While Sam is talking with Charly's parents, he is snacking on the seeds and realizes that there is nowhere to dispose of the shells. Charly returns and asks if Sam is ready to go, everyone looks to see what he will do with the seeds, and Sam throws them all into his mouth and chews them up and swallows.

Sam challenges her to say a prayer asking God whether the missionaries were telling the truth. They knelt down in the garden in his backyard and Sam said the prayer. In the book, Charly ends up walking away in the middle of the prayer.

Mark is Charly's live-in boyfriend from New York City. Charly's father hates Mark and hopes that while she is visiting Utah, she will lose interest in him.

The character of the grandmother does not exist in the book. In the movie, she seems to be Charly's soundboard and guardian angel. I guess Jack Weyland thought that Charly could figure things out on her own in the book.

This discussion occurs when Charly is trying to decide what to do with the feelings she is having with the LDS church. Apparently, Charly has a long list of things she has shown interest in and then abandoned. In the book, this interest was playing the harp, not running away with the circus.

This part in the book is one of the most entertaining. Charly sets up a competition between Mark and Sam to see who would be the best husband. This competition included events such as budget-shopping and baby-sitting someone's kid. Mark does really well, but sabotages Sam's every move.
