Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the first person we meet at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Watson Pritchard

"The ghosts are moving tonight, restless, hungry. May I introduce myself? I'm Watson Pritchard. In just a minute I'll show you the only really haunted house in the world. Since it was built over a century ago, seven people including my brother have been murdered in it. Since then, I've owned the house. I've only spent one night there and when they found me in the morning, I was almost dead."
2. Who is the next person we meet?

Answer: Frederick Loren

"I'm Frederick Loren, and I've rented the House on Haunted Hill tonight so that my wife can give a party--a haunted house party. She's so amusing. There'll be food and drinks and ghosts; and perhaps even a few murders. You're all invited. If any of you can spend the next 12 hours in this house I'll give you each 10,000 dollars: or your next of kin in case you don't survive. Ah, but here come our other guests..." So there's the proposition. How much would YOU do for 10,000 dollars?
3. Whose idea was it to have the guests come in funeral cars?

Answer: Annabel

Annabel had the idea for the funeral cars, and Frederick dreamed up the hearse. I don't know if I'd ride in a funeral car--even for 10,000 dollars.
4. Why wouldn't Annabel go to the party?

Answer: She didn't know any of the guests

"This spend the night ghost party was your idea, remember? If it's gonna cost me 50,000 dollars I want you to have fun." Annabel: "The party WAS my idea until you invited all the guests. Why only strangers why none of our friends?"
5. What was the weapon which Mrs. Pritchard used to murder her husband and sister?

Answer: knife

"This is what she used on my brother and her sister, hacked 'em to pieces. We found parts of the bodies all over the house, in places you wouldn't think. Funny thing, the heads have never been found. Hands and feet and things like that, but no heads."
6. What animal does Watson Pritchard throw into the vat of acid?

Answer: rat

"Destoys everything with hair and flesh--just leaves the bones." The animal, at least from what I saw, was too big to be a mouse.
7. Who was the first one injured at the party?

Answer: Lance

Nora was ALMOST injured by the chandelier in the beginning, but remember Lance saved her. He was hit in the head by something in the closet in the basement.
8. What did Nora find in her suitcase?

Answer: head

"Mr. Pritchard, you say your sister-in-law killed a man and a woman here and cut them up? You said they found hands and feet but they never found any heads? Would you like to see one of those heads?! Would you all like to see one of those heads?! Well, then, just follow me!" Nora is the high strung one of the group. Don't you think?
9. What item is in the little coffins that Frederick gives the guests?

Answer: guns

"This was my wife's idea...I think they're rather dangerous. I suppose you all know how to use one of these things, but in case you don't, you just press down this lever with your thumb and then pull the trigger. (BANG) You see, they're loaded."
10. Who was the first person to die at the party?

Answer: Annabel

She was found hanging from the ceiling.
11. Dr. Trent said that the victim had committed suicide. But what did Lance think happened?

Answer: murder

Lance says that it's murder.
12. Who does Lance suspect?

Answer: Frederick

Lance suspects Mr. Loren of killing his wife.
13. Where was the first place Nora saw Annabel after she had died?

Answer: outside the window

This was the part when the rope came around Nora's ankles. She was literally paralyzed with fear.
14. Who is the first person to leave his/her room?

Answer: Trent

"An admission of guilt, doctor?" Frederick Loren asks Dr. Trent. Trent hears someone walking and decides that he and Loren should have a look around--seperately.
15. Who is having an affair with Annabel?

Answer: Trent

And that would be the reason why Dr. Trent wanted to search the house separately. He went in to see Annabel, who wasn't really dead.
16. Who shot Frederick?

Answer: Nora

This question reminds me of the ever popular "Who shot J.R.?" ;-) It made me laugh when I wrote it down. Anyway, Trent told Frederick to look downstairs, and when he goes down, Nora shoots him. Then we hear that blood curdling scream she did so well. Don't watch this movie if you have a headache. That scream goes right through your head.
17. Which characters REALLY die at the end?

Answer: Trent and Annabel

Of course, Annabel dies, I made that kind of obvious. We never see Trent die--the lights go out and you just hear a sound like his throat has been cut. That's what I like about the old horror movies--no need for the blood and guts. We get the point.
18. What colorful director was at the camera for this film?

Answer: William Castle

William Castle has been called the P.T. Barnum of movies. He always had some kind of gimmick for every movie he made.
19. What was the name of the gimmick used for this film?

Answer: Emergo

All the choices mentioned were gimmicks Castle dreamed up. Percepto was used for "The Tingler", also starring Vincent Price, the insurance policy bit was used for "Macabre", and the decide the ending was used for "Mr. Sardonicus". Quite an imaginitive fellow.
20. What was the object that popped 'out' of the screen in movie theaters?

Answer: skeleton

This kind of stuff makes me wish I was around back in 1958. It must have scared the daylights out of the unsuspecting movie audience. It also must have caused a lot of laughs. A glow-in-the-dark skeleton was released at just the right time. But after a while, the kids got wise and started to throw popcorn boxes at it. It must have been a riot.
