Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What character did Robert Webb play?

Answer: Karl

Robert Webb played Karl while his comedy partner, David Mitchell, played Harry.
Otto was played by Darren Boyd and Mike was played by Peter Capaldi. Karl had fallen out with Harry after Harry discovered Karl in one of the magic boxes with his wife. Karl then became a medium claiming to be able to speak to dead relatives of his audience.
2. What was the name of Harry's wife, who he accidentally decapitated after finding out that she and Karl were having an affair?

Answer: Carol

Carol, played by Sarah Hadland, was married to Harry but one day, between performances, he found her in a prop box with Karl. That night, in the middle of their French Revolution act, he accidentally cut her head off.
3. Where did the magic competition take place?

Answer: Jersey

The magic competition took place on the island of Jersey. This can be seen on the flier that Harry was given in the magic shop. Harry had a fear of flying so had to travel across on the ferry. Originally, Harry and Karl were to reunite for the competition, but an argument at the audition stage pitted them against each other.
4. What addition to his performance did Karl's stooge, and plant in the audience, pride himself on?

Answer: His trip

Karl's act for the final of the competition was a medium act. He planted a stooge in the audience, as he couldn't really connect with the dead. The stooge prided himself on the fact that he did not over-act but did a slight trip on the way to the stage. On that night, however, he tripped for real and knocked himself out.
5. Harry made a pros and cons list about Linda. What was on both the pros and the cons?

Answer: Her bum

Linda found a pros and cons list in Harry's pocket. On it he had listed the things that he did and didn't like about her. Her bum was on both which confused her. She said "It's big but you like it?"
6. What shop did Harry work at, after his act with Karl broke up?

Answer: Wilkinson

Harry had a job working at Wilkinson, demonstrating knives. This went wrong when he demonstrated them for a couple, using his old magic skills to make them think that he had cut into his own arm. They complained and he was fired. Linda also worked in this shop which is how she became involved in his magic act.
7. What was the name of the sleazy magician who claimed to have slept with Linda to wind Harry up?

Answer: Tony White

Tony was played by Steve Edge, who is perhaps most well known for his role in "Phoenix Nights". Tony was also a competitor in the magic competition, with a reputation for propositioning women, which he did on the ferry over to Jersey when he was talking to Harry. Tony had a son who competed in the junior competition but they did not enjoy a very good relationship. Tony's son had devised a trick with a bunch of flowers, which Tony stole for his performance in the final.
8. When Karl volunteered to do the guillotine trick in the final, Harry killed him.

Answer: False

Harry was initially going to repeat the guillotine trick that killed Carol with his new assistant Linda. However, she chickened out at the last minute after a discussion with Karl. Karl then stepped in and it appeared that he had his head cut off until he appeared in a box in the theatre.
9. What song did Linda play, when she auditioned to be part of Harry's magic act?

Answer: Gay Bar

Linda initially told Harry that she had experience but then confessed that she had never been a magician's assistant before. Instead, she danced to "Gay Bar" by the band Electric Six. She said that she used to practice the dance in the stock room of the shop where they both worked.
Harry was left somewhat speechless by this but said that he liked it.
10. Who directed the film?

Answer: Andrew O'Connor

The film was directed by Andrew O'Connor, who is a former member of the Magic Circle. He was thrown out of the Magic Circle after making a programme about how tricks were done.
Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain were two of the writers on the film and Ollie Madden was a producer.
