Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What brought the gang together this time?

Answer: Rueben had a heart attack.

Reuben Tishkoff (played by Elliott Gould) had contributed land for the building of a new casino by Willie Bank (played by Al Pacino), believing himself to be a partner in the new venture. When Bank cut him out of the deal, in a most ruthless fashion, Reuben had a heart attack and the gang was reassembled for the purpose of exacting revenge on Bank.
Ocean first approached Bank and offered him a chance to restore Reuben's share of the casino, but Bank refused.
2. What did Ocean respond when asked where Tess and Isabel were?

Answer: "It's not their fight."

When Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney) and Rusty Ryan (played by Brad Pitt) first reconnected after Reuben's heart attack, Rusty asked Danny where Tess was. Tess was Danny's wife and was played by Julia Roberts in the first two films in the franchise.) Danny's one line response implied that Tess did not know Reuben well enough to want revenge, but was more likely a quick way of explaining why Roberts wasn't in the film.
3. What was the name of the new casino that was the focus of the film?

Answer: The Bank

Willie Bank named the casino after himself, while taking a hand in all aspects of its construction. He even went so far as to sue his architects so that he could claim full credit for the design. This was the fifth casino he had built, so the fact that he named it after himself suggested that he felt it was his best achievement.
4. What award was Bank determined to win for his casino?

Answer: The Five Diamond Award

Every casino that Bank had previously opened had won this prestigious award, and he was determined to win it for a fifth time. This egotistical drive was the weakness that Ocean's gang needed to start their revenge plot. Part of this plan involved disguising Saul Bloom (played by Carl Reiner) as Kensington Chubb and deceiving Bank into believing that he was the judge for the award.
5. Some people had to undergo a lie detector test as part of the hiring procedure. How were Rusty and Danny able to get their plant to pass these lie detector tests?

Answer: by having him place a tack in their shoes

If the interviewee applied pressure on the tack with his or her foot during the control questions, the pain would cause their stress reactions to elevate the same as if they were lying. This way when they reached the questions that they had to lie about, the reactions would appear the same and not give away the lies.
6. Who or what was the Greco?

Answer: the security system that tracked players

The Greco was the name of the artificial intelligence system used to keep track of players and detect cheaters, by measuring biofeedback information from winners. If genuine surprise and delight wasn't registered by the system, then the player obviously expected to win and must therefore be cheating.
It was kept in an impregnable room, could not be shut off and was monitored constantly. If it sensed that it was under attack it would shut itself down, lock the room and take three and a half minutes to reboot. Anyone in the room at this time would be unable to get out for that time.
7. Why was a tunnel being dug underneath the casino?

Answer: to simulate an earthquake

This simulated earthquake was used on two occasions in the film. The first time was to force Bank into putting an evacuation plan on paper, for safety's sake. The second time was to effect the group's exit strategy and cause a wide scale evacuation of the casino (after a series of shocks). This evacuation was made possible by the evacuation plan that Bank's was forced to endorse.
8. What did they do to the judge (for the award that Bank coveted), making sure that the casino would not win?

Answer: all of these things

The judge, referred to in the credits as only the V.U.P. (very unimportant person) and played by David Paymer, was subjected to all kinds of indignities, including watching Saul, as the decoy judge, receive V.I.P. service when checking in, and being unable to get a table at the restaurant of his choice. Because Bank's people were focusing their attentions on Saul, they were unaware of the indignities being dumped upon the real judge.
9. Why did they have to bring Terry Benedict in on the action?

Answer: They needed his money.

The tunnel digger they were using to burrow underneath the casino died and they had to get hold of another one, fast. There were only two in existence, both having been used to dig the tunnel between England and France. The second one could only be acquired for a great deal of money, money that they didn't have.
Since it was essential for their exit strategy, they couldn't do without it, and so they approached Benedict (played by Andy Garcia) for the funds.
10. What thing did Benedict want them to do?

Answer: steal the diamonds

Benedict was not impressed with the new casino, that Bank had built, and said it cast a shadow over his pool. He was not content with the plan to ruin Bank's chances at winning the award and cheating him out of a substantial amount of winnings, and wanted the diamonds stolen as well.

He claimed that he didn't care what they did with them, as long as Bank didn't get to keep them. For this promise and a percentage of the profits, he provided money for the second tunnel digger.
