Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Heartbreak Kid
Answer: Charles Grodin
Grodin starred in the original (1972) version of this film. He played self-absorbed Lennie Cantrow, who was having second thoughts about marriage... just days after his wedding. Co-stars Eddie Albert and Jeannie Berlin were both nominated for Academy Awards for this film.
2. Charlie Chan In London
Answer: Warner Oland
Charlie Chan was a fictional Chinese-American police detective. Sweden-born Oland portrayed Charlie in 17 films (1931-1937). When Oland died the series continued with Sidney Toler; Toler starred as Charlie in 22 films.
3. Monte Walsh
Answer: Lee Marvin
In this western Marvin plays an aging cowboy witnessing the end of an era. Barbed wire and the railroads have rendered "the range riders" obsolete. Costarring in this highly regarded 1970 film are Jeanne Moreau and Jack Palance.
4. The Cincinnati Kid
Answer: Steve McQueen
In this 1965 film, Steve McQueen plays a traveling poker player about to take on a renowned card sharp (played by Edward G. Robinson). The film is set in 1930s' New Orleans. The movie director named Steve McQueen is not the same guy.
5. Last Chance Harvey
Answer: Dustin Hoffman
In this 2008 film Hoffman plays a man who is unhappy with his job...and his life. Then he meets Kate Walker (played by Emma Thompson) and everything changes. This very predictable film was a far cry from his roles in "The Graduate" "Midnight Cowboy" "Rainman" and his many classic other films.
6. Mr. Wong, Detective
Answer: Boris Karloff
Karloff portrayed Mr. Wong (Chinese-American detective) in five films (1938-1940). He was already famous for his roles in "Frankenstein" and "The Mummy" when the series began. In between the five "Mr. Wong" films the studio used him in five other films including the creepy "The Tower of London" and "The Bride Of Frankenstein." They certainly got their money's worth.
7. The Luck of Ginger Coffey
Answer: Robert Shaw
Shaw played Ginger Coffey in this excellent low-key 1964 drama. Ginger's luck is mostly bad as he has to deal with no job, marital woes, and other setbacks. The woman portraying his wife (Mary Ure) was, in fact, married to him in "real life."
8. The Man From the Diners' Club
Answer: Danny Kaye
Danny played a salesman who inadvertently signed up a notorious gangster as a member. Formed in 1950, "The Diners' Club" was the first multipurpose credit card. The 1963 film was Danny's last lead in a theatrical movie.
9. Mysterious Mr. Moto
Answer: Peter Lorre
In this film Lorre plays another of the "Charlie Chan" wannabees. Hungarian-born Lorre played this Asian detective in nine films (1937-1939). He appeared in classic films such as "The Maltese Falcon", "Casablanca" and "My Favorite Brunette" as well as dozens of television shows.
10. Big Jim McLain
Answer: John Wayne
John Wayne and James Arness played government agents trying to break up a ring of communists in Hawaii. When Arness landed the role of Matt Dillon in "Gunsmoke" Wayne filmed an introduction for the first episode.
