Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the ski resort where the movie "Hot Tub Time Machine" (2010) is located?

Answer: Kodiak Valley

Kodiak Valley is a fictional resort which was rocking in the 1980s, but had seen better days by 2010. In both times, the guys stay in room 420.
Most of the film was shot at either Big Bear Lake, in Big Bear Valley, California or Fernie, British Columbia.
Fernie is located in the southeastern corner of British Columbia and is distinctive as the only incorporated city in Canada to be surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. Big Bear is in San Bernadino County, about an hour east of Los Angeles. It is home to two of the most popular ski resorts in Southern California.
2. What "Back to the Future" star plays the one-armed bell hop?

Answer: Crispin Glover

Crispin Glover plays the unfortunate bell-hop, and the mystery behind his lost arm is one of the running gags of the film. There are teasers involving juggling chain saws and a freak elevator accident, but in the end he has it knocked off by a passing truck. In the brighter version of the future, his arm is reattached.
Crispin Glover played George McFly in the "Back to the Future" series, which was released in the mid-1980s, the time frame for "Hot Tub Time Machine." Since then, Glover has generally played quirky characters. He was Andy Warhol in "The Doors" (1991) and a strange assassin "Charlie's Angels" (2000), among others.
Wilson was McFly nemesis Biff Tannen. Lloyd was Doctor Emmett Brown. McClure was Dave McFly, George's son.
3. The Russian energy drink that causes the time machine to function is named after what ill-fated city?

Answer: Chernobyl

The energy drink, Chernobli, contains "ingredients which are illegal in the United States" according to Lou. He is uncertain what those ingredients are, but is excited about the fact that they are illegal.
Chernobyl, a city in the Ukraine, was the site of the world's largest nuclear disaster. Because the film takes place in January 1986, Chernobli would have little meaning for non time-travelers, since the nuclear accident at Chernobyl took place on April 26, 1986.
There were 56 immediate deaths, and several thousand secondary deaths related to the radiation leaks. While much of the area near Chernobyl has become habitable, the area around the plant will remain contaminated for thousands of years.
4. How does Adam's break-up with Jennie end up?

Answer: She stabs him with a fork

Adam (John Cusack) breaks up with girlfriend Jennie (Lyndsy Fonseca) a second time, except this time she dumps him. When he tells her she will become fat in the future, she stabs him in the eye with a plastic fork.
Lyndsy Fonseca was on "Desperate Housewives" as Dylan Mayfair and plays the daughter on "How I Met Your Mother."
5. What was the name of the groupie that Nick had sex with?

Answer: Tara

Tara repeated it several times when Nick started saying the name of his wife, Courtney, while they were having sex. Nick justifies having sex with the groupie on the grounds that 1) he should not interfere with the time-space continuum by changing events; 2) Since it is 1986, he has not yet met the woman who would become his wife.
Tara is played by actress Jessica Pare. A native of Montreal, Quebec, she was in "Lost and Delirious" (2001) and "Wicker Park" (2004). Pare was also on television as Courtney Benedict in the series "Jack and Bobby" (2004-05).
6. What "Saturday Night Live" cast member plays the mysterious hot tub repairman?

Answer: Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase is the rather cryptic repair man, who gives indirect hints as to how the hot tub functions and how it could be repaired.
Chase was part of the inaugural cast of "Saturday Night Live" in 1975. He left to go into films, and has made several dozen over 35 years. He is probably most famous as Clark Griswold from the National Lampoon "Vacation" films, as reporter Irwin Fletcher in "Fletch" and Ty Webb in the "Caddyshack" films.
7. What Black Eyed Peas song did Nick introduce to the 1980s?

Answer: Let's Get it Started

"Let's Get it Started," originally called "Let's get Retarded" was a hit for the Black Eyed Peas in 2004 and earned a in 2005 Grammy as "Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group." It is performed in the film by Craig Robinson right after he performs "Jesse's Girl."
The Black Eyed Peas were formed in 1995, but have seen most of their success since 2003.
8. What company does Lou steal the idea for in the alternate reality?

Answer: Google

Lou (Rob Corddry) creates a web search engine called "Lougle." He uses his knowledge of the future to make very sound investments, and states humbly that Lougle is worth several billion dollars.
Lou was nicknamed "The Violator," although it is uncertain why, because he gets his butt kicked in most of the fights we see in the film. At the end of the film, in the alternate future, the name of his yacht is "The Violator."
At the start of the film, Lou is a rather pathetic character, who attempts to kill himself by running his car in a locked garage. Cheering him up after the suicide attempt leads to the road trip, which takes them to the time machine.
9. What is the name of the reporter for "Spin" magazine that Adam meets?

Answer: April

Adam (John Cusack) meets April (Lizzy Caplan) at a Poison concert. He is distracted, as he is trying to find a way to dump his current girlfriend. Once Jennie dumps him, Adam and April spend several hours together before she leaves on a bus. In the alternate future, Adam marries April. She also promotes Nick in her magazine, and he becomes a famous record producer.
Lizzy Caplan got her start in acting as Sara on "Freaks and Geeks" back in 1999. Since then she has been on the WB drama "Related" (2005) and the CBS drama "The Class" (2006) and the Starz series "Party Down" (2009).
10. What is NOT one of the films that the guys discuss after they wind up in 1986?

Answer: "Twelve Monkeys" (1995)

"Time Cop" (1994), starring Jean Claude Van Damm, is the first film mentioned. There is a discussion of fatherhood in terms of "The Terminator" (1984), and there are multiple mentions of "The Butterfly Effect," the 2004 Ashton Kutcher film.
"Twelve Monkeys" (1995) stars Bruce Willis as a time-traveler attempting to stop a global plague from breaking out. It is based on the French film "La Jetee" (1962).
"Hot Tub Time Machine" does play with several conventions of time travel, such as preventing your own birth and using future knowledge for personal gain.
