In 2009, director Ann Fontaine gave us "Coco Before Chanel". The film depicts the life of French fashion designer Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel (1883-1971). Audrey Tautou plays the young Coco who was a seamstress and, at night, an entertainer in a cabaret. With the help of a wealthy lover, she becomes a fashion consultant.

Her designs changed the world of women's fashion, bringing a style and elegance never before seen, and creating the Chanel brand still in existence today. Audrey Tautou is a French actress who starred in the delightful 2001 film "Amelie".
2. Lance Armstrong, 2015

"The Program" is a 2005 film about American cyclist Lance Armstrong who won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005. He was born in Plano, Texas in 1971, and in 1993 he won the professional World Championship. He survived metastatic testicular cancer, and went on to found the Livestrong Foundation to assist others with cancer (remember those yellow bracelets?).

However, this great legacy was tainted when it was determined that he had used performance enhancing drugs. He was stripped of his achievements and banned from all sports for life. Actor Ben Foster, who played Armstrong, has been on TV and in movies.

His film roles include "The Punisher", "Alpha Dog" and "X-Men: The Last Stand".
3. Marilyn Monroe, 2011

Michelle Williams became a household name when she played Jen Lindley on "Dawson's Creek", beginning in 1998. In 2012, Michelle was awarded a Golden Globe Award for her performance in "My Week with Marilyn" in 2011. The film is from the perspective of a British production assistant, Colin Clark, working on the set of "The Prince and the Showgirl", which featured Marilyn and Sir Laurence Olivier.

At that time, Marilyn was also honeymooning with Arthur Miller. The pressures of the film, the marriage and her fans was exhausting her, and Colin provided her with a much needed respite. Michelle has also appeared in "Manchester by the Sea" and "Shutter Island".
4. J. Edgar Hoover, 2011

Leonardo DiCaprio is a famous actor who has had roles in block-buster movies like "Titanic", "The Departed" and "The Aviator". In the latter, he played mogul Howard Hughes. DiCaprio first appeared on the small screen on the sitcom "Growing Pains", before he became one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

In 2016, he won a Best Actor Oscar for his role in "The Revenant". In 2011, he played the lead role in the biographical film "J. Edgar". J. Edgar Hoover was the head of the F.B.I. for almost fifty years, serving under eight presidents.

The film deals with both the professional and private life of this enigmatic man.
5. Linda Lovelace, 2013

For those of you too young to remember, Linda Susan Boreman, better known by her stage name, Linda Lovelace (1949-2002), became a well-known pornographic actress. In 1972 she starred in the first hard-core porn movie to go mainstream, i.e., "Deep Throat" (this did NOT refer to the Watergate informer).

It was later discovered that her abusive husband had forced her to do the part, and she later became a spokesperson for the anti-pornography movement. "Lovelace" featured American actress Amanda Seyfried in the title role. Among Amanda's other films are "Mamma Mia", "Mean Girls", "Dear John" and "Ted 2".
6. Alfred Hitchcock, 2012

British film director Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) was known as the "Master of Suspense". He was one of the pioneers of the thriller genre in movies. His films had a psychological aspect that kept the viewer on the edge of his seat. In 1960, his film "Psycho" started a revolution in the genre. For years, people were afraid to take showers! Among his other mind-bending films are: "Vertigo", "Rear Window", "The Birds" and "North by Northwest".

He was known for having cameos in his films, including "Lifeboat", which took place in the middle of the ocean. "Hitchcock", the 2012 film, reveals the difficulties in making "Psycho" and starred Sir Anthony Hopkins, Oscar winning actor in "Silence of the Lambs".
7. Edward Snowden, 2016

"Snowden" is the story of computer professional and former CIA employee, Edward Snowden, who leaked classified NSA information, including their illegal surveillance techniques, in 2013, without authorization. He was charged with violating the Espionage Act of 1917, and 'theft of government property'.

In order to avoid incarceration, Snowden sought asylum in Russia. Hero or traitor? The role in the eponymous film was played by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Gordon-Levitt began acting at the age of six.

His break-out role was on the TV show "3rd Rock from the Sun", where he played Tommy Solomon, the oldest of the crew, stuck in the body of a teenager. He has gone on to the big screen with roles in "Inception" and "500 Days of Summer".
8. Grace Kelly, 2014

Actress Grace Kelly (1929-1982) had a 'fairy tale' life. She also appeared in the movies "Rear Window", "To Catch a Thief" and "High Noon". In 1955 she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in "The Country Girl". That same year, at the Cannes Film Festival, she met Prince Rainier of Monaco.

