Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first film to reference ornithologist (bird expert) James Bond, whom Ian Fleming named the character after?

Answer: Die Another Day

Colonel Moon plots to take control of South Korea, via a laser satellite called the Icarus. After a mission in North Korea goes wrong, 007 is held in captivity for 14 months. After being released, he intends to find those who betrayed him. However, British billionaire Gustav Graves isn't who he seems...

When 007 is in Cuba, he picks up a book called 'Birds of the West Indies', authored by the real James Bond. The book was first published in 1936 and when Fleming was creating the character, he owned the book (Fleming was a keen bird watcher) and as to why he chose the name: 'I wanted the simplest, dullest, plainest-sounding name I could find, and 'James Bond' was much better than something more interesting, like 'Peregrine Carruthers.' Exotic things would happen to and around him, but he would be a neutral figure - an anonymous, blunt instrument wielded by a government department.' Published in an October 1965 interview with 'Reader's Digest'.
2. Which film title had its origins in government circles?

Answer: For Your Eyes Only

After a British ship with a communications device called the ATAC sinks, 007 is assigned to retrieve the device. However, the Russians are also interested in obtaining the device and one of their contacts is sent to seize it first. To make things more difficult, Bond is unsure who the contact is - bitter rivals Aristotle Kristatos and Milos Colombo accuse the other of being the contact. The investigation eventually discovers that it's Kristatos who is working for the Russians. Can 007 seize the machine before it's too late?

The phrase 'Eyes Only' was used in the secret service when referring to top secret documents. Since this is the only film (prior to the reboot in 2006) where M is absent, Bond is briefed by Bill Tanner instead and receives documents regarding his mission with the phrase 'For Your Eyes Only'.
3. 'The Property of a Lady' was the rumoured title for this film but due to a prolonged delay on the start of production, the rumour did not come to fruition. When eventually made, the title chosen referred to a specific piece of equipment. Which film?

Answer: GoldenEye

1986 - A mission in a Soviet chemical weapons facility sees friend and colleague Alec Trevelyan 006 killed. Nine years after, the satellite weapon GoldenEye has fallen into the wrong hands and it's up to 007 to search and identify the culprit. However, the mastermind behind the plot is no other than Alec Trevelyan - who was believed to be dead. Trevelyan intends to use the GoldenEye to destroy London and throw the country back to the stone age. Can 007 save London before it's too late?

'The Property of a Lady' was the rumoured title for what would have been Timothy Dalton's third Bond film, originally scheduled for a 1991 release. However, due to legal issues surrounding the ownership of the Bond franchise, the project never materialized with Dalton in the lead. As the years passed and with the legal disputes eventually settled in mid-1993 but with Bond 17 still in development hell, Timothy Dalton left the role in April 1994. Two months later, Pierce Brosnan was announced as the fifth actor in the role. Production eventually began on the 16th of January 1995 with Pierce Brosnan in his first Bond film.

The name 'GoldenEye' was inspired by a World War II operation - Operation GoldenEye. The aim of the operation was to keep an eye on Gibraltar, if Spain entered the war on the side of the Axis Powers. When Fleming wrote the 007 novels every year between 1952 until his death in 1964, his Jamaican home was nicknamed 'GoldenEye'.
4. David Hedison has twice played Bond's friend and CIA agent Felix Leiter. His first appearance in the role was in the 1973 film 'Live and Let Die'. In which film does he make his second appearance?

Answer: Licence to Kill

007 seeks revenge, after drug baron Franz Sanchez has friend and CIA agent Felix Leiter fed to the sharks. However, when told that Sanchez is not their problem and to resume his professional duties, Bond abandons his 00 status and pursues those responsible. Can 007 bring down those responsible and average his friend?

Prior to the reboot in 2006, six actors have played the character. Those in the 1960s were Jack Lord in 'Dr. No', Cec Linder in 'Goldfinger' and Rik Van Nutter in 'Thunderball'. Those in the 1970s were Norman Burton in 'Diamonds are Forever' and David Hedison in 'Live and Let Die'. Those in the 1980s were John Terry in 'The Living Daylights' and David Hedison in 'Licence to Kill'.
5. Over a period of 27 years and 16 films, screenwriter Richard Maibaum wrote or co-wrote all but three films. Which was the last film not to be written by Maibaum before his death in 1991?

