Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This punk rock singer acted in three movies, 'Tapeheads', 'Terminal City Ricochet' and 'Highway '61'. He played an FBI agent, a policeman and a custom's agent respectively. These are quite strange choices for such an anti-authoritarian figure.

Answer: Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys)

Although his acting's OK, I'd much rather recommend the man's spoken word shows and cds. They're a real pleasure for anyone with a sense of humour and an inquisitive mind.
2. Which sullen rocker played a prisoner in 'Ghosts of the Civil Dead', a strange rocker in 'Johnny Suede' and himself in 'Der Himmel Über Berlin'?

Answer: Nick Cave (The Bad Seeds)

Nick Cave's finest moments on film are in a documentary about the recording of his album 'No More Shall We Part' (2001). In this film he wears a yellow cardigan, and his young son keeps saying 'Dad, I'm bored', while Cave tries to record 'God is in the House'. It's very funny - and he's not gonna tell you about the girl.
3. Which female singer played in a Lars Von Trier movie, but found the experience so gruelling and emotionally draining that she swore never to act again? She also wrote the soundtrack for that film, released those songs in a different form as her new record, and wore a dress in the shape of a swan to the Oscars' Ceremony.

Answer: Björk

The movie was 'Dancer in the Dark' (2000), a musical by Lars Von Trier, about a woman who loses her eyesight and tries to raise the money for the operation on her kid's eyes. The album was called 'Selmasongs' (2000). What happened to the dress ... no-one knows.
4. This rowdy, old, punk-rock singer has built himself a nice, little movie career. His speciality is playing cops. He was in 'The Chase', 'Heat', 'Johnny Mnemonic' and the very embarrassing 'Bad Boys II'.

Answer: Henry Rollins (Rollins Band)

Rollins used to be in Black Flag, purveyors of legendary hardcore punk. In 1987 he went solo and formed the Rollins Band, the personnel of which has changed a few times. Besides acting and screaming until his veins pop, Rollins is also a spoken word artist of considerable merit.

He also runs a publishing company, printing his own books of poetry and his journals, as well as lots of other people's books. He also co-runs a record company that re-releases missing classics. On top of that he works out a lot - busy guy.
5. This singer stuck out his tongue at Tom Cruise, and played a cowboy wearing a dress. He can also be seen in a wooden tub giving himself a good scrubbing, and he played an alien called Yelgrun in an episode of 'Star Trek - Deep Space Nine'. Who is he?

Answer: Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop played billiards against Tom Cruise in Martin Scorsese's 'The Color Of Money' (1986). In the end he lost, but still he was easily the best thing about the entire movie. He played a transvestite cowboy in Jim Jarmusch's 'Dead Man' (1995) and was seen taking a bath in John Waters' 'Cry-Baby' (1990).

The episode of 'Star Trek' he appeared in was called 'The Magnificent Ferengis' (episode 6.10). Mr. Pop's impressive torso also appeared in Alex Cox's 'Sid and Nancy' (1986), Jim Jarmusch's 'Coffee and Cigarettes' (1986, rereleased in 2003), 'Tank Girl' (1995), and 'The Crow II' (1996).
6. In 'Desperately Seeking Susan' Madonna wasn't the only singer/actor. He only appeared for a few seconds (lying naked on a bed and in a tiny flashback), but which legendary punk singer/poet played Madonna's ex-boyfriend?

Answer: Richard Hell (The Voidoids)

Hell was one of the pivotal members of the late 70's NY punk scene. He first played in Television with Tom Verlaine, then started The Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders, and finally his own band The Voidoids. These days he's mainly a writer. Other films he has appeared in were 'Blank Generation' (1979), 'Smithereens' (1982), 'Geek Maggot Bingo' (1983), 'What About Me' (1991), and 'Blind Light' (1998).
7. Who makes a bit of a fool out of himself, by claiming he's developed a very special pair of glasses, in the movie 'Blue in the Face' (1995)?

Answer: Lou Reed

Reed calls his special glasses 'Lou's Views'. 'Blue in the Face' was directed by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster. They had had so much fun while shooting the movie 'Smoke' (1995), that they kept some of the cast, reeled in some other celebrities (Michael J. Fox, Madonna, and RuPaul, to name a few) and improvised a sort of sequel. Lou Reed has also appeared in movies like 'One Trick Pony' (1980), 'Get Crazy' (1983), 'Faraway, So Close' (1993) and 'Prozac Nation' (2001).
8. 'I Shot Andy Warhol' (1996) told the story of writer Valerie Solanas and her not so positive experience with Warhol's Factory. It goes without saying that the band The Velvet Underground appeared in this movie. It was not the actual band though. What band, that was highly influenced by the Velvet Underground, saw their dream come true when they followed in the footsteps of their big idols and actually portrayed the Velvet Underground, playing at a party in the Factory?

Answer: Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo is a three-piece band from Hoboken, New York. The members are Ira Kaplan (vocals/guitar), Georgia Hubley (vocals/drums) and James McNew (bass). They haven't appeared in any other movies, but their music can be heard on the soundtrack to 'The Book Of Life' (1998) and 'Milk & Honey' (2003).
9. Who played a scruffy butler in a Mexican village and appeared singing a duet with Burt Bacharach? He also made a quick appearance in 'Spice World'. No, it's not Gary Glitter.

