The Wrong Place: The Geography of Film Locations Quiz

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This educational location in the UK has been used in a number of films, including "Les Miserables "(2012), "Thor: The Dark World" (2013) and "Cruella" (2021) to name a few. Where were they filmed?

Answer: Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

The Royal Naval College in Greenwich was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and is situated on the banks of the Thames. The pillars and steps of the college can be seen in Lamarque's funeral scene of "Les Miserables" substituting for Paris in the film. The final battle between Thor and the Dark Elves takes place in the courtyard of the college.

In the film "Cruella", Estella is going to the fountain in Regents Park in London, but the fountain is really located in the Old Naval College.
2. A stunning façade built into the pink-red rock face of a canyon has featured in many films, including the location of the Holy Grail in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". In which country is Al-Khazneh, Petra situated?

Answer: Jordan

A 2000-year-old monument carved into a sandstone rockface is visually impressive. Al-Khazneh translates to 'The Treasury' and is a temple in Jordan. It is believed to be a king's mausoleum. "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" finishes with Indiana, Henry, his father, Sallah, and Marcus riding horses away from the site. "The Mummy Returns" (2001) and "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) were also filmed in the area.
3. Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine in "Star Wars, A New Hope" (1977) obviously doesn't exist on Earth. Luke's Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru lived in a house that is really an unusual building in the village of Matamata in which country?

Answer: Tunisia

The Berber village of Matamata is where Luke's childhood home, also known as the Hotel Sidi Driss, is located. It is an underground maze of tunnels, still in use as a hotel, which is popular for 'Star Wars' fandom visits. I'm not sure if they serve blue milk. Director George Lucas also used other Tunisian locations to bring Tatooine to life, including an area called Tataouine.
4. Marvel's "Black Panther" (2018), starring the late Chadwick Boseman, had an exciting car chase which was filmed in which South Korean city?

Answer: Busan

The chase required 150 cars and involved over 700 people. In it the car is being driven using virtual reality technology by T'Challa's sister, Suri, remotely from Wakanda. Seoul is a much more usual filming location than Busan, which is the second largest city in South Korea.
5. The war film "1917" (2019) was set in the battlefields of Normandy, where two soldiers were sent to deliver messages to call off an ill-advised attack. Which location in the UK, more famous for an ancient monument, was used to replace the fields of France?

Answer: Salisbury Plain

The film follows two soldiers as they travel to deliver a message to call off an attack that would put the lives of 1,600 men in jeopardy, including a brother of one of the soldiers. The movie was filmed in a way to indicate it was in continuous real time, so as the soldiers travelled so did you, following their every move. Salisbury Plain was transformed into a warzone, complete with trenches that were dug to a specific length in order to comply with the real time requirements of filming.

They obviously had to keep Stonehenge out of shot.
6. "Joker" (2019) was a hugely successful film starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. Set in the fictional city of Gotham, which New York borough is the location of the scene where the newly defined Joker performs an iconic dance on a set of stairs?

Answer: The Bronx

The Joker puts on his signature make-up and dons his trademark suit, he then dances his way down the steps of Gotham City, except these are actually located in Highbridge, The Bronx, in New York City. The step street connects Shakespeare Avenue with Anderson Avenue at West 167th Street. Due to the popularity of the film, these steps have become known colloquially as the 'Joker Stairs' and fans congregate to take their turn at performing on them.
7. The beginning of the film "Dune" (2021) is set on the Atreides home planet of Caladan. What Nordic country was used as the location for this lush watery planet?

Answer: Norway

Most of "Dune" is set on the desert planet Arrakis, and this was filmed primarily in the Rub' Al Khali desert in Abu Dhabi. Against this desolate sandy environment, the Scandinavian forests and fjords of Standladnet in Norway gave a beautiful verdant contrast to show what the Duke and his family left behind. Standladnet is a peninsula on the northwestern part of Norway.
8. Martha's Vineyard was deemed to be the perfect place to stand in for a town in need of a bigger boat, a shark nicknamed Bruce, and a sheriff called Brody in which 1975 film?

Answer: Jaws

Stephen Spielberg's film "Jaws" (1975) was based on a book by Peter Benchley. In Benchley's book, Amity was situated off Long Island, New York. Spielberg wanted Amity to have a smaller resort feel, so that people got a sense of the problem that having a rogue shark eating your visitors and therefore destroying your livelihood could cause. So he moved the action to Massachusetts, specifically Martha's Vineyard, an area where tourism and holiday making are more apparent.
9. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) wasn't filmed in Budapest, nor was it filmed in a hotel! What type of establishment was used as the primary setting for this movie?

Answer: Department store

The beautiful art nouveau styling of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" really belongs to a department store in Goerlitz, Germany. The comedy-drama starring Ralph Fiennes and directed by Wes Anderson follows the convoluted story of the hotel's concierge and bellboy as they attempt to benefit from an old wealthy client's will.

The town of Goerlitz was also used as a location for Quentin Tarantino's movie "Inglourious Basterds".
10. The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy (2001-2003) was filmed entirely in New Zealand.

Answer: True

Director Peter Jackson felt that Middle Earth was best served by the rugged countryside available in both the North and South Islands. There are over 150 film locations around the two islands including Hobbiton in Matamata, which was not dismantled after filming and became a museum of the movies. Mount Doom in Mordor was filmed at Mount Ngauruhoe in Tongariro National Park. Minas Tirith was inspired by Mont Saint-Michel in France and sections were built and filmed at Dry Creek Quarry in Wellington as well as a smaller replica.