They were married the following year. "Grace of Monaco" depicts her life after her marriage, her possible return to Hollywood, and the difficult choice she was forced to make. Australian actress Nicole Kidman assayed the role of the beautiful princess. Kidman has starred in many movies in her storied career, e.g. "Eyes Wide Shut", "To Die For", "Moulin Rouge!" and "The Hours" - for which she won a Best Actress Oscar.
9. Alan Turing, 2014

"The Imitation Game" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. The film told the story of Cambridge graduate and mathematical genius Alan Turing. During World War II, Turing was recruited by MI6, the British intelligence agency, to help crack the Nazi codes, including Enigma. Turing and his associates built a machine that was able to crack the codes.

In 1952, it was discovered that Turing was homosexual, and he was sent to prison. Turing is beautifully played by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch has appeared in films which include "Doctor Strange", "Sherlock" and "12 Years a Slave".
10. Joy Mangano, 2015

"Joy" is a film about entrepreneur Joy Mangano and her self-wringing Miracle Mop. It depicts four generations, focusing on how Joy Mangano becomes the matriarch and founder of her own business dynasty. The movie details the machinations behind the business, the friendships, betrayals, heartaches and joy.

The film was directed by David O. Russell, and garnered a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for actress Jennifer Lawrence who portrayed Mangano. Jennifer Lawrence is a star in her own right, having appeared as Katniss Everdeen in the "Hunger Games" franchise, as well as "American Hustle", and "Silver Linings Playbook" for which she won an Oscar for Best Actress.
11. Martin Luther King, Jr., 2014

"Selma" is about the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965, which became a battleground in the fight for civil rights and voting rights for blacks. At the forefront of the battle was minister and civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968).

It focuses on the three month period when the fight for voting rights was waged against violent opposition, and ended up with President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It shows how Dr. King and his followers changed the course of history forever. Martin Luther King, Jr. was played by David Oyelowo, an actor born in Oxford, England in 1976. Oyelowo's other credits include "Interstellar" and "A Most Violent Year", both in 2014.
12. Margaret Keane, 2014

You may not have heard the name Margaret Keane but, if you were around in the 1960s, you couldn't help but see her paintings of big-eyed waifs. Keane was born in Tennessee in 1927, as Peggy Doris Hawkins. She became one of the most commercially successful artists of all time.

Initially, the paintings were attributed to Margaret's husband Walter, until she challenged that notion and received the credit she deserved. "Big Eyes" tells the story of her legal battles and ultimate success. The ubiquitous Amy Adams played Keane. Adams has been in other films which include "Arrival", "Man of Steel" and "American Hustle".
13. James Brown, 2014

The Godfather of Soul, James Brown (1933-2006), finally got his own biographical movie in 2014. "Get on Up" tells the story of singer James Brown who went from extreme poverty in South Carolina to becoming one of the world's greatest and most influential musicians. From his turbulent childhood, to his stint in prison, his battle against racism and his creative, new sound, there will never be another artist quite like him. American actor Chadwick Bosman who played James Brown, is no stranger to biographical parts, having played Jackie Robinson in the 2013 movie, "42".

He also appeared in "Captain America: Civil War" in 2016.
14. Margaret Thatcher, 2011

"The Iron Lady" is a portrait of Britain's first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) from 1979 to 1990. She served as the leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. The film focuses on her later years, after her husband's death, while revisiting scenes from her past.

The role was played by the consummate actress Meryl Streep who, not only 'nails' the accent, but the look as well. Streep is often called the "best actress of her generation". From heart-rending films like "Sophie's Choice", to comedies like "Death Becomes Her", to musicals like "Mamma Mia", one would be hard-pressed to find something this woman can't do! "The Iron Lady" is just one of the films for which she received an Oscar.
15. Stephen Hawking, 2014

"The Theory of Everything" is based on the book "Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen" by Jane Hawking, published in 2002. It is the story of one of the most brilliant scientists of this or any other time. It explores Hawking's life as a student of cosmology at Cambridge in the 1960s, through his diagnosis of ALS (Ameotrophic Lateral Cclerosis) at 21 years old, where he was given two years to live.

It goes on to show how he met his wife, Jane Wilde, at Cambridge, and how he became a husband, father and successor to Albert Einstein, all while his body was betraying him. British actor Eddie Redmayne won an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Hawking.

He has also appeared in films which include "Les Miserables" and "The Danish Girl".
