Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 2004 romantic comedy starred Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston. He is an insurance risk assessor, and she is a free-spirited lady with a pet ferret. The couple have many adventures, and end up together at the end of the movie. What's the name of this film?

Answer: Along Came Polly

Although I really enjoyed this film, it was panned by the media and Stiller earned a "Golden Raspberry" for his (allegedly) bad performance in the film.
2. This is a sweet 2010 movie about a young girl (Amanda Seyfried), who travels to Verona, Italy. There she meets a group of women who answer letters, left in a wall of a courtyard and addressed to the heroine of a famous Shakespearean love story. In the end, the young lady finds her own love story. Can you name this film?

Answer: Letters to Juliet

I love this movie because it has two love stories! Amanda Seyfried's character meets Charlie (Christopher Egan) and falls in love. But Charlie's grandmother, Claire (the talented Vanessa Redgrave) meets her old boyfriend, Lorenzo (played by Redgrave's real-life husband, Franco Nero.
3. This 1964 thriller starred Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland and Joseph Cotten. It tells the story of a woman engaged to a man who is already married. During a party, the man is murdered, and Bette Davis' character is blamed. After the man's death, the woman begins to slowly lose her mind. Or does she have someone helping her go crazy? Can you remember the name of this film?

Answer: Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte

There was quite a battle about the casting of this movie, as the producers originally wanted to reunite Bette Davis with Joan Crawford after the success of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?". But Crawford turned down the role; as did Vivien Leigh, Loretta Young, Barbara Stanwyck and Katharine Hepburn.
4. This 2006 movie tells the story of an 11-year old girl (Keke Palmer) who loves to spell, and decides to enter a spelling contest. It shows her determination, as well as explores her relationship with her mother (Angela Basset) and spelling coach (Lawrence Fishburne). What's the film's name?

Answer: Akeelah and the Bee

The movie happily ends with Akeelah becoming co-champion with her friend, Dylan (Sean Michael Afable), making her neighborhood proud. The movie gained praise from critics.
5. This quirky 1998 comedy stars Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz. Ted's (Ben Stiller's) love story begins painfully, when he has a "zipper accident" while going to pick up his high school prom date. But he doesn't give up and comically contends with several other suitors for the lady. In the end, they end up together. What is this funny film?

Answer: There's Something About Mary

The movie gained fame because of its very funny plot and all the talented actors who supported the main co-stars, including Matt Dillon, Brett Favre, Jeffrey Tambor, Sarah Silverman and Markie Post.
6. This 1950 drama stars Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. It tells the story of a Broadway star and a fan who becomes way too involved in the star's life. In the end, the fan's devious ways catch up with her as she falls victim to a similar fan's attentions. What's the name of this award-winning movie?

Answer: All About Eve

This movie has the distinction of being nominated for 14 Academy Awards. Four of those nominations were for four female acting Oscars (Davis and Baxter for best actress; and Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for supporting actress). The movie is also the inspiration for the Broadway musical "Applause".
7. This 1989 movie talks about the topic of whether men and women can ever be "just friends". If we take the example of the title characters, I guess not! Stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have lots of fun while they try to disprove the legend. Can you pick the correct name of this film?

Answer: When Harry Met Sally

The movie's most famous scene, at the deli, was not originally in the script. But, while filming, the consensus was that the film was too focused on Harry. Billy Crystal said they needed something for Sally to talk about, and the idea was born. Meg Ryan was the one whose performance was memorable, but it was director Rob Reiner's 75-year old mother who famously said, "I'll have what she's having!"
8. This funny 1986 movie is about a woman (Kathleen Turner) attending her 25th high school reunion, just after separating from her high school sweetheart (Nicolas Cage). She goes back in time and remembers why she fell in love with him - and, in the end, they are reconciled. What is the title of this quirky movie?

Answer: Peggy Sue Got Married

This movie has several very amusing scenes. My favorite is the seance in Peggy's grandfather's lodge. I think Nicolas Cage is very charming in this movie. The title of this movie comes from a Buddy Holly song.
9. Which 1985 comedy starred Rosanna Arquette and Madonna? The story is about a woman (Arquette) who becomes fascinated with a girl (Madonna) who is the subject of a series of personals ads. After witnessing a meeting between the girl and her eager suitor, she becomes involved in a wild series of events.

Answer: Desperately Seeking Susan

Since Madonna was one of the stars, this movie had lots of music, and featured performances by Aretha Franklin, Run DMC, Otis Redding and others. The movie also led to a stage version, in London. The stage show closed in just 19 days.
10. This 1989 movie starred Jessica Tandy as an aging Caucasian lady who reluctantly accepts the services of an African-American chauffeur named Hoke (Morgan Freeman). The story explores her life, over 25 years, and how her interaction with Hoke changes and enriches her life. In doing so, the film also explores the subject of race relations. Can you name this heartwarming movie?

Answer: Driving Miss Daisy

This movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture, in 1990. I especially enjoyed the parts where Daisy teaches Hoke to read, and where Hoke listens to Dr. Martin Luther King's speech in the car.
