Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Towards the beginning of the film, a fair-haired young man named Freddie comes to the Fishpaw residence to pick up Lu-Lu for a date. What is Freddie's last name?

Answer: Ashton

Freddie is the innocent fellow Lu-Lu dupes into taking her out just so that she can ditch him later when they get down the street and take off with her forbidden, punk boyfriend Bo-Bo. Freddie introduces himself, first and last name, as soon as he walks in the door.

He and Francine then have a seat on the couch in the living room while they are waiting for Lu-Lu. Francine asks his last name again and he tells her again. She wants to make sure he is NO friend of Bo-Bo Belsinger's.
2. What is smell number four on the Odorama card?

Answer: Pizza

After Elmer cruelly leaves Francine for his sleazy secretary, he sends a pizza man to the house with several pizzas just to torment Francine. It is at this time when a "4" appears in the right bottom corner of the screen, indicating that pizza is the fourth smell on the Odorama card.

When "Polyester" first came out in theaters, moviegoers were given the Odorama cards. The purpose of it is explained in the very beginning of the movie. Throughout the movie, numbers appear on the screen. Whenever that happened during the original release of the film, people would scratch and sniff the corresponding number on their Odorama card and smell whatever smell was in the movie.

This was a gimmick that John Waters came up with as a homage to a big influence of his, director William Castle, who was known for using gimmicks in the theater to sell his movies.
3. How does Lu-Lu end up in the unwed mother's home?

Answer: The nuns come to her house and get her.

This is clear when they drive up to the Fishpaw house after Francine calls them. They run into the house, grab Lu-Lu and forcibly throw her in the trunk of their car! One of these nuns is played by Mary Vivian Pearce. She is a childhood friend of John's and has been in every single one of his movies, including his very first film he made as a teenager called "Hag in a Black Leather Jacket".
4. How does Bonkers, the family dog, commit suicide?

Answer: He hangs himself.

Poor Bonkers. After Lu-Lu comes home from the unwed mother's home and finds her boyfriend shot dead, she unsuccessfully attempts suicide by putting her head in the oven. Evidently, Bonkers the dog also decides to commit suicide at this time too and succeeds by hanging himself with a noose attached from the top of the refrigerator.

He even leaves a suicide note! Francine comes home to find this: Lu-Lu with her head in the oven, her mother La Rue shot in the leg and Bo-Bo dead in the living room. All of this is too much for poor Francine to take and she faints.
5. After Dexter gets out of prison and comes home, he encourages Francine to stop drinking and states he recently got off of a drug. What drug is it?

Answer: Angel dust

After Dexter and Lu-Lu become rehabilitated from their wild past ways, Francine still has some problems with alcoholism. Dexter and Francine are in the kitchen and he tells her to pour it down the drain. He then tells her that he was able to "get off the angel dust."
6. What does Todd Tomorrow's theater, the Edmondson Drive-In Cinema, serve at the snack bar?

Answer: Caviar, oysters, and champagne

After Francine falls for Todd, he tells her he owns the theater and takes her there. The movie screen advertises these luxurious concessions.
7. What is the Fishpaw's address?

Answer: 538 Wyman Way

This address is mentioned several times throughout the film. Examples include when Elmer advertises it while he's driving around the neighborhood with a speaker on top of his car; when Francine tells the pizza deliveryman that she didn't order pizza and he asks "This is 538 Wyman Way, isn't it?"; and when Todd calls a mental hospital at the end, he tells them the address. John Waters named this street after actress Jane Wyman. (You may recognize the incorrect answer "Calverton Court" from another one of John's movies, "Serial Mom".)
8. Where do Todd and Francine's mother, La Rue, want to move when they get Francine's money?

Answer: Miami

Towards the end of the movie, when they think they are finally rid of Francine and plan to take her money, Todd asks La Rue where she wants to move and she says "Miami". They then talk a little about how happy they will be there.
9. What is the name of the mental hospital Todd calls to come and get Francine, claiming she has had a breakdown and has committed a double homicide on Elmer and his girlfriend?

Answer: Happy Hills

You hear Todd ask "Happy Hills?" when he calls them and arranges for someone to come out and get Francine. Mother Shepherd's Flock is the name of the unwed mothers home that Lu-Lu is sent to earlier on in the movie.
10. When Todd and La Rue are plotting to move away with all of Francine's money at the end of the movie, she mentions she would like to get a car. What kind of car is it?

Answer: A purple Cadillac

La Rue states that she wants to get a face lift and a big purple Cadillac, so she can "ride around and laugh at all the poor people!" Both Todd and La Rue have themselves a big greedy laugh at this.
