Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening sequence to this film sees a dock worker singing a short ditty about being warm with his blanket. Three sailors come bounding off their ship ready to hit the streets of which major US city?

Answer: New York

New York is where the sailors are about to spend 24 hours. In fact the first thing they do is sing the awesome song and line "New York New York what a wonderful town, the Bronx is up and the Battery's down".
2. Frank Sinatra plays one of the sailors, but which character does he play?

Answer: Chip

The character Chip is 'snapped up' (slang term for the pair got together) by Hildy during the film. The character, played by Sinatra, is a statistical wiz, being able to give useless information about just about anything. He carries with him a guidebook from 1905 that states all the sites of New York. The problem is that the guidebook is well out of date and many of the sites described no longer stand, like the Hippodrome.
The character is a likable rogue who makes you laugh.
3. Gene Kelly not only starred in the film as Gabey but also had a credit for what other role?

Answer: Director

Kelly co-directed this film with Stanley Donen who also directed "Singin' in the Rain", "Royal Wedding", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Funny Face", "Indiscreet", "Damn Yankees!", "Charade", and "Two for the Road". The pair met in 1943 and their friendship produced the two big classics "On the Town" and "Singin' in the Rain", regarded by many as arguably one of the greatest musicals ever written.
Both fell out in 1955 and Donen focused on comedies.
4. The final member of the sailors trio is Ozzie. Who plays this role?

Answer: Jules Munshin

Jules Munshin makes up the trio and whilst Kelly and Sinatra became household names, Munshin is a name many would struggle to remember. His filmography was less impressive although he did appear in "Easter Parade" (1948), "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (1949), "On the Town" (1949), and "Silk Stockings" (1957). Munshin was regarded by many as an exceptional dancer but numerous injuries to his ankles and knees prevented him from taking on his career further, like the careers of Kelly and Sinatra.
5. The sailors are on the subway (or the place people ride in a hole in the ground) when a poster of Ivy Smith is put up for Gabey to fall helplessly in love with. The actual title of the poster was made up for the movie. What is the name given to Ivy Smith, which was seen as a monthly honor for the city's ladies?

Answer: Miss Turnstiles

Miss Turnstiles is a made up title and in fact is was never depicted in any shape or form as it is seen in the movie.

If you know otherwise please please feel free to contact me with information and I will be happy to update this blurb!
6. The sailors need to get around the city and manage to secure the services of Miss Brunhilde 'Hildy' Esterhazy, a loud, but pretty taxi driver. Who does she request must sit up front in order for the sailors to secure her driving skills and local knowledge?

Answer: Chip

Hildy is a fast speaking, quick thinking sharp New York gal. She knows what she wants and often does not get it. As a cab driver she is first seen reading a paper whilst about to knock off duty. But when she casts hers eyes on Frank Sinatra' blue eyes she is blown away and wants him to come to "my place".

The love is not immediately reciprocated but they do fall for each other in the end.
7. The trio, plus Hildy, enter a museum which houses pre-historic collections such as dinosaur bones and cavemen. They meet an anthropologist who falls for one of the sailors therefore spending the rest of the day with them. What is her name?

Answer: Claire Huddesen

Played by the stunning Ann Miller, Claire has a desire to study pre-historic man, however, after a little flirting from Ozzy she falls for him. In the museum one of the most amazing dance scenes is delivered with Miller hitting 500 taps a minute in a sensational show of pure sex appeal dancing.
8. Gabey is still searching frantically for Ivy Smith and decides to go alone to find her whilst the others disappear to do their own thing. When he finally finds Ivy what exactly is she doing?

Answer: Standing on her head counting

Ivy is practicing her routine for the devious Madame Dilyovska who is holding her to a deal that makes Ivy really unhappy. As a burlesque or coochie dancer, Ivy has to fulfill her agreement in Coney Island in order to pay back the Madame, or a letter will be sent to Ivy's parents explaining exactly what she is up to.

