Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Back in 1979, a frightening movie came out supposedly based on true events. The Lutz family moved into a home on Long Island where a family named DeFeo had been murdered years before. The Lutzes didn't live there long: they claimed the home was too haunted. What's the title of this horror film?

Answer: The Amityville Horror

The Lutz family moved into their new home even though the real estate agent told them about the murders that had taken place years earlier. It didn't take long for strange things to start happening and they soon realized the house was haunted. Less than a year later, in fear for their lives, they fled the house, leaving their possessions behind.
2. If you remember little Carol Anne Freeling staring at a static-filled TV screen and announcing "They're here," then you probably remember the name of this 1982 horror flick that spawned a few sequels. What's the title?

Answer: Poltergeist

Unbeknownst to the Freeling family, the home in which they lived was actually quite haunted. Carol Anne, the younger of two children, was at the center of all the paranormal activity. It wasn't until the end of the movie that we find out why the house was so haunted: it's built on a cemetery, only the developers moved the headstones to make way for a housing development on the property.
3. It all began in 1978. The killer's name? Michael Myers. Which slasher/horror movie featured actress Jamie Lee Curtis in her first feature film role?

Answer: Halloween

In my opinion what made this movie so creepy was the fact that Michael Myers wreaked havoc on a small town without ever saying a word. The film also starred Donald Pleasence as Dr. Loomis, Michael's psychiatrist. Apparently Michael Myers couldn't be killed because "Halloween" spawned numerous sequels.
4. Many horror films turn out to be slasher films like "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th". Then there are the more subtle, psychological horror films. In 2010, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne starred in just such a movie. They played the parents of a boy who seemingly slips into a coma but what he's actually experiencing is far more frightening. Name this movie.

Answer: Insidious

The parents contacted a spiritualist who explained that their son had astral projected into a realm called 'The Further.' Demons were trying to possess his physical body and the race was on to save the boy. If you think this movie ends in one neatly wrapped package, think again. The film lives up to its title.
5. Another psychological horror film made in 2001 starred Nicole Kidman as a mother of two photosensitive children confined to a dreary house just after World War II. Name this excellent movie.

Answer: The Others

The movie was loosely based on Henry James' ghost tale "The Turn of the Screw". It was a box-office success and in my opinion one of Nicole Kidman's best films. I have to admit it: I never saw the twist ending coming.
6. In 1816, while spending time at his summer home with his author friends, Lord Byron suggested that they try their hand at writing a ghost story. The only one who actually followed through was Mary Godwin. What did she name her "ghost" story that was the basis of a 1931 film and many more thereafter?

Answer: Frankenstein

There have been numerous remakes of "Frankenstein". In a 1935 sequel, the monster even had a bride. The very first "Frankenstein" film was a 1910 silent movie written and directed by J. Searle Dawley. The 1931 version that starred Boris Karloff as the monster is still a fan favorite.
7. A well-known horror film was made in 1976 based on a novel by the horror master himself, Stephen King. It starred Sissy Spacek in the title role. It is perhaps the ultimate story of high school revenge. Which film is it?

Answer: Carrie

Who can forget Carrie (Spacek) exacting revenge on her classmates at the high school prom? For effect, the prom scenes were photographed in split screen. This was the movie that propelled Spacek to stardom and featured a young John Travolta as one the bullies.
8. If you enjoy zombie movies then you'll probably remember the one made in 1968. It was directed by George Romero and was the first of a lucrative franchise of "Dead" films. What's its title?

Answer: Night of the Living Dead

Zombies rose up from the grave to attack victims hiding out in a farmhouse. Although this was a low budget film, it has since become a cult classic. "Return of the Living Dead," "Dawn of the Dead," and "Children of the Living Dead" are the official sequels.
9. Richard Donner directed a chilling horror film in 1976. It starred actor Gregory Peck as the adoptive father of a very bad child. Please name this film.

Answer: The Omen

The idea of a "bad seed" or demon child has been done numerous times through the years. Little Damien, as sweet and innocent as he appeared, was able to hide the destructive forces lurking within just by being a child. Who would suspect a child of murder? Even though some eventually recognized his evil nature, no one could truly control Damien. That message was implied at the end of the movie and it was a very frightening message indeed.
10. He's the biggest and baddest werewolf of all. He howled at the moon and had an appetite for killing. Lon Chaney Jr. made the role memorable in 1941. Which horror movie is it?

Answer: The Wolf Man

After he was bitten by a werewolf while trying to kill it, Larry Talbot discovered that he himself turned into a werewolf when the moon was full. Bela Lugosi, Hollywood's "Dracula", had a small but important role in the film.
