Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A woman is employed to navigate the mind of an incapacitated killer, whose latest victim is trapped away beneath ground. In order to discover where the victim is located, the woman must remain focused as she enters the vivid, morbid, and disturbed world that exists within his brain. What movie is this?

Answer: The Cell

I love this movie because the imagery is colorful, and weird. Jennifer Lopez is the star of this movie and she does a great job of evoking a gentle and calm demeanor to her character, who has to go against a violent, angry, and psychotic man played by Vincent D' Onofrio.
2. A lesbian works relentlessly to spread her personal beliefs regarding the issues of feminism to the public. She momentarily finds refuge within a famous artist's circle, but after getting exiled from the group, she becomes a bit chaotic and demonstrates the title of the movie. What is this title?

Answer: I Shot Andy Warhol

Based on a true story, Valerie Solanas believed that men were mentally and genetically inferior to women, and wrote the 'SCUM Manifesto' to deliver this message to the population of women. She became friends with Andy Warhol during this time, and even frequented The Factory, but eventually Andy and his friends found her weird and obnoxious.

As Solanas became more and more frustrated, she went a bit mad, and shot Andy Warhol in revenge for his dismissal of their friendship. She was mostly mad that he didn't help her spread the message of the 'SCUM Manifesto'.
3. An 80's New York artists navigates his way from the streets to the galleries of the city, in order to find fame and fortune. Within the process he becomes a drug addict, a womanizer, and the face of art commodified. What is the name of this film, named after the artist?

Answer: Basquiat

Jean Michel-Basquiat is my favorite artist, and 'Basquiat' does a pretty good job of detailing the artist's life. Unfortunately, it leaves out a huge aspect of his life, which was that he was a bi-sexual and had many relationships with both men and women.

But nonetheless it documents a vivid picture of the self-destructive lifestyle Basquiat engaged in, including his extensive drug use, which actor Jeffrey Wright depicts exceptionally.
4. Two friends and a woman travel to a lesser known Mexican beach, during the summer, via a road trip. While the two friends seek to find adventure during what could become a lame summer vacation, the woman seeks to live her last bit of life freely, as she has recently discovered she is dying. The trip leads to many sexual exploits, and by the end of the film, the three engage each other in ways they could have never imagined. Ironically, what is the title of this movie?

Answer: Y Tu Mama Tambien

This is a great movie about sexual freedom starring one of my favorite actors Gael Garcia Bernal. I love how the title reveals itself as the two friends Tenoch and Julio rant off who they've had sex with, after revealing that each other has slept with ther others' girlfriends at one point. Eventually, during a drunken rant revealing all, Julio confesses that he has slept with Tenoch's mother also, thus "Y Tu Mama Tambien".
5. An inventor finds himself between the worlds of reality and dream, as he begins a new romance with his neighbor. Stuck in a life where he's required to become an adult, his new friend allows him to forget the real world and engage his dream world. Which movie is this?

Answer: Science of Sleep

Another Gael Garcia Bernal film, this movie is so sweet because it's about love, growing up, and facing reality, which his character has a hard time doing. This movie is funny, and sort of juvenile, but it definitely forces you to encounter your dreamlike sensibility.
6. A girl leads a straight life but is actually gay, and although she hasn't realized it yet, everyone else has. Her parents send her away to a place that turns gay people straight, but she fails to transform, as she falls in love with one of her fellow housemates. Can you name this funny film?

Answer: But I'm A Cheerleader

This movie is about identity, sexuality, and love, and it presents all these subjects while being very funny. I especially love this movie because of the ironic title, "But I'm A Cheerleader", as though Natasha Lyonne's character couldn't be gay because of that fact.
7. After coming to grips with a tragedy involving her son, a mother is suddenly forced to deal with friends and family who are trying to convince her she never had a son at all. Memories, photos, and any trace of his existence seem to disappear, but as she fights to prove them wrong, she realizes powerful forces are involved in ways she could have never imagined. Which film is this?

Answer: The Forgotten

I love science fiction movies, and 'The Forgotten' starts out like a drama, but turns into a action filled sci-fi flick that has you wondering what will happen next. The movie stars Julianne Moore as a mother who refuses to let go of her, supposedly dead, son, while everyone from her husband and neighbors, to her psychologist believe that the boy never existed.

The movie gets interesting as she begins to investigate the tragedy involving her son herself, and find out things that seem impossible.
8. A man longs for companionship, but rather than court the woman he finds attractive at his job, he orders a life size doll and presents her as his girlfriend. As a result, he spends months engaging in a relationship with the fictitious being, while people in his community cater to his dilemma. Eventually he finds a way to end the doll's life, and advance the woman he finds attractive. What is this movie called?

Answer: Lars and the Real Girl

'Lars and the Real Girl' is so sweet and funny. Ryan Gosling's character, Lars, is a quirky guy who just needs time to understand what he wants and who he is. It's interesting how everyone he knows suddenly caters to his fake girlfriend. Nevertheless, it's the town's investment in Lars' fake relationship that helps him overcome his issues, and makes the movie especially good.
9. A group of friends navigate through the trials of hetero and homosexual relationships, drugs, being poor, creating art and music, and HIV/AIDS. Through their trials, they experience love, heartbreak, and death, but overall they learn that life is better lived for the moment they're in. Do you know the name of this film?

Answer: Rent

'Rent' is a musical that makes me laugh, cry, sing, and become inspired. It's about accepting yourself for who you are, and loving yourself and your life for what it is. It's also about not judging others and conquering the idea that in order to be happy, you have to conform to the ways of society. Love is the overall theme of this great musical.
10. A young Latina living in Los Angeles tries to overcome the pressures brought on by her family, particularly her mother and sister, to lead the life of a seamstress, live at home, and contribute to the house financially. As a result, she must convince them that she has what it takes to go to college, be successful, and fulfill her American dream. What is the title of this movie?

Answer: Real Women Have Curves

'Real Women Have Curves' is a great movie because it presents the traditional family lifestyle that exists for many Mexican Americans. As family is very important for the culture, America Ferrera's character is challenged because her parents and siblings want her to remain traditional, while she wants to prove to them that she can break free from tradition, and conquer her own dreams.