Answer: Moonraker

Hugo Drax plots to populate the world with a master race in his image. In order to achieve this, he plans to commit genocide, via nerve gas. Can 007 and CIA agent Dr. Holly Goodhead stop Drax before it's too late?

Richard Maibaum was involved in the screenwriting process for every film except for 'You Only Live Twice', 'Live and Let Die' and 'Moonraker'. Novelist Roald Dahl penned the screenplay for 'You Only Live Twice'. Tom Mankiewicz wrote or co-wrote a total of three films, 'Diamonds are Forever', 'Live and Let Die' and 'The Man with the Golden Gun'. Christopher Wood was involved with two films, 'The Spy Who Loved Me' and 'Moonraker'.
6. Which is the only film to feature either East or West Germany, prior to reunification in 1990?

Answer: Octopussy

When a fellow 00 agent is killed while holding a fake Faberge egg, 007 is sent to investigate. However, when the real egg is put on sale at an auction the investigation quickly establishes that it's not just him that's interested in the egg, a exiled Afghan Prince called Kamal Khan is also interested. To make matters worse, Khan is collaborating with Russian general Orlov. The investigation further establishes that Orlov is plotting to set off a nuclear device in West Germany, therefore making western Europe an easy target for Soviet occupation.

Since 'Octopussy' is the only film to feature Germany during the Cold War era, it holds the distinction of being the only film in the series to actually feature the Berlin Wall.
7. Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were both offered the role of 007 for this film but due to contractual obligations, Pierce Brosnan had to withdraw, leaving the door open for Timothy Dalton. Which film?

Answer: The Living Daylights

When a 00 agent is killed during a training exercise, Bond is sent to find out why the KGB is bumping off agents of the west. However, a Soviet general defects to the west, only to be re-captured. Bond's mission is made more difficult when the general is collaborating with an arms dealer.

After 12 years and seven films, Roger Moore retires from the role and the search for a new actor becomes pertinent for the fifth time. Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were among those considered for the role and both actors were successful in screen-tests.

Timothy Dalton has been considered several times before. The first was in 1968 after Sean Connery departed from the role the first time, however he declined as it was felt that he was too young at that time. The second time was in 1981 when it was uncertain that Roger Moore would be returning, but declined once again due to the outlandish direction the series took in the late 70s.

Since Dalton had long been considered for the role, he was once again one of the candidates. However, the role was once again turned down because he was starring in 'Brenda Starr'. Brosnan was then offered the role but declined due of contractual obligations to the TV series 'Remington Steele'.
8. What was the first film to feature unified Germany as a location?

Answer: Tomorrow Never Dies

When the Chinese prove difficult in giving media baron Elliot Carver broadcasting rights, Carver plots to start World War III between them and the British. 007 is sent to investigate. However, the Chinese also send one of their agent to investigate. Can 007 and his Chinese partner stop Carver before it's too late?

After being briefed by M, Bond is sent to Hamburg to infiltrate Carver's headquarters in order to recover the GPS encoder.
9. What was the first film to cast an actor or actress who previously won an Oscar?

Answer: A View to a Kill

Max Zorin plots to destroy Silicon Valley, therefore gaining a monopoly via the microchip market. 007 is sent to stop Zorin before it's too late.

Christopher Walken won Best Supporting Actor for the 1978 film 'The Deer Hunter', seven years before appearing as Max Zorin in 'A View to a Kill'. Halle Berry was the second to do so, winning Best Actress for the 2001 film 'Monster's Ball', one year before appearing as Jinx Johnson in 'Die Another Day'.
10. Which film title is also Bond's family motto?

Answer: The World Is Not Enough

Former KGB agent Viktor Zokas, a.k.a. Renard, plots to nuke Europe with a nuclear bomb. However, Elektra King acquires her fathers oil business after he is murdered at MI6 HQ and 007 is sent to protect her from any harm. To make matters worse, M goes missing and Elektra isn't who she seems...

'The World Is Not Enough' is an English translation of the Latin phrase 'Orbis non sufficit'. The title is directly taken from 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', when Bond visits the College of Arms and learns that it is the family motto.

The title appears as a piece of dialogue, during the climax:

Elektra King: 'I could have given you the world.'
James Bond: 'The world is not enough.'
Elektra King: 'Foolish sentiment.'
James Bond: 'Family motto.'