A sense of embarrassment makes Ivy continue with the deal. Fortunately the sailors find out what she does and Gabey doesn't care what she does. He also finds out that she is from the same town as him, Melville Indiana.
9. Gabey and Ivy agree to go out on a date. Where are they due to meet at 8:30 pm?

Answer: The top of the Empire State Building

All the trio end up there at the top of the Empire State building. Whilst they await the arrival of Ivy, the police and the museum curator are patrolling looking for the sailor who wrecked the dinosaur skeleton where the sailors met Claire. This causes a few issues for Ozzy who was responsible for the dinosaur collapse and therefore needs to hide.

But where can you hide at the top of the Empire State? Poor Ozzy has to hang over the ledge until the police and curator are satisfied that their main suspect is not there. Ivy then turns up and the triple crew hit the town.
10. The trio meet with their dates and decide to go to a night club which is packed full. However, how do they manage to get in?

Answer: Claire and Hildy pay the manager a bribe.

Now Gabey thinks that Ivy is a big star, but the reality is that she is just a normal girl who has been selected for a not so well known monthly title. The club is packed and there is no room until Claire and Hildy bribe the manager with dollars. They also mention that he needs to make a fuss of Miss Turnstile. The crew are given a table at the back of the club and the fun begins.
11. Gabey sadly loses his date Ivy as she has to go off in a rush. The other couple feel sorry for Gabey so Hildy contacts her friend Lucy to come and join the group. However, when she arrives Gabey is alarmed to see that Lucy is just not for him. What was wrong with her?

Answer: She has a stinking cold.

Lucy is seen earlier in the film when Hildy takes Chip back to her place which she shares with Lucy. However, when Hildy gets home Lucy is still there having called in sick. Wanting to show Chip a good time, Hildy persuades her to go to a movie or theatre. Lucy begrudgingly goes out. Later in the film Lucy meets with the crew and despite not being Gabey's kind of girl they remain friends and he walks her home.
12. As we enter the last part of the movie the three sailors (although only Gabey is in the trio, as it's a dream) take part in an instrumental dance routine for a play. What is it called?

Answer: A Day in New York: a Comedy in Three Acts

This part of the film shows Gabey wanting to woo Ivy, who has left his life. He dances with two unfamiliar sailors and two unfamiliar women; these characters depict his two friends and their girls. In the scene Gabey dances for Ivy and dreams of being with her once again.
13. Eventually the trio of sailors and the three girls meet up, but time is ticking for the boys. How do they get back to the ship?

Answer: By Shore Patrol

After the police and museum curator spot the gang there is a wonderful car chase across Manhattan to Brooklyn. After the gang shake off their pursuers they find Ivy in a burlesque club dancing for men with no morals. Ivy sees the gang and is so upset that she confronts Gabey and tells him that she is from his hometown and what the Madame has been doing.

However, the police and the curator find the gang and chase them around the club. Dressed as dancers the sailor trio dupe the police until Gabey's pants fall down revealing his sailors outfit.

The chase ends when the sailors jump into the back of a Shore Patrol van which whisks them off to the ship.
14. Roger Edens, Adolph Green, Betty Comden and Conrad Salinger all had a role to play in the fantastic music score, but who was responsible for the overall musical score, which was one of his finest works alongside "West Side Story", "On the Waterfront" and "Peter Pan" among others?

Answer: Leonard Bernstein

Born in 1918 Bernstein became one of the first American musicians to train as a composer who would reach worldwide acclaim. Not only was he a composer he also was an acclaimed pianist and was the leading light for the world class New York Philharmonic Orchestra. His talent saw him win an impressive 16 Grammy's but never an Academy Award on his own.
15. Ivy worked as cooch dancer but which island was her work place?

Answer: Coney Island

Many of New York's landmarks are seen throughout the film. It was one of the first films where the cast actually filmed in normal life scenes causing uproar for the local New Yorkers.

Coney Island is well known as the site of amusement parks and a seaside resort which can be found in the Brooklyn borough of New York City.
