before reporting the plane. Jared's friend thought that selling the drugs from the plane would provide the money they needed for equipment to raise the gold, but he ended up getting the attention of the local drug dealers instead. Scott Caan and Josh Brolin also starred in the movie.

Other taglines for "Into the Blue" were "Temptation is bliss" and "Hold your breath".
3. In "The Goonies", what was the name of One-Eyed Willie's pirate ship which held the treasure that Mikey and his friends were looking for?

Answer: The Inferno

With their parents facing imminent foreclosure by a greedy developer, Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin) convinced his friends to go in search of the buried treasure indicated by a map found in his attic. Their search eventually led them to Willie's ship, The Inferno, which had been trapped in a cave by the British. Though it seemed like the kids had escaped the cave, and the Fratellis, empty-handed, it turned out that Mikey had stashed some jewels in his marble bag, allowing their houses to be saved. Also in "The Goonies" (1985) was Josh Brolin, Jonathan Ke Quan, Corey Feldman and Jeff Cohen.
4. Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) was searching the wreckage of the RMS Titanic for a necklace with a blue heart-shaped diamond called "Heart of the Ocean". In "Titanic" (1997), did Lovett ever gain possession of the necklace?

Answer: No

Brock did find a drawing of a woman wearing the necklace, which was shown on television. An elderly woman named Rose saw the drawing and realized it was the picture a young man had drawn of her on the ship. After contacting Brock, she was taken to his ship, where she told everyone the story of the voyage.

At the end of the movie, Rose walked to the back of the ship, opened her hand which held the necklace she had kept all those years, and let it drop into the water. Rose was played by Gloria Stuart as an elderly woman, and by Kate Winslet as a young woman.
5. "Candleshoe" (1977) was about a streetwise, teenaged orphan, Casey, who was recruited as part of a scam. The plan was for Casey to pose as the long-lost grandchild of a British woman in order to find the treasure left by the woman's pirate husband. Which future Oscar winner played Casey in this Walt Disney movie?

Answer: Jodie Foster

Not wanting Lady St. Edmund to know that she was broke, her butler, Mr. Priory, pretended to be several different servants at the house. He, along with the orphans the kind-hearted woman had living with her, performed all the chores and managed to bring some money in. Unaffected at first, Casey eventually began to feel like she finally belonged somewhere, and decided to find the treasure for Lady St. Edmund.

Helen Hayes played Lady St. Edmund and David Niven played Mr. Priory. Jodie won Best Actress Oscars for "The Accused" and "The Silence of the Lambs".
6. Four US soldiers in 1991 Iraq went in search of treasure, after finding a map leading to a stash of gold which had been stolen from Kuwait. Which movie was this?

Answer: Three Kings

After finding the map on an Iraqi soldier, four US soldiers (Gates, Barlow, Elgin and Vig) decided to go and retrieve the gold for themselves. During their search, the four men encountered Iraqi civilians who could benefit from the gold more than they could. George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube and Spike Jonze played the four men. Nora Dunn played a reporter they kept trying to get away from, who eventually helped them out.
7. After escaping the collapsing Hamunaptra, Rick, Evie and the others managed to get away with some of the treasure that was stored there, in "The Mummy" (1999). How was this possible?

Answer: Beni had loaded the camels with the loot.

After he led Dr. Chamberlain and his group to Hamunaptra, Beni quickly switched sides after meeting Imhotep and promised to help him get his body parts. Later, as Rick, Evie, Jonathan and Ardeth Bay were fighting Imhotep and his priests, Beni was busy carrying out treasure and loading up the camels. Rick tried to help Beni get out before the last door closed, but Beni ended up trapped inside.

As the group left on the camels, we could see that, unbeknownst to them, the saddlebags contained treasure placed there by Beni. Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah starred in the movie, with Kevin J. O'Connor playing Beni.
8. Which character in "National Treasure" (2004) said, "Who wants to go down the creepy tunnel inside the tomb first?"

Answer: Riley

After pursuing several clues over the course of the movie, Ben's search for the Founding Fathers' treasure led the group to Trinity Church. Using the clue "Beneath Parkington Lane", they found a tunnel entrance behind the tomb of a mason at the church.

After shining their flashlights into the cobwebbed tunnel, Riley made this charming remark, one of many made by him in the movie. Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger and Sean Bean starred in the movie, with Justin Bartha playing Riley.
9. After witnessing a car crash in the desert, various travellers rushed to help the dying driver, Smiler Grogan. Just before he kicked the bucket, Smiler told them he had hidden $350,000 in Santa Rosita. In "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963), what did Smiler say the loot was buried under?

Answer: A big W

After the group was unable to agree on how the loot should be split up if they found it together, the race was on to Santa Rosita, with everyone out for themselves. 'X' may normally mark the spot, but in this movie the treasure was buried underneath four large palm trees shaped like a 'W'. Hilarious from start to finish, the movie starred many great comedic actors of the day including Milton Berle, Buddy Hackett, Sid Caesar, Jonathan Winters and Ethel Merman. Nominated for six Oscars, Stanley Kramer's masterpiece won one for Best Effects, Sound Effects.
10. Jack convinced Joan to go in search of El Corazon, the jewel which was the object of the treasure map she had, in "Romancing the Stone" (1984). In what kind of statue did they find the hidden jewel?

Answer: Bunny

Before he was killed, Joan's brother-in-law mailed her the treasure map. Interested parties then kidnapped Joan's sister, Elaine, in Colombia and promised to release her if Joan brought them the map. On her way to Cartagena to make the exchange, Joan met Jack Colton, rescuer of damsels in distress.

She at first refused to look for the treasure, fearing her sister would be killed, but later decided to take a risk and search for the treasure with Jack. The map led them to a pool in a cave, where they dug out a statue of a bunny. Breaking it open, Jack and Joan found a huge emerald, El Corazon. Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito starred in Robert Zemeckis' romantic movie.
