The film won five Grammys and two Golden Globes. The original Broadway musical was based on Maria Von Trapp's memoir, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers".

"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" was released in 1968 and starred Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes. The story was based on the 1964 novel by Ian Fleming (who also wrote the "James Bond" stories!) with adaptations to the script by Roald Dahl and the Director, Ken Hughes. The majority of the film was shot in England with a few scenes in Germany and France.

"Annie" was released as a movie in 1982 after its success on Broadway. The story was originally taken from the 1924 comic strip "Little Orphan Annie", by Harold Gray. The film starred Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Tim Curry and Aileen Quinn. It was nominated for two Oscars at the 55th Academy Awards in 1983.

"Mary Poppins" was released in 1964 and starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. It was produced by Walt Disney. The story was taken from a series of books by P.L. Travers, who wrote a total of eight books about the magical nanny between 1934 and 1988.

At the 37th Academy Awards, the film won five Oscars including Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Original Song and Best Visual Effects, and was nominated for eight others, more than any other Disney movie (as of 2013).

"My Fair Lady" was released in 1964 and starred Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. The film was adapted from the stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, which was itself adapted from the book "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw.

"My Fair Lady" won eight Oscars at the 37th Academy Awards (including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, and Original Music Score), as well as three Golden Globe awards and a BAFTA award!

"South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" was released in 1999, following the success of the "South Park" television cartoon series, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

The movie received a nomination for Best Original Song for "Blame Canada", which was performed at the 72nd Academy Awards ceremony by Robin Williams. Due to its controversial nature, he performed the song with black tape over his mouth, to make a statement about the irony of censoring a song from a film about censorship.

The musical developed a cult following from its early 1970s when it toured theatres in London before moving across the Atlantic, and the film only added to its success.

It is considered to be the longest-running cinema release ever (as of 2013), having been shown regularly in theatres since 1975.

"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971) is the original movie version of Roald Dahl's book, "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" (1964), starring Gene Wilder. The plot of the film deviates from the original story to such an extent that Roald Dahl rejected it, refusing to allow permission for a film sequel of his novel, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator".

It is based on the life of American frontierswoman, Calamity Jane, although is not thought to be very factual. The film won the Oscar for the Best Original Song (for "Secret Love") at the 26th Academy Awards.

"Little Shop of Horrors" was released in 1986, starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin, and directed by Frank OZ. It was adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, which itself was adapted from an earlier film, "The Little Shop of Horrors" (1960), directed by Roger Corman.

The musical film was nominated for two Oscars at the 59th Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects and Best Original Song (for "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space"), and was the first song to be performed at the awards which required censoring (but certainly not the last - see Question 6!)