Answer: Elvis Costello

Costello played a butler in Alex Cox's 'Straight to Hell' (1987), which also featured The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Courtney Love, Edward Tudor-Pole and Grace Jones. He sang with Bacharach in 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me' (1999). The same year he also made an appearance in '200 Cigarettes', again featuring Courtney Love.

He also appeared in the 2004 production 'De-Lovely' with Mick Hucknall, Alanis Morrissette and Sheryl Crow. Gary Glitter's part was cut out of 'Spice World' (1998) at the last moment.
10. This singer/guitar player's first film was a strange mixture of Sci-Fi and documentary, directed by himself in 1972. He also appeared in the Band's farewell concert film 'The Last Waltz' (1978). In 1989 the grizzled, old rocker played the abusive boyfriend of Anne Archer in 'Love at Large', and in 1997 Jim Jarmusch made a documentary about him and his band called 'The Year of The Horse'.

Answer: Neil Young

The 1972 movie was called 'Journey Through The Past'. 'The Last Waltz' was directed by Martin Scorsese. 'Love at Large' was directed by Alan Rudolph and also featured Meat Loaf in a small role. Rudolph and Loaf had previously worked together on 'Roadie' (1980). The Jarmusch documentary took its name from Neil Young's band, Crazy Horse.
11. This singer made small appearances in Roman Polanski's 'Pirates' (1986), 'Judge Dredd' (1995) and 'The Crow II' (1996). In 1997 he starred in 'Middleton's Changeling', a prestigious British costume drama which took seven years to film. But his moment-de-gloire came when he played a roadie who wakes up Bob Dylan in 'Hearts Of Fire' (1987).

Answer: Ian Dury

Ian Dury was better known for his work on British television. Among others, he wrote the title tune for the series 'The Secret Diaries of Adrien Mole', based on the book by Sue Townsend. 'Hearts of Fire' was a disastrous morality tale about the music business, starring Dylan and Rupert Everett.
12. Who played a drunk limo driver and an ally to Count Dracula? He was also a mad inventor, a policeman, a bum and an escaped convict. He also has a very distinctive voice.

Answer: Tom Waits

Tom Waits drove a limo through Robert Altman's 'Short Cuts' (1993), and played Renfield in Coppola's 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' (1992). He was an inventor in 'Mystery Men' (1999), a cop in Jack Nicholson's 'The Two Jakes' (1990), a bum in Hector Babenco's 'Ironweed' (1987) and a convict on the run in Jim Jarmusch's 'Down By Law' (1986).

He also appeared in Stallone's 'Paradise Alley' (1978) and in 'Wolfen' (1981). He worked a few more times with Coppola in, 'The Outsiders', 'Rumble Fish' (both 1983) and 'The Cotton Club' (1984).

He appeared in Jarmusch's 'Coffee and Cigarettes' (1986 & 2003), in 'Cold Feet' (1989), in 'Queens Logic' (1991), in Terry Gilliam's 'The Fisher King' (1991) and in Babenco's 'At Play in the Fields of the Lord' (1991). As far as his distinctive voice goes, Waits has won two lawsuits against companies who used an impersonator of him in radio commercials.
13. What 60's legend appeared as 'the father' in the musical 'Absolute Beginners'? His wife is cheating on him with numerous young tenants, while he sings about wanting 'a quiet life'.

Answer: Ray Davies

Davies still occasionally fronts The Kinks. In Julien Temple's 'Absolute Beginners' (1986) he appeared alongside David Bowie, Patsy Kensit, Eddie Tudor-Pole, Sade Adu, Sandie Shaw and Slim Gaillard.
14. What famous punk rock star was captured and tortured by cop Harvey Keitel? The movie in question was Italian, released in 1983, and titled 'Copkiller', though it's also known as 'Cop Killers' and 'Order Of Death'. The third title is also a song on an album by the singer, which was released in 1984.

Answer: John Lydon (Sex Pistols)

John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, used to be in The Sex Pistols and in Public Image Limited. The song 'The Order Of Death' appears on the album 'This Is What You Want ... This Is What You Get'. Lydon also appeared in 'The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle' (1980), Julien Temple's brilliantly messy semi-documentary about the Sex Pistols.

This film however only reflected manager Malcolm McLaren's version of events. In 2000 Temple made another film about the Sex Pistols. This time it was a proper documentary, with interviews with Lydon, Steve Jones and Paul Cook.

It also featured some fascinating old footage of Sid Vicious. This film was called 'The Filth and the Fury'- check it out. Lydon even starts crying a bit when he talks about Vicious' death, which is very moving. Anyway, it's better than his appearance on the television program 'I'm A Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here!'.
15. And finally, who made his acting debut in the British gangster flick 'Face', released in 1997, and starring Robert Carlyle and Ray Winstone?

Answer: Damon Albarn (Blur)

The incredibly hammy Albarn luckily hasn't made any movies since. I also sincerely hope singers like Mick Jagger, Alanis Morrissette, Cyndi Lauper, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Jewel, Roger Daltrey, Sting, Jennifer Lopez and their ilk learn their lesson and STOP ACTING! Please.
