Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You're free to leave me, but just don't deceive me, And please believe me when I say I love you". This musical tells the tale of Satine and Christian, who promise to love each other no matter what. What is the name of this musical?

Answer: Moulin Rouge

"Moulin Rouge" was directed by Baz Luhrmann. This song is called "El Tango De Roxanne" and it tells the story of a prostitute. It is sung by the Argentinian and Christian, just after Satine goes to the Duke to try to save the Moulin Rouge. (The Duke is paying a lot of money for the Moulin Rouge club to become a theatre and he wants the lead actress, Satine, for himself).

The "Red Windmill" is not actually a real musical but is what "Moulin Rouge" translates as. In this line Christian is saying that Satine can become the Duke's lover but he is asking her not to lie to him.

He is also telling her that he still loves her despite everything that is happening.
2. "Woke up today, feeling the way I always do...". Which 2007 musical, starring a cross dressing John Travolta, is this lyric from?

Answer: Hairspray

This line is from the song "Good Morning Baltimore". "Hairspray" is set in the 1960s and it tells the story of Tracy Turnblad and her love of song and dance. Tracy is also against the segregation of black people, which existed at the time, and she is trying to get her favourite show "The Corny Collins Show" to become integrated. John Travolta plays Tracy's mom.
In this song Tracy is singing about her everday life in Baltimore.
3. "Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Nightingale, Blackbird, how is it you sing?". Which gruesome musical, about a barber seeking revenge on the judge who had him deported, is this lyric from?

Answer: Sweeney Todd

This line is from the song "Green Finch and Linnet Bird". It is the only song Johanna (Sweeney Todd's daughter) sings. She is played by Jayne Wisener. "Sweeney Todd" was directed by Tim Burton and the character was originally in a story in a "Penny Dreadful" (a sort of short story published in several parts in the 1800s, with each part costing a penny) entitled "The String of Pearls".

The musical was originally on the stage in 1979 and was created by Stephen Sondheim. "The Demon Barber" (of Fleet Street) is what Sweeney Todd is known as. This song is about how Johanna feels caged like a bird in the Judge's house.
4. "Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd, Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo". Which much loved musical from 1965 is this lyric from?

Answer: The Sound of Music

This musical is about a young nun named Maria, who becomes governess for the Von Trapp children. Their mother is dead and their father is very strict so the children are unhappy. Maria gets their spirits up by singing and dancing and she soon falls in love with their father.

This song is called "The Lonely Goatherd". It tells the story of a goatherd and is told by Maria and the children, with puppets and with the lyrics of the song. Maria is played by Julie Andrews and her character has seven children to look after! The other options for this answer were made in 1964 "My Fair Lady", 1952 "Singing in the Rain" and 1939 "Gone with the Wind"- this one isn't even a musical!
5. "Summer lovin' had me a blast..." This lyric comes from a film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John but which is it?

Answer: Grease

This is from the "Grease" song "Summer Nights". The film was made in 1978 and was directed by Randal Kleiser. The film tells the story of Sandy and Danny, who have a summer romance then meet again when they find out they go to the same high school. Sandy is as good as gold whereas Danny is a bad boy greaser. John Travolta plays Danny and Olivia Newton John plays Sandy.

In 1982 a sequel was made starring Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer but this time with the roles reversed, he is the goody two shoes and she is the bad girl. In this duet between the guys and the girls of the film they are singing about how great their summer was.
6. "This is Halloween..." Which Tim Burton film is this lyric from?

Answer: The Nightmare Before Christmas

This is from Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas". It is sung by the villagers of Halloween town. The film was made in 1993 and is about the Pumpkin King Jack Skellington. Jack has never heard of Christmas before so when he discovers it, he tries to bring Christmas to Halloweentown, by kidnapping Santa and taking his place! Santa is then kidnapped by the evil Oogie Boogie and Jack realises that Halloween and Christmas just do not mix!
