Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boy fishing on the moon
Answer: DreamWorks
Founded by Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks is a film company whose parent company is Amblin Partners. DreamWorks began in 1994 and, until August 2016, their films were marketed and produced by Touchstone Pictures. DreamWorks Animation SKG has produced films which include: "Shrek", "Shark Tale", "Madagascar" and "Kung Fu Panda".
2. A castle
Answer: Walt Disney Pictures
Walt Disney Pictures' predecessor was Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, founded by filmmaker Walt Disney and his brother Roy in 1923. In 1983 Walt Disney Pictures was incorporated and, in 1985, with the release of the movie "The Black Cauldron", the fantasy castle became the official logo. Other Disney pictures include "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and 'The Lion King" in 1994.
3. A lighthouse
Answer: Castle Rock
Castle Rock Entertainment is a subsidiary of Time Warner. It was founded in 1987 by director Rob Reiner, Martin Shafer, Glenn Padnick, et al. Reiner named the company in honor of the fictional Maine setting for many of Stephen King's stories, which in turn was based on a place on the island of "Lord of the Flies".
They are responsible for the production of such wonderful films as "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) and "The Green Mile" (1999).
4. A woman on a pedestal holding a torch
Answer: Columbia
The woman in the white dress with the blue shawl standing on a pedestal has been the symbol of Columbia Pictures since January 10, 1924. Columbia was founded by Harry Cohn, Jack Cohn and Joe Brandt, and is a division of Sony Entertainment. With releases dating back to the 1920s, Columbia has a very long list of productions, including "Dr Strangelove..." (1964), "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979), "Ghostbusters" (1984) and "Charlie's Angels" (2000).
5. A mountain surrounded by stars
Answer: Paramount
The oldest surviving Hollywood film logo belongs to Paramount Pictures. The mountain was originally surrounded by 24 stars which represented the number of contract players; it was subsequently reduced to 22 stars, but I was unable to find the reason. Paramount, originally called Famous Players - Lasky Corporation, is also America's oldest running studio, having been founded in 1912. In 2010, the byline 'A Viacom Company" was added below the mountain.
The 1997 blockbuster "Titanic" was a Paramount film.
6. A spinning world
Answer: Universal
That well-spinning globe is the logo for Universal Pictures which is a subsidiary of Comcast (which can be seen in small letters beneath the world). Universal was founded by Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass and a host of others in 1912, under the name Universal Film Manufacturing Company.
Some of the films produced by Universal are: "Gladiator" (2000). "Jurassic Park" (1993) "ET: The Extra Terrestrial" (1982) and "Jaws" (1975).
7. A lion
Answer: MGM
MGM or Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has perhaps one of the most famous logos, i.e., Leo the roaring lion, beneath the words "Ars Gratia Artis", a Latin phrase translated as 'Art for Art's sake'. The company was founded by Louis B. Mayer and Marcus Lowe (who apparently got no billing) on April 17, 1924. MGM's first 'talkie' was the musical "The Broadway Melody" in 1929, which garnered an Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year.
8. A cut of film
Answer: New Line Cinema
Can you picture the black cut of film surrounded by blue light? That is the logo for New Line Cinema founded in New York City in 1967 by Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne. New Line was originally a subsidiary of Turner Broadcasting, then Time Warner in 1996, then merged with Warner Bros. in 2008. Films under the banner of New Line Entertainment include "The Lord of the Rings" franchise, "Hairspray" (the 2007 version) and "Straight Outta Compton".
9. A desk lamp in place of the 'I'
Answer: Pixar
I love the Pixar logo where the hopping desk lamp (named Luxo Jr.) replaces the "I" in Pixar by pounding it out of sight. This logo first appeared at the end of the movie "Toy Story", and debuted at the beginning of "A Bug's Life". That kind of creativity seems to extend to the kind of pictures they produce. Pixar was founded in 1986 and is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.
10. Pegasus
Answer: Tristar
The beautiful winged horse from Greek mythology, Pegasus, is the symbol for Tristar Pictures. Tristar is a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Victor Kaufman, formerly a senior executive of Columbia Pictures, founded Tristar (originally Tri-Star until 1991) in 1982.
A partial list of Tristar pictures includes "The Natural" and "Places in the Heart", both in 1984, and "Peggy Sue Got Married" (1986).
