Godfrey, the Baron of Ibelin, went to France to find his illegitimate son. The son, Balian, was a blacksmith who had just lost his wife and child. Godfrey wanted to share his wealth and fortune in Jerusalem with Balian, who wanted nothing to do with him. Later, the village priest told Balian that the village did not want him there since his wife committed suicide after the death of their child.

After the priest taunted Balian about his wife being in hell, Balian killed the priest and left the village to find Godfrey.

While Balian was in Godfrey's camp, the village sheriff came to arrest him for the murder of the priest. Godfrey refused to hand him over, and a battle ensued. Godfrey was injured, and was in bad shape once they arrived in Messina. Balian met Guy de Lusignan shortly after arriving in Messina. Just before he died, Godfrey knighted his son and gave him his sword. Balian met Sibylla in Jerusalem.

Balian found that he was the only survivor of the shipwreck, save for a horse. The horse ran off after being freed, but Balian and the horse later found themselves drinking at the same watering hole. The Saracens, Nasir and Mummad, said that the horse belonged to them because it was on Mummad's land. Balian was forced to battle Mummad because he refused to give up the horse.

After killing Mummad, Balian spared the life of Nasir, who claimed to be the servant of Mummad. Nasir guided Balian to Jerusalem, where Balian gave him the horse and let him go on his way.

Sibylla was the Princess of Jerusalem, and was married to Guy de Lusignan. King Baldwin suffered from leprosy, and wore a silver mask to hide his disfigurement. Upon his death, Sibylla would become queen.

Balian was taken to his father's lands at Ibelin and began improving things by first finding water and establishing an irrigation system. Sibylla arrived saying she was on her way to Cana, but had come to Ibelin to see Balian.

Saladin was seeking revenge for Reynald and Guy's attack on a Saracen caravan, and had arrived at Kerak, Reynald's fortress. Balian and his few men battled them in an effort to protect all of the people seeking shelter at Kerak, and were defeated. Nasir, the man whose life Balian had previously spared, spared the life of Balian and his men.

He told them they could enter Kerak, but they would die there. King Baldwin and the army of Jerusalem arrived, and King Baldwin asked Saladin to withdraw or they would all die there. Saladin agreed after King Baldwin promised that Reynald would be punished.

King Baldwin went to Kerak knowing that the ride could kill him. After returning to Jerusalem, he was near death and wanted to conclude his affairs. He and Tiberias asked Balian if he would marry Sibylla if she were free of Guy, and Balian asked what would happen to Guy. When told by Tiberias that Guy would be executed, Balian said he could not be the cause of that.

After King Baldwin died, Sibylla became queen and named Guy as King. Guy sent his knights to kill Balian, and planned for war with Saladin. Balian fought off his assassins and rode to Jerusalem. He said that they should wait at Jerusalem and fight Saladin there, the army could not survive without water. If the army went out to meet Saladin and was defeated, the city would be left defenseless.

After Guy and the Templars moved out, Balian visited Sibylla, who told him to save the people from what she had done.

Balian saw the Hospitaler leaving with the army, and told him he was going to certain death. The Hospitaler responded that all death was certain. Later when Tiberias and Balian travelled to the battlefield, Balian saw that the Hospitaler was among the dead.

When Godfrey knighted Balian, he charged him with safeguarding the helpless, and protecting the people if the King were no more - things which Balian took to heart. While visiting the battlefield, Tiberias had asked Balian to come to Cyprus with him, but Balian felt he had to protect the people of Jerusalem.

He prepared for battle and knighted the men of the city. After the battle had stopped, Balian and Saladin met to discuss terms. Balian gave the Saracens the city, and Saladin agreed to safe passage out of Jerusalem for the people.

While leaving the city, Balian saw Nasir, who gave Balian the horse which Balian had given to him. Sibylla and Balian connected on the road outside of the city, and went to France together.
