Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which DP can be credited for the photography on 'Delicatessen' (1991), 'Se7en' (1995), 'The Beach' (2000), and 'Panic Room' (2002)?

Answer: Darius Khondji

He was an NYU film major and worked his way up through the ranks of assistant camera and first assistant camera. 'Se7en' and 'Panic Room' were both, of course, directed by David Fincher. The cinematography in 'Panic Room' was actually quite remarkable, but it didn't really contribute to the film (Fincher's problem, not Khondji's).

Interestingly, Khondji was apparently fired part way through production, so who really knows how much of 'Panic Room' can be attributed to his talents?
2. Who photographed the Darren Aronofsky films 'Pi' (1998) and 'Requiem for a Dream' (2000)?

Answer: Matthew Libatique

'Pi' was very low-budget, but the photography was still pretty amazing. 'Requiem for a Dream' had a much bigger budget, and most of it was spent on neat cameras like the robotic one (called a Milo) used for the scene when Sara cleans the apartment. Aronofsky basically used this film to prove to the big studios that he could use all the gizmos.
3. Who served as cinematographer for the Wes Anderson films 'Bottle Rocket' (1996), 'Rushmore' (1998), and 'The Royal Tenenbaums' (2001)?

Answer: Robert D. Yeoman

Apparently Anderson likes the way he treats his quirky, idiosyncratic films.
4. 'The Usual Suspects' (1995), 'Three Kings' (1999), and 'X-Men' (2000) share what DP?

Answer: Newton Thomas Sigel

'Three Kings' had a very distinctive look to it, which heightened the realism of the film. I guess director Bryan Singer liked working with him in 'The Usual Suspects', since he brought him back for 'Apt Pupil (1998) and 'X-Men'.
5. Who uses the pseudonym 'Peter Andrews' for cinematographer credits on some of the films he directs?

Answer: Steven Soderbergh

He used this pseudonym for the DP credit on 'Traffic' (2000) and 'Ocean's Eleven' (2001). His father's name is Peter, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the pseudonym.
6. Which Academy Award winning cinematographer photographed 'Cool Hand Luke' (1967), 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' (1969), 'American Beauty' (1999) and 'Road to Perdition' (2002)?

Answer: Conrad L. Hall

He won Oscars for 'Butch Cassidy' and 'American Beauty'. He wasn't even nominated for 'Cool Hand Luke', though.
7. Who photographed 'The Thin Red Line' (1998), 'Almost Famous' (2000) and 'Vanilla Sky' (2001)?

Answer: John Toll

He also did 'Legends of the Fall' (1994) and 'Braveheart' (1995). I count 'The Thin Red Line' as one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, so I certainly hold a deep respect for this man's skills.
8. Which cinematographer shot Alex Proyas' 'The Crow' (1994) and 'Dark City' (1998)?

Answer: Dariusz Wolski

Both of these films were very dark. Proyas went on to photograph 'A Perfect Murder' (1998), which was very slick, and 'The Mexican' (2001) which had less-than-notable cinematography, but a truly rotten storyline.
9. Who photographed the low-budget political drama directed by previous critic Rod Lurie, 'The Contender' (2000)?

Answer: Denis Maloney

I think the cinematography in this film is really great. Partly because they were working on such a low budget, the film contains a number of long single takes with steadicams that are really breathtaking. I consider this a big step up from Maloney's work on 'Independence Day' (1994), though 'ID4' scored a lot more at the box-office.
10. Who is well-known as the cinematographer who repeatedly works with the Coen brothers?

Answer: Roger Deakins

Their collaborations include 'Barton Fink' (1991), 'The Hudsucker Proxy' (1994), 'Fargo' (1996), 'The Big Lebowski' (1998), 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' (2000), 'The Man Who Wasn't There' (2001), and 'Intolerable Cruelty' (2003). Deakins has also worked on such great films as Frank Darabont's 'The Shawshank Redemption' (1994) and Ron Howard's 'A Beautiful Mind' (2001). Sonnenfeld also shot some of the Coen brothers' films, but their pairing was not as notorious as the one with Deakins.
