It'sad but true. When Sophie has trouble coming up with lyrics for the song, she suggests a walk. While they are talking, Alex tells her that he dealt with Colin leaving the band by taking drugs, alcohol and ultimately recording his own solo album. He takes her to the music store and holds up the copy of his CD.
Alex originally made a mark on the back of the CD himself, and has been checking every week since. It's still there.
After telling Sophie about the comments Rolling Stone magazine made about his album, she says 'Well I'm sure there were other reviews.'

It sounds whiffy to me. At the beginning of the movie two producers are selling a show about has-beens (titled 'Battle of the 80s' Has-Beens') to Alex, hoping to get him to appear. The trailer starts with a blurb about the band. 'PoP was one of the biggest bands of the '80s, but today they're known as Colin Thompson's old group. Colin, or as he's been dubbed by the Queen, "Sir Colin", has gone on to sell millions of records, star in blockbuster films and create his own cologne, "A Whiff of Colin".

But here's a question: Can you remember the name of the other guy in PoP?' They are of course, talking about Alex Fletcher.

After selling their song to Cora Corman, Sophie locks herself in the bathroom when she sees Sloan Cates at the restaurant they're in. Alex convinces her that the time is right to confront Cates about his best-seller, but Sophie starts to panic. 'I think I'm developing a sudden coronary blockage.' Alex: 'Those pass very quickly, okay?'
Sophie: 'Shortness of breath. Blurred vision.'
Alex: 'You're fine.'
Sophie: 'Scurvy?'
She thinks her throat is closing with an anaphylactic reaction when Alex puts a microphone in front of her so they can record the vocal track of their song.
