In the beginning of the story, Harry, the narrator, told us how he arrived at a posh Hollywood party. It all started when he and a buddy were robbing a toy store. A UPS truck drove by and the alarm was set off, so they tried to escape out the back door. Harry managed to evade the cops, and a woman with a gun, in time to hide amongst a group of darkly-dressed men (like himself).

He entered the building they were surrounding, and was handed a script for a crime drama. The casting agent hired him, and the cops had no idea that he was involved in the robbery.

Harmony read these crime mysteries to her invalid mother and loved them so much that she thought the fictional character could be real. With this in mind, she felt that she could save her sister from their father, who was a child molester. When she turned 18, Harmony left Indiana to head to Los Angeles.

While there, she accidentally killed a fellow actor (who played 'Protocop') when she scared him into falling over her balcony. The same agent who hired Harry also 'discovered' Harmony when she was on the news report for this event. Harmony found the entire collection of these books on the shelf at the party and fell asleep reading them.

Larry hired Gay Perry to give Harry private investigator lessons for his starring role. By chance, he happened to know Harmony and he suggested that Harry check the Domino Room to talk to her. There he met Flicka, a stewardess, and he said that he was a private investigator.

After this, he talked to Harmony (who was his childhood friend from the beginning of the movie) and they swapped life stories. That night, he slept with her friend (but apologized in the morning).

While at a stake-out, Harry and Gay Perry followed a car that they suspected was up to something, only to lose it by a pond. When they stopped, the car drove overhead and crashed into the water. Gay Perry opened the trunk (by shooting the lock with his gun) and pulled a woman in a dress up from the water.

She evidently died of a broken neck, but Gay Perry also shot her in the head in an attempt to open the trunk. They also realized that she wasn't wearing underwear as they pulled her out, a fact which was important for later in the film.

After leaving the scene of the murder, Gay Perry's cell phone was called by the cops, who told him that Harmony committed suicide. Later, Harmony arrived at Harry's hotel room and said that her sister stole her credit cards and ID, spent all of the money, and committed suicide in the city.

She asked him to solve the murder mystery for her, and he headed to the washroom. Here, he found a corpse and Harmony misdirected the cops so that they wouldn't find him. Perry came to help out and they tried throwing the body off the roof and into the dumpster, but they missed and decided to stick it in the trunk and leave it on a street corner.

While in Embery, Harmony lied to her sister to make her feel better by saying that her father was actually one of the cast members from the Johnny Gossamer movie that was filmed in their small town. When her sister arrived in Los Angeles to search for the man she thought was her father, she was killed.

The day after finding the two bodies, Harry and Perry discovered that Harlan Dexter's daughter (who was the subject of the party from the beginning) was the corpse in Harry's hotel room. Perry told Harry that he wouldn't be getting the part in the detective movie that was cast by Larry, because Larry was using him to shave a couple million from Colin Farrell's salary. Also, Perry told Harmony that Harry wasn't a private eye.

After discovering Harmony's stage name was Allison Ames (the same as the woman who commissioned Perry for the stake-out), Harry headed back to her house and tried to talk to her, but she slammed the door on his finger and was forced to take him to the hospital to have it sewn back on.

At another location, Harry arrived and a couple of men jumped out and nearly ripped his finger off again. They headed back to the hospital, but Harmony said that they needed to help Perry before he fell into a trap.

She got out of her car during a fight, but a woman with purple hair (who lured Perry into the trap) took her car with Harry passed out in the back seat.

When Harry woke up in the back of the car, one of the thugs (the other was killed) and the girl with the purple hair arrived. The thug shot the woman and killed her, but Harry managed to get the gun off the bed and killed the other thug. In this process, his finger came off and a dog ate it. Back at the hotel, Harry kicked Harmony out after she confessed that she slept with Harry's best friend in high school. Later, Harmony realized that since the victim in the trunk wasn't wearing underwear, she was from an insane asylum.

Harlan stuck his daughter in a mental institution in order to shut her up, and make the public feel like they stopped fighting (also so that he could keep his dead wife's money for himself). Perry and Harry arrived at the asylum and were caught by thugs.

The thugs tortured the two (like in the Johnny Gossamer books), but they escaped and tried to prevent Veronica Dexter's cremation. Perry got shot and the bullet hit Harry as well, but it hit a book in Harry's chest, so he didn't die. He shot and killed Dexter and went to check on Harmony, but she told him that the bullet went through the book in his chest, and once again, he went to the hospital.

In the end, Harry, Harmony, and Perry discovered that Harmony's sister went to Los Angeles to find her real father, who she thought was Dexter, and she walked in on him sleeping with the Veronica double. Using Harmony's credit cards, she hired Perry to tape this act of incest, and she killed herself thinking that both of her fathers were sexual abusers. They returned to Indiana for the funeral, and Perry beat up on Harmony's bedridden, abusive father because, like her sister, he was weak and defenseless.
In the end, Harry was working for Perry, and his narration ended.
