Margaret Tate is a not-so-nice editor for a large book publishing company. Andrew Paxton is her overworked assistant. When Margaret learns that Bob did not do what she asked regarding their number one best-selling author, she fires him in front of the entire office floor.

This turns out to bite her back when Margaret needs to acquire a visa or face the threat of being deported. Bob leaks information to the immigration bureau of Margaret's scheme to marry Andrew so she can stay in the country.

While at the immigration office, Margaret convinces agent Gilbertson that she and Andrew have been secretly engaged by saying they were planning to tell Andrew's family that weekend at his parent's house, not knowing how far away it really is. Andrew goes along with the plan because he knows he will lose his job, and an opportunity of having his manuscript published, if Margaret is deported.

Before Margaret and Andrew can marry, they have to take a test on how well they know each other. On the way to Alaska, they look over the panel of questions they have to answer. Andrew claims to know everything about Margaret, since he is her assistant. When Margaret asks him what she is allergic to, he answers, "Pine nuts, and a full spectrum of human emotion".

Answer: A majority of the businesses in town are owned by Andrew's family.

For the first time, Margaret discovers her fake fiance comes from a very rich family. While at his homecoming party, Andrew announces to everyone that he and Margaret are getting married. Then, they tell a funny, made-up story about how he proposed.

Answer: He wants Andrew to take over the family business.

Because of Joe's lack of support for his son, Andrew has distanced himself from home and thrown himself into his work. Andrew has not returned home for three years.

We first see Ramone serving hors d'oeuvres at the Paxton's house for the party when Andrew and Margaret announce their engagement. He also does a most entertaining dance for Margaret at her bachelorette party, which he reprises while at work in the general store when she and Andrew are shopping the next day.

He also acts as the minister near the end of the film when Margaret and Andrew are at the altar.

It is a Paxton tradition to get married in the old family barn. At first, Margaret and Andrew are reluctant to wed then and there, but Andrew's grandma (Gammy) Annie threatens to die if they don't.

Answer: To not be sent to jail by stating that his engagement to Margaret is a fraud.

Andrew's dad Joe finds out about the true reason for their engagement and meets with Mr. Gilbertson to work out a deal on his son's behalf. When faced with the decision to either escape jail or remain true to Margaret, Andrew chooses to stick to the initial plan and marry Margaret anyway.

At the altar, Margaret decides to come clean and then turns herself in to Mr. Gilbertson. It is when she is on her way back to New York that Andrew realizes that he is in love with Margaret. Desperate to win her back, he follows her back to the city where he proposes to her for real.

Earlier in the film, Margaret tells Andrew that her first concert was Rob Bass and DJ EZ Rock. Andrew then begins to sing their most famous song in a high voice. This leads to the song playing at the end of the movie.
