Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie begins at a Navy Officer's Club dance on the evening of December 6, 1941. A beautiful, but highly intoxicated woman is dancing with an Air Corps pilot. What is her character's name?

Answer: Liz

Barbara Bouchet played the drunken and promiscuous Liz Eddington. Born during World War II in Reichenberg, Sudentenland, Germany, Bouchet recently appeared as Mrs. Schermerhorn in 2002's "Gangs of New York".
2. Lieutenant Mac McConnell is dancing with his wife at the Officer's Club. She reminds him that he has duty at 6 a.m. What duty does Mac have the following morning?

Answer: Ship's officer commanding

Tom Tryon portrayed the young naval officer. He went on to become a bestselling novelist with the publication of "The Other" in 1972.
3. Navy Captain Rockwell Torrey, played by John Wayne, is shaving when a Marine appears at the entry to his ship's cabin. What does Torrey order for breakfast?

Answer: Bacon and eggs

Torrey is a seasoned Naval Academy graduate who is second-generation Navy. At the time of his death, in 1979, Wayne held the record for actors in a leading role at 142. In 1971 he turned down the title role in "Dirty Harry", which went to Clint Eastwood.
4. Captain Torrey finds his executive officer sleeping on a sofa, fully dressed with an empty liquor bottle nearby. Who plays Commander Paul Eddington?

Answer: Kirk Douglas

Paul's philandering wife Liz is the main reason for his heavy drinking. Douglas has starred in over 80 films, but turned down two movie parts that won Best Actor Academy Awards. He was offered William Holden's part in 1953's "Stalag 17" and Lee Marvin's role in 1965's "Cat Ballou".
5. As he boards his destroyer, Lt. Mac McConnell is greeted by an improperly dressed crewman. What actor played the sloppy enlisted man?

Answer: Slim Pickens

Mac asked the enlisted crewman to "crawl back into a uniform". Pickens was born Louis Bert Lindley, Jr. in 1919, and was a real live cowboy before taking up acting. He is perhaps best remembered as Major "King" Kong, the U.S. Air Force pilot who waved his cowboy hat as he rode a nuclear bomb dropped on the U.S.S.R. in the classic 1964 film "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb".
6. Liz Eddington and her pilot lover wake up on the beach as the first wave of Japanese planes attack Pearl Harbor. Who played the Air Corps officer?

Answer: Hugh O'Brian

Liz and the pilot perish in a car wreck as they speed back to town. Although he has appeared in dozens of film roles, O'Brian seem to be forever attached to his television series "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp", which ran from 1955 to 1961.
7. On the morning of December 7, 1941, a crew member aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Cassidy advised Lt. Mac McConnell that their radio was picking up what sounded like plane-to-plane chatter in Japanese. What actor played this crew member?

Answer: Larry Hagman

The young communications officer did not seem terribly concerned with the radio traffic. The same year that he played Navy Lt. Cline, Hagman became Tony Nelson in a six year run on television's "I Dream of Jeannie". It was another 13 years before we met J.R. Ewing on "Dallas".
8. What Navy admiral did actor Franchot Tone portray?

Answer: Kimmel

Tone, a suave leading man of the 1930s, portrayed the unfortunate Navy Admiral Husband Kimmel. Ten days after the Pearl Harbor attack, Kimmel was removed from command and replaced by Admiral Chester Nimitz. Later investigations into the attack found Kimmel guilty of errors of judgement and of not properly coordinating army-navy efforts to defend Hawaii.

He took early retirement in May, 1942.
9. Veteran actor Dana Andrews played Admiral Broderick, whose military abilities were questionable at best. What was his recommendation following the Japanese attack?

Answer: Prepare to repel an invasion

Broderick's suggestion was overruled by CinCPac and a Seek Out and Engage the enemy order was issued. The inept admiral continued to be a thorn in the side of both his superiors and subordinates. Dana Andrews was a Hollywood leading man during the 1940s and 1950s. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1963 to 1965.
10. Commander Burke, a member of Captain Torrey's crew, questioned his orders to break radio silence after their ship was hit by a torpedo. Torrey replied,"Burke, don't you think the Japanese know by now where we are?" What future television star played Commander Burke?

Answer: Carroll O'Connor

Commander Burke went on to command the same heavy cruiser on which he served under Torrey. O'Connor, who became the legendary Archie Bunker, was not producer Norman Lear's first choice for the starring role in television's "All in the Family". If Mickey Rooney had not refused the role, O'Connor may have faded into obscurity, instead of spending a dozen years on a top rated TV series.
