It was nominated for Academy Awards but lost in each category, including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Director.
The movie was based on the novel by James M. Cain, which in turn was based on the true story of Ruth Snyder, the subject of a notorious 1920's murder trial.
Fred MacMurry 's reputation at the time was for playing nice guys, so he didn't feel he was up to the challenge of this role but Wilder convinced him to play the part.
"Double Indemnity" is considered one of Barbara Stanwyck's best movies although she is also known for her TV work in "The Big Valley" and "The Colbys".
