Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cars played a greater role than cats in this movie about teenagers "cruising the drag" on the last day of summer in 1962. Harrison Ford had a small role, as Bob Falfa, in which of these movies?

Answer: American Graffiti

"American Graffiti" (1973) starred Ron Howard and Richard Dreyfuss as friends who were both supposed to be leaving their hometown the next day to attend college. Each had doubts about their futures as they participated in various events during the last night of summer. Ford's character was a hotshot with a hot car who was looking for a race with Paul LeMat's character who was known to be almost unbeatable.

2. Which of these movies starred Audie Murphy as a young ne'er do well who inherited a ranch from the man who fathered him out of wedlock?

Answer: Cast a Long Shadow

In "Cast a Long Shadow" (1959), Murphy's character was surprised to find himself heir to the Keenan Ranch, and tried to turn his life around as a result. He was opposed by some townspeople who viewed his illegitimacy as a mark of bad character, and others who felt he deserved neither ranch nor the love of his girlfriend (Terry Moore). John Dehner also starred.

3. Which of these films, an early entry in the "Carry On..." series, was the first to feature regular performer, Sidney James, as Sgt. Frank Wilkins?

Answer: Carry On Constable

When Ted Ray was unavailable, Sid James stepped into the role of police sergeant Frank Wilkins in "Carry On Constable" (1960), the fourth film in the long running series. (The incorrect choices all came at least seven years later, and were between 15 and 18 in the order.) The plot involved an outbreak of 'flu at Wilkins' station and the havoc wrought by incompetent rookie constables brought in to fill the gap. Regular Kenneth Connor played Constable Constable, with Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims and Hattie Jacques all on hand.

4. The director of which of these movies also directed "Django Unchained"?

Answer: Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood

Starring Leonardo di Caprio and Brad Pitt as a nearly washed-up TV star (Leo) and his faithful stunt double (Brad), "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" (2019) took place in 1969, and flirted with the story of Sharon Tate and the Manson Family. The main plot concerned the relationship between star and double, as they negotiated the inevitable slide into the world of foreign language B movies. Oscars went to Brad Pitt for his supporting role, and to the production design team. Quentin Tarantino directed and was Oscar-nominated for both directing and screenplay, but won neither. (He did win for writing "Django Unchained" (2012).)

The incorrect choices were directed by Sergio Leone ("West" and "America") and Robert Rodriguez ("Mexico").

5. Sports or sporting equipment are at least marginally involved in each of these movies. Which does NOT involve any sort of ball?

Answer: Chariots of Fire

"Chariots of Fire" (1981) was about running and faith and the 1924 Olympics in Paris. Based on the true story of Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) and Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson) it followed them from university in England to the competition in France and explored the struggles each had to overcome, including Liddell's decision not to race on the sabbath.

"Heaven Can Wait" (1978) involved a recently deceased American football quarterback. "White Men Can't Jump" (1992) involved basketball. In "Cast Away" (2000), Tom Hanks had long chats with his friend Wilson, a volleyball.

The photo is a fire hydrant, which was intended to point you to the title that included the word "fire".
6. One of these is a musical featuring the music of Kander and Ebb, including "Maybe This Time" and "Tomorrow Belongs to Me". Which one?

Answer: Cabaret

"Cabaret" (1972) won eight Oscars including Best Actress (Liza Minnelli), Supporting Actor (Joel Grey) and Director (Bob Fosse). The songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb also included the title number, performed by Minnelli. The story revolved around her character, Sally Bowles, a singer at the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin in the 1930s and her relationships with various men with Germany's slide into Nazism as a backdrop. Grey is particularly sleazy as the Master of Ceremonies of the club.

Of the other choices, only "Calamity Jane" (1953) was a musical, starring Doris Day and featuring music by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster.

The photo of a cat in my backyard was meant to remind you of the name of the club in "Cabaret".
7. Which of these films set during World War II starred James Cagney as a bush pilot?

Answer: Captains of the Clouds

"Captains of the Clouds" (1942) was about a group of Canadian bush pilots, led by Cagney, who decided to enlist in the air force when war broke out and the problems they both encountered and caused before eventually reaching the other side of the Atlantic and the fighting. One scene featured Billy Bishop VC presiding over a wings ceremony that Cagney's character decided to "buzz" (fly over at very low altitude). Dennis Morgan, Alan Hale and George Tobias also played pilots.

The image of clouds should have helped a bit.
8. In which of these crime-based thrillers did a newspaperman (James Stewart) try to prove the innocence of a convicted murderer (Richard Conte)?

Answer: Call Northside 777

In "Call Northside 777" (1948), Stewart's character became involved in the supposed killer's story because of an ad placed by the convicted man's mother. Though he initially thought the man in prison was probably guilty, the reporter continued to dig and eventually changed his mind. Proving what he believed to be true was more difficult.

9. Which of these was a fantasy in which the main character aged backwards?

Answer: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Brad Pitt starred as the title character in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (2008) who was born with the features and attributes of a very old man, and grew younger as time passed. This odd condition made relationships of a romantic variety difficult for him, as the females in his life were ageing in the normal manner. He and his friend Daisy (Cate Blanchett) did manage to "meet in the middle" when they were in their forties, but each continued to progress in their separate ways, until Benjamin was a babe in arms and Daisy an old lady.

The image of buttons should have been of some help.
10. Maggie the Cat and her husband, Brick, faced off in which film, based on a play by Tennessee Williams?

Answer: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

The action of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1958) revolved around the interactions of the Pollitt family during a family get-together that was destined to be a farewell for Big Daddy (Burl Ives), the family patriarch who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman sparred as Maggie and Brick, as he was less than receptive to her romantic advances, and all sorts of family secrets were aired in the course of the gathering.
