Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We open with Fatty, the drifter, who has hitched a ride on a train. Where is he hiding?

Answer: In the water tank

Fatty nearly drowns when they stop to top off the water tank, so he has to emerge from his hiding place. He chooses a perch atop the caboose, where the brakemen (including Buster Keaton's father, Joe) are eating dinner.

Though the nickname "Fatty" is used in credits, and his character is often named Fatty, Arbuckle hated the name. It was the nickname other kids tormented him with in school. His friends called him Roscoe, except for a few who had personal nicknames for him. Buster Keaton called him "Chief".
2. When the brakemen catch Fatty stealing their dinner, they chase him along the train and finally toss him off. He wanders off in the desert, in search of water. What does he do to show us how thirsty he is?

Answer: He spits cotton.

At first Fatty is fooled by a mirage, but at last he finds a water hole. While he's bent over, drinking it dry, some Indians come along and shoot his bottom full of arrows.
3. Buster Keaton is the owner of the Last Chance Saloon, where the cowboys come to drink, dance, and gamble. His firewater "cures all known ills." Buster uses it as an eyewash, as a drink, and for what else?

Answer: To prime his revolver

Buster, jaunty in his top hat, fills a dainty glass, rinses his eyes, and takes a swig out of the bottle. Then he pours the used eyewash back into the bottle. When he spots a cowboy cheating at cards, he primes the revolver, shoots the cheater several times, then casually rolls the body through a trap door in the floor.

But Buster is not entirely without feeling on the occasion. He tosses in his boutonniere, then doffs his hat as a gesture of respect, before dropping the door shut on the corpse.
4. Next we meet Al's character -- a mean desperado named Wild Bill Hiccup. How does he light his cigarette?

Answer: He shoots it.

He and his gang ride into town to raid the saloon. Guns drawn, they burst in, and Al yells, "Hands up!" Everybody complies -- even the clock.
5. When Al's gang bursts in, Buster is as cowed as his patrons. But his bartender tries to play hero, leaping out with his own gun drawn. Al shoots him dead. Buster's only response is to casually set up a sign reading "Bartender Wanted". Fatty, fleeing the Indians, bursts in and bowls Al over, snatching his guns and shooting up the place. He runs off Al and the gang. When Fatty comes back inside, what does he want from Buster?

Answer: The job as bartender

We see a fleeting Keaton smile as Buster, crouching around the corner of the bar, keeps getting his hat shot off by bullets that evidently follow a unique trajectory. Alone in the saloon after Fatty runs the gang off, Buster unceremoniously kicks his bartender's body through the trap door and perches on the bar. Fatty comes in, keeps Buster's hat aloft for a while with gunfire, then flips the hat onto his friend's head.
6. The cowboys had followed Fatty outside to watch him drive Al and the gang of outlaws away. They return to the saloon and amuse themselves, only to have their idea of fun broken up by Alice, the Salvation Army lady. What does she scold them for?

Answer: Tormenting a young Black man by making him "dance" as they shoot at his feet

It's an appallingly racist scene to our modern sensibilities. The man kneels in gratitude beside Alice, crying glistening glycerine tears as she condescendingly pats his head. But at least they actually used a Black actor instead of the typical white actor in blackface.

It's Fatty alone, by the way, who gets the horse drunk, and that's later.
7. Alice falls for Fatty, for no apparent reason. But Al returns with his gang, ready to prove himself after his earlier humiliation. He begins to manhandle Alice rudely. Buster tries to intervene but is nearly made to swallow his cigar. He threatens Al with his revolver, only to have Al break the gun in half and cast it aside. But Fatty has a plan -- send Al "on a visit to the cellar". Buster opens the trap door. What does Fatty do?

Answer: He breaks bottles over Al's head.

Fatty breaks one bottle after the other over Al's head, but the only effect is to get Al's hair wet. He seems otherwise oblivious of the attack. After he smashes so many bottles over Al's head that even Alice is drenched, Fatty tries shooting Al. No effect. Buster watches in disgust.
8. After his failed attempts to put Al through the trap door, Fatty figures out Al's Achilles heel. What does he do to thwart Al?

Answer: He tickles him.

Once Fatty figures out Al's weakness, Buster joins in, grinning around the cigar clenched in his teeth. They tickle Al mercilessly then toss him out the door.
9. Al returns to kidnap Alice, hauling her off on his horse to his hideout. What does he do with Alice once he has her in his lair?

Answer: He tries to get her drunk.

Maybe he thinks if she drinks, he'll get pretty. But when Alice sees Fatty looking in the window, she throws her drink in Al's face and shoves him into the corner. Fatty reaches in through the open window and starts tickling Al. Al's ticklishness, by the way, reaches absurd proportions, to the point where Fatty tickles him through the soles of his boots.

The girl gets tied up in "The General" (1926), forced to dance with Al in "The Cook" (1918), and leered at by a man who undoes his tie in "Sherlock, Jr." (1924)
10. While Buster engages in a shoot-out with Al's gang, Fatty and Alice get rid of Al by shoving his hideout off a cliff. When it comes to rest at the bottom, splintered, what does Al do?

Answer: Reaches up and pulls down the window shade.

A battered Al, who landed squarely atop a mattress, pulls down the shade and goes to sleep. Fatty and Alice embrace and kiss.
