Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Return to Oz" screenplay is mostly based on the novel "The Marvelous Land of Oz".

Answer: False

It is in fact mostly based on "Ozma of Oz". In this novel, Dorothy, Ozma, Tik Tok, Billina and friends rescue the Ev family from the Nome King.
2. Walter Murch was fired from directing the film.

Answer: True

After a very disastrous first few weeks, Disney canned Walter. It was only after his good friend George Lucas persuaded Disney that Walter got the job back.
3. Which actor had to literally bend over backwards to play Tik Tok?

Answer: Michael Sundin

He had to walk backwards, too, and wasn't allowed to be inside Tik Tok more than 10 minutes at a time. He died of AIDS in July 1989. R.I.P., dear Michael!
4. Emma Ridley tried out for the role of Dorothy.

Answer: True

Instead, she got the part of Queen Ozma.

Answer: England

It proved less expensive to shoot there.
7. How many drafts of the screenplay did Walter Murch and Gill Dennis go through before coming up with a workable version?

It was very frustrating having to cut scene that included an alternate opening, scenes with the Tin Man and Cowardly lion and the rest of the Army of Oz.

Answer: Billina

It slowed down production time quite a bit and really frustrated Mak Wilson.

The title was changed after they won a major copyright battle with the studio which produced an animated TV movie in 1964 of the same name.
10. Which song did Billina lip synch to, in her first screen test, entertaining the rest of the crew?

Answer: My Way

That just proves how happy they were that she actually worked. (Information from Cinefex Magazine, June 1985)
