Answer: Cast Away

"Cast Away" is the story of FedEx engineer Chuck Nolan, who finds himself marooned on a remote island. He befriends a volleyball and waits it out as best he can. He eventually makes it home, via a makeshift raft, to his fiancée, Kelly (played by Helen Hunt), but it isn't good news, as life has moved on for her.

"The Carpetbaggers" was a 1961 novel from Robbins, which turned into this 1964 film that is cited as one of the landmarks films of the sexual revolution that erupted during the 1960s. The film stars George Peppard, whose character, Jonas Cord, is loosely based on Howard Hughes.

The film also starred Alan Ladd as Nevada Smith. Ladd would pass away before the film was completed, however, because of its great success, a prequel "Nevada Smith" was made in 1966 with Steve McQueen assuming the title role.

When Catherine Ballou's father is killed by Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin), she hires a drunken gunman (also played by Lee Marvin) to take revenge. The slightly comical 1965 movie is a musical, and features the music of Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye. Cat falls into bad company and as an outlaw, is sentenced to hang.

A daring rescue as the trapdoor opens provides a happy ending. Lee Marvin won an Oscar for his performance in this movie.

Answer: The Cat in the Hat

The book by Dr. Seuss is iconic but this 2003 fantasy film... not so. In fact many critics would call it "The Cat that Went Flat". Mike Myers is a tall, anthropomorphic, wise-cracking cat who wears a hat that is loaded with a range of unrealistic tools and gadgets.

He wants to teach the Walden children how to have fun but what ensues is pure chaos and destruction. You could say it was a catastrophe.

Answer: Catch Me If You Can

Set in the late 1960s, Frank Abagnale Jr runs away from home when his father, whom he idolises, gets into trouble with the IRS. Like a chameleon, he adopts new personas on the way to making money to survive. He is very successful at this and portrays himself as a doctor, airline pilot, and a lawyer.

He passes millions of dollars in bad cheques. He is ultimately caught by FBI agent Carl Hanratty, and after serving some time in prison, he is employed by the US government as a bank security expert.

T.S. Eliot wrote the poems, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" (1939), Andrew Lloyd Webber created the stage play, "Cats" (1981), and now Tom Hooper directs the musical film version in 2019. This would be Hooper's second feature film, following on from his success with "Les Miserables" in 2012. James Corden (Bustopher Jones) and Rebel Wilson (Jennyanydots) are joined in this musical romp by such luminaries as Dame Judi Dench, Idris Elba and Taylor Swift as the Jellicle cats decide which one of their tribe will make the annual ascension to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life.

Full of Australian humour, the little guy wins in the end in this classic 1997 movie. It had a host of well-loved stars of the Australian screen, including Eric Bana in his first movie, Charles 'Bud' Tingwell in a cameo role as a Queens Counsel, and Michael Caton as Darryl Kerrigan.

It also brought many phrases into the Aussie lexicon. When someone gives you something you like, you say "It's going straight to the poolroom." If something is unrealistic: "Tell him he's dreamin'!" And when in the midst of some gorgeous scenery, it's "How's the serenity?" that you utter.

Answer: Catwoman

A meek woman is drowned and revived by an Egyptian Mau cat. In her re-birth she is endowed with the senses and reflexes of a cat. She pursues her killers, walking a fine line between good and evil, while, at the same time, a vigilant detective pursues her.

The 2004 film was a box office failure and was mauled by critics, with one (Rotten Tomatoes) going so far as to say "Halle Berry is the lone bright spot, but even she can't save this laughable action thriller".

Answer: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

In this angst-ridden movie, which earned her a second Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Maggie Pollitt, Taylor tries to both save her marriage and lay claim to her husband's family fortune. The patriarch of the family, Big Daddy (Burl Ives) is dying, and Brick (Paul Newman) has taken to drinking to forget the pain of a blighted career.

The estranged couple take tentative steps towards reconciliation at the end of the film.

Answer: Catch-22

Buck Henry was responsible for the screenplay to this hilarious black comedy, which was based on a book of the same name by Joseph Heller. Set in World war II, the story deals with a man (Yossarian) trying desperately to get himself certified insane so that he can be relieved from flying bombing missions.

However, there is a catch... to fly the number of missions required a pilot would have to be crazy. On the other hand, if a pilot refuses to fly those missions, it indicates that he is sane. Garfunkel's character, Lieutenant Nately, who falls in love with a prostitute.
