When a boy falls into the pyramids, the world is shocked to see him bounce off an inflated replica. Nations around the world scramble to protect their landmarks when they realize the real pyramid has been stolen.

When Gru's assistant Dr. Nefario tells him the crime of the pyramids has made other villains look lame, Gru snaps into action! As a villain, Gru could not let this happen. He decides to steal a shrink ray and steal the moon. Gru tells his minion henchmen it will top the crime of the pyramids and make the world do whatever they pleased. His plan is that with the moon, the world will offer to do anything to get it back.

Gru's minions carry out Gru's plans but are not dangerous. They speak gibberish and love to have fun. Many times Gru has to remind them to behave. They live in the secret laboratory underneath Gru's house and help Dr. Nefario, Gru's assistant.

The Bank of Evil is not impressed with Gru because he is an older villain and his plans have never had any big results. The Bank of Evil agrees to help Gru only if he can obtain the shrink ray needed for his plan. After numerous failed attempts to break into Vector's house, Gru watches as three orphan girls approach Vector's house. He hopes to see some action, but to his shock Vector invites the girls into his home because they are selling his favorite Girl Scout cookies. Gru gets an idea!

Gru pretends to be a dentist and his minions type his resume while he is at the interview. When they fail, Gru tells Mrs. Hattie that he has had a gap in his heart ever since his wife Debbie died. That gap can only be filled with children. Mrs. Hattie does not take him seriously until he gives her a compliment in Spanish. She calls the girls down immediately and lets Gru take them home.

Margo, Edith, and Agnes all scream and run for their belongings when Miss. Hattie tells them that they have been adopted. They start talking about what they think their new parents will be like. The man, scared to pieces, hands Agnes her unicorn. The girls think what Gru did was totally awesome! Agnes grabs her unicorn and tells Gru, "Let's go blow up another game!" For the first time, Gru starts to enjoy the girls.

They end up having fun at the rest of the park.

Gru has always wanted to go to the moon. He tried hard to impress his mom by telling her it was his ultimate dream someday. His mom told him she was sorry he was too late and NASA wasn't sending monkeys to the moon anymore. He tried to change her opinion by drawing a plan, creating a model out of macaroni, and building the rocket ship his self, but his mom always put him down with every attempt.

Gru is in the process of telling his minions that they are broke and some of them will have to find another place to live. During his sad speech, the girls interrupt and hand Gru their piggy bank with a few coins. The minions are so touched that they start giving Gru money too. Gru gets excited and they decide to build their own rocket ship without the bank! They decide to use whatever they have.

Gru, heart broken, returns to working on the rocket ship.

The minions, who love the girls also, find the ticket and one of them hands it to Gru because the recital is on the same day Gru plans to steal the moon. Gru tells his minion is a grown man, he does not go to ballet recitals. Inside his heart though, Gru misses the girls and plans an attempt to go.

After capturing the moon, Gru heads to find the girls at their ballet school. He sees a note from Vector telling him that they have been kidnapped. He first heads to Vector's house to try to save them but Vector escapes in his hovercraft. When the moon begins to grow from its shrunken state, Vector's hovercraft ship is destroyed. Gru has to convince the girls to jump to save them. Margo is the only one who hesitates. Gru tells her that if she will trust him, he will never let her go again. Margo jumps but she and Gru both fall.

The minions band together and make a minion ladder to save them.

Gru sets up a stage and lets the girls do a private performance of their ballet act for all the minions, Gru, and his mother. The girls do really well, but the minions get bored with the music and switch it. The minions and the girls convince Gru to join them in a boogie dance party.

Gru keeps his promise to Margo and they all become a family.
