Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As Hawkeye he wears moccasins, uses wampum and a gun (1992)

Answer: Daniel Day-Lewis

The 1992 film was just one of many adaptations of the novel by James Fenimore Cooper. Set in the 1750s, during the French and Indian War, Daniel Day-Lewis played Hawkeye, a white man who had been raised a a Mohican Indian. His 'adoptive' brother, Uncas, dies at the end of the film and is dubbed 'The Last of the Mohicans'.

Daniel Day-Lewis's filmography is shorter than most, as he has always been selective with the roles he takes. This hasn't stopped him winning three Best Actor Oscars, for 'My Left Foot' (1989), 'There Will be Blood' (2007) and 'Lincoln' (2012).
2. Taylor discovers only a vestige remains of New York in the first film of a franchise (1968)

Answer: Charlton Heston

Another film to be based on a novel, written by the French author Pierre Boulle, 'The Planet of the Apes' stars Charlton Heston as George Taylor. Having been travelling through space in suspended animation, Taylor and his two surviving crew members find themselves in the year 3978 on a planet ruled by apes. The film ends withe Taylor finding the Statue of Liberty and realising the planet is Earth.

Charlton Heston appeared in his first film in 1941, portrayed Moses in 'The Ten Commandments' (1956) and 'El Cid' in 1961. His final appearances on screen were in the early 2000s, and he died in 2008.
3. In just one of his typical iconic roles, he portrayed Davy Crockett (1960)

Answer: John Wayne

John Wayne starred in numerous Western films, with 'The Alamo' being among the best known. Set in 1836, the film depicts the siege of the mission called the Alamo by the Mexican army. Davy Crockett (Wayne) and Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) were just two of the American heroes who died at this iconic site.

To list all Wayne's films would take far too much time for me to write and for you to read, but his first was in 1926 and his final one came out in 1993. He won his only Oscar for the 1969 film 'True Grit'.
4. Did the sand drive him wild catching Turks (1962)

Answer: Peter O'Toole

The film is centred on Thomas Edward Lawrence, better known as 'Lawrence of Arabia', and is set during World War I. Peter O'Toole plays the title role with Alec Guinness as Prince Faisal, king of the country now called Syria. The cast includes many well known actors, including Omar Sharif, Anthony Quinn and Anthony Quayle. It won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director in 1963, although O'Toole lost out to Gregory Peck for the Best Actor award.

O'Toole's first film was in 1960, so 'Lawrence of Arabia' came very early in his career. He went on to play King Henry II in two films, 'Becket' in 1964, and 'The Lion in Winter' in 1968.
5. Appeared in 'Tai-Pan' the Rafaella de Laurentis production (1986)

Answer: Bryan Brown

The film takes its title from the novel by James Clavell, set in China. Bryan Brown plays Dirk Struan, owner of a trading company in Hong Kong. Tai-pan translates as 'top class', but Clavell, and the film, use the term to mean 'supreme' leader'. The plot involves Struan's fight to remain the 'top dog' while fighting off a rival's attempts to usurp his position.

Bryan Brown is an Australian actor, who has had much success on the big screen. His other films include 'Breaker Morant' (1980) and 'Blame it on the Bellboy' with Dudley Moore in 1992.
6. In this Farrelly Brothers film, the main character learns wiser values and not to judge by appearances (2001)

Answer: Jack Black

The film is, of course, 'Shallow Hal'. Jack Black plays Hal Larson, who judges women only by their looks. Having been hypnotised to see only inner beauty, he falls in love with Rosemary, an extremely overweight woman, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Hal sees her as the beautiful woman Paltrow actually is, until the hypnotic spell is broken.

Jack Black's first screen appearance was in a television advertisement, and he has gone on to establish himself on the big screen. He has appeared in 'High Fidelity' (2000), 'School of Rock' (2003) and 'Bernie' (2011).
7. This man with no name could brag dollars motivated him (1964)

Answer: Clint Eastwood

The first of Clint Eastwood's starring roles, 'A Fistful of Dollars' was directed by Sergio Leone, being dubbed a 'spaghetti western'. It is also the first of a trilogy with 'For a Few Dollars More' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' coming out in 1965 and 1966 respectively. Set on the border between the USA and Mexico, Eastwood's character is known as 'The Stranger' during the film, although 'The Man With no Name' is how most of us probably think of him.

Clint Eastwood's career included acting and directing, with the first appearance many of us can remember being on television, playing Rowdy Yates in 'Rawhide' from 1959. His films include 'Play Misty for Me' (1971) and 'Heartbreak Ridge' (1986).
8. A poor Indian doctor spurns an heiress with millions of pounds (1960)

Answer: Peter Sellers

The play on which the film was, loosely, based was written by George Bernard Shaw and also called 'The Millionairess'. Sophia Loren plays the rich heiress of the title, whose inheritance comes with strings attached when it comes to the man she wishes to marry. Sellers, as an altruistic doctor, is uninterested in her wealth or meeting the requirements. As this is what is now called a 'rom-com' all ends well.

Peter Sellers is well known as a member of the comedy group The Goons, but also has a string of film credits to his name. He was Inspector Clouseau in many of the 'Pink Panther' films and also appeared in 'Doctor Strangelove' in 1964.
9. Fiona Fullerton played a lissom Alice in this musical, with this White Rabbit (1972)

Answer: Michael Crawford

This British version of Lewis Carroll's famous book was called 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', and is just one of numerous adaptations of the story. It is more unusual in being a musical, with lyrics by Don Black set to music by John Barry. As well as Fiona and Michael, the film also starred Michael Hordern as the Mock Turtle, Spike Milligan as the Gryphon and Flora Robson as the Queen of Hearts.

Michael Crawford appeared in 'Hello Dolly!' (1969) and 'Barnum' (1986) and also played the Phantom on stage in 'The Phantom of the Opera'.
10. Percy pounces on Mr Jingles, but Paul Edgecomb saw the truth (1999)

Answer: Tom Hanks

'The Green Mile' was directed by Frank Darabont and was adapted from Stephen King's novel, published three years earlier. Set in a prison, on Death Row, Paul Edgecomb (Hanks) is a prison officer who comes to realise that one of his charges, John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) has supernatural powers. These include resurrecting a pet mouse, Mr Jingles, who has been killed by the sadistic Percy (Doug Hutchison).

Tom Hanks seems to have been a permanent fixture on our screens for years, with roles such as 'Forrest Gump' (1994), 'Sully' (2016) and the voice of Woody in the various 'Toy Story' films.
