Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz" the role of the Tin Woodsman was played by Jack Haley. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: He was in several "Davy Crockett" movies and the American TV series "The Beverly Hillbillies.")

Answer: Buddy Ebsen

Buddy Ebsen was originally cast as the Scarecrow, but switched roles with Ray Bolger (who wanted to switch because his childhood idol Fred Stone had played the Scarecrow) and prepared to play the Tin Woodsman. But he apparently had an allergic reaction to the aluminum powder makeup used for the Tin Man and had to leave the picture. Jack Haley was then selected to play the Tin Woodsman's role.

The makeup was changed to a paste so that he did not inhale the aluminum as much.
2. In the 1961 movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" the role of high-priced escort Holly Golighty was played by Audrey Hepburn. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: She was in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.")

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was originally cast as Holly Golighty, but at the time she was trying to change her image from sexpot to serious actress. Her drama coach at the famed New York's Actors Studio (Lee Strasberg) convinced her that playing a call girl would not be good for her new image.
3. In the 1959 movie "Ben-Hur" the role of Judah Ben-Hur was played by Charlton Heston. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: He was in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.")

Answer: Paul Newman

Paul Newman was offered the role of Judah Ben-Hur but turned it down because he said he didn't have the legs to wear a tunic. "Ben-Hur" won 11 Oscars in the 1960 Academy Awards.
4. In the 1939 movie "Gone with the Wind" the role of Rhett Butler was played by Clark Gable. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: He was in "High Noon.")

Answer: Gary Cooper

Gary Cooper screen tested for and was offered the role of Rhett Butler, but producer Sam Goldwyn (who held Cooper's contract) adamantly refused to loan him to GWTW producer David O. Selznick for this project. Other actors considered for the role of Rhett included Errol Flynn, Ronald Coleman, Warner Baxter, Fredric March and Basil Rathbone. 1,400 actresses were interviewed for the part of Scarlett O'Hara and 400 were asked to do readings.
5. In the 1984 movie "Ghostbusters" the role of Dr. Peter Venkman was played by Bill Murray. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: He was in "Animal House.")

Answer: John Belushi

John Belushi was originally slated to play Dr. Peter Venkman in "Ghostbusters," but after his sudden death in 1982 Bill Murray was cast, and the role was extensively rewritten.
6. In the 1954 movie "On the Waterfront" the role of ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman, Terry Malloy, was played by Marlon Brando. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: He was in "Man with the Golden Arm.")

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra was considered for the role of Terry Malloy by the movie's director (Elia Kazan), but producer Sam Spiegel favored Brando for his presumed greater pulling power at the box office. Actress (and future Monaco first lady) Grace Kelly turned down the role of Edie Doyle (played by Eva Marie Saint), deciding to make the movie "Rear Window" instead.
7. In the 1967 movie "Bonnie and Clyde" the role of Bonnie Parker was played by Faye Dunaway. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: She was in "The Electric Horseman.")

Answer: Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda turned down the role of Bonnie Parker because she was living in France at the time, and did not want to move to the U.S. during the filming.
8. In the 1991 movie "Silence of the Lambs" the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter was played by Anthony Hopkins. Which of these Hollywood figures was also considered for the role? (Hint: He was in "Manhunter," "Braveheart," "Adaptation" and "The Bourne Identity.")

Answer: Brian Cox

Brian Cox played Dr. Hannibal Lecktor in the 1986 movie "Manhunter," which was an earlier movie about the doctor, and he was originally offered the same part in "Silence of the Lambs." (Note: in "Manhunter" the doctor's name was spelled "Lecktor," but in later movies the spelling was changed to "Lecter.") Gene Hackman, Jeremy Irons and Robert Duvall were all also considered for the role of Hannibal Lecter.

Answer: Viggo Mortensen

Viggo Mortensen was originally cast to play Lt. John Dunbar. He is perhaps best known to many movie buffs for playing Aragorn in all three "Lord of the Rings" movies. Ironically, Mortensen almost didn't have that role. Stuart Townsend was originally cast as Aragorn, but was felt to be too young (age 23) and was replaced by Mortensen after four days of shooting.
