Once Bitten... Trivia Quiz

Virulence, contagion, and eventually death. Biting is typically a bad omen in films. Then again, sometimes it's comic relief. See if you know what happens, where it did, and who, quite simply, bites. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The bite of a vampire in Tomas Alfredson's "Let the Right One In" seals the fate of many characters. Who is the main vampire in the film?

Answer: Eli

A Swedish vampire film released in 2008, "Let the Right One In" made several appearances in international film festivals before a limited theatrical release, and as a result, it picked up a number of awards. The film follows two children, Oskar and Eli.

When it is determined that Eli is a vampire, Oskar finds it difficult to continue to love her, and Eli continues to struggle with her affliction. The film covers numerous different characteristics of vampire lore including the notion that vampires can not enter a room without being asked to do so.

When Eli bites one woman during the film, her descent into vampirism is clearly shown. When she arrives in the hospital and the blinds in her room are drawn open, she sets ablaze.
2. In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", which character was once bitten by a werewolf?

Answer: Professor Lupin

Directed by Alfonso Cuarón and released in 2004, "The Prisoner of Azkaban" is the third film in the "Harry Potter" series. A much darker tale than the first two, "Prisoner of Azkaban" focuses on many different things including Harry's uncovering of his past, the intrusion of the dementors, and the further advances of Lord Voldemort's forces. Remus Lupin, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher this time around, was an old friend of Harry's father. Of course, at one point, he was bitten by a werewolf, and his curse is acting up every once in a while, but nobody's perfect, right? When the full moon hits on an important event, Lupin has no choice but to transform, and the gang emerges from a subdued Whomping Willow with the intention to run.
3. The bite of a zombie in George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) turns the victim into a zombie.

Answer: False

In what many regard as the original zombie movie, the bite of a zombie means very little. Future iterations of the classic zombie tale, including George A. Romero's follow-up, "Dawn of the Dead", feature zombie bites as a source of virulence, spreading the zombie virus further.

In "Night of the Living Dead" however, we're presented with a much more logical explanation to the phenomenon: radioactive gases from a space probe to Venus. Go figure. "Night of the Living Dead" has been remade countless times, and George A. Romero continued his "Of the Living Dead"/"Of the Dead" series for many decades after.

In 1968, the film grossed $42 million which, by standards forty years later, would have amounted to nearly $700 million in revenue.
4. Which actor is bitten by a genetically-enhanced spider in the 2002 film "Spider-Man"?

Answer: Tobey Maguire

Directed by Sam Raimi (known for "The Evil Dead" and "Drag Me to Hell") and starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco, "Spider-Man" was one of the most popular hit films of 2002, earning over $800,000,000 in revenue. According to the film, the eponymous superhero is bitten by a radioactive spider at Columbia University and as a result gains superpowers including the ability to scale walls and to shoot webs. Since its debut, the "Spider-Man" series has spawned many sequels and its films persistently appear as some of the top-grossing films of its time.

Some credit it with being one of the first series of films to start a slew of superhero movies.
5. The bites of many of these creatures in a Samuel L. Jackson film result in many casualties. The movie is set at 40,000 feet. What are the creatures?

Answer: Snakes

Originating as a viral internet concept, "Snakes on a Plane" manifested through the workings of blogs and internet forums to become one of the most highest-anticipated action films ever pushed through the medium. Envisioned as a B-Movie, the film stars Samuel L. Jackson as a cop escorting a suspect across the Pacific from Hawaii to Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, the mob sets snakes on the plane (the title does not lie) and sprays everything with really strong pheromones. Go figure, all Hell breaks loose and Jackson has to deal with a lot of dangerous snakes... and land the plane. Directed by David R. Ellis, known for "Final Destination 2" and "Cellular", the film went on to gross $60 million.
6. One man hides in an outhouse to escape a horrifying creature, but ends up getting eaten anyways in which Steven Spielberg film?

Answer: Jurassic Park

In this particular scene of the film, based on Michael Crichton's novel of the same name, the attorney, Donald Gennaro, flees to an outhouse along the automated tour route after the emergence of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Despite this, the carnivore destroys the outhouse and devours him inside. Similar situations arise in all of the films in the series. The original film starred Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. Taking in close to a billion dollars in the box office, it became one of the highest-grossing films of the nineties. Though at the time of its release it became the highest, it was surpassed by "Titanic" shortly after.
7. Only two actual victims are shown in what 2004 shark film?

Answer: Open Water

Initially made for just under $150,000, the film grossed over fifty million in theaters. Purchased through Sundance, the film gained a fair amount of popularity for its sobering subject matter. Based on a story of two divers accidentally left behind by their scuba group, "Open Water" examines the experiences had by the duo as they drift through the sea. Soon, jellyfish, sharks, and other fish begin to recognize them as food... and begin nibbling.
A sequel, "Open Water 2: Adrift", was made two years later, but suffice to say it went straight-to-DVD.
8. Perhaps a more comical side to 'biting', in the film "There's Something About Mary", Ben Stiller is bitten in a less-than-pleasant place by which of these?

Answer: Dog

Making slightly under $400 million overall, "There's Something About Mary" (released in 1998) was one of the most successful film comedies of its day. Created by the Farrelly Brothers, a directing duo also known for their works "Me, Myself, and Irene", "Dumb and Dumber", and "Shallow Hal", the film is about Ben Stiller's character, Ted, trying to meet up with his lost high school prom date, Mary (played by Cameron Diaz). Chasing her down to Florida, he discovers that she has more than one admirer. The scene in question involves Ted arriving at Mary's house whereupon he is attacked by her roommate Magda's small dog. Suffice to say, he was bitten in one of the more embarrassing locations.

The scene ends with the dog accidentally leaping out the second story window- he's later seen in a dog full-body cast.
9. Sir Anthony Hopkins won the 'Best Actor' Academy Award for his role of cannibal Hannibal Lecter in which film?

Answer: Silence of the Lambs

Nominated for acting roles in four different films in the nineties, Sir Anthony Hopkins won in 1991 for his role in "The Silence of the Lambs", a film based on a novel by Thomas Harris. The film also won 'Best Picture', 'Best Actress', 'Best Director', and 'Best Screenplay' and has since become one of the most celebrated psychological thrillers ever produced. Known for eating his murdered victims, Dr. Hannibal Lecter is found in a Hospital for Criminally Insane patients.

At one point in the film, he escapes and uses a man's face in order to stow away in an ambulance and make his way to the airport.

In the first sequel, "Hannibal", a scene is shown in which Lecter sautés a man's brain.
10. In the 2007 horror-comedy "Black Sheep", a bite from a mutant sheep turns people into sheep themselves.

Answer: True

Set in New Zealand (go figure... sheep, right?), this film pokes fun at another were-animal concept. In this movie, the main characters are plague by evil, rabid sheep. When these sheep decide to stop mutilating their victims and instead decide to simply bite them, the result is an odd were-sheep creature.

By the end of the movie, however, many of these creatures find themselves cured by an antidote. The film remained low in the international box office and as a result had a low box office gross. Nonetheless, it ended up popular as a cult horror film and was released on DVD by the Dimension Extreme label (much like Dario Argento's "Mother of Tears" and the remake of "The Wizard of Gore").
