Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I got my Oscar for playing a frustrated housewife in the '70s. My husband, in the movie, was a football coach. The question is who wrote the book that created my character?

Answer: Larry McMurtry

Cloris Leachman won for 'The Last Picture Show' playing Ruth, who drifted into an affair with one of her husband's team players. Some team, eh? The book was written by McMurtry, who translates well to screen. As in 'Terms of Endearment' and 'Lonesome Dove'.
2. I won a Best Director award for 'The Godfather' Or did I? You tell me. Yes or no?

Answer: no

While 'The Godfather' did very well at the Oscars, the directing award went to Bob Fosse for 'Cabaret'. A tie with Coppola, who won two years later for 'The Godfather, Part 2', would have been sensible.
3. I was the oldest one in the bunch who won an acting Oscar in the '70s. I am?

Answer: George Burns

Burns, who won for 'The Sunshine Boys', was five years older than Douglas. All of these won in the Supporting categories.
4. What gives? This film won multiple Acting awards and didn't get Best Picture! Which film?

Answer: Network

'Network' is right; all the others did win Best Picture. 'The Last Picture Show', 'Cabaret', and 'Coming Home' would also be right, had they been given as options. Peter Finch and Beatrice Straight won for 'Network', by the way. Faye Dunaway, too.
5. I thought I might win mine when I was up for 'Morgan'. Instead I won for a supporting role in the '70s. Who am I?

Answer: Vanessa Redgrave

Vanessa got it for the title role in 'Julia'. I've never seen 'Morgan' but she was before up for 'Isadora' as well.
6. I've won more Oscars for my amazing acting than anyone else. Did I win one in the '70s?

Answer: No

Katherine Hepburn skipped through the 1970s, but got her fourth Best Actress in 1981.
7. I was nominated for my role as a possessed-by-a-demon child and then someone told me that a former Oscar winner helped with the voiceovers. Is that true?

Answer: Yes

Mercedes McCambridge did, in fact, swallow raw eggs to make the gutteral noises that Regan had in the film. And she had previously won for 'All the King's Men'.
8. How many former TV show stars, in well known sitcoms, went on to win Oscars for their dramatic acting in the '70s?

Answer: 2

Sally Field and Art Carney were both staples on TV before their '70s Oscars. Many winners went on to big things in TV but 'Gidget', 'The Honeymooners' and 'The Flying Nun' set these two on an interesting course.
9. She announced my name as the winner for my Oscar, which I chose to turn down. Which actor was put in that awkward position to say my name?

Answer: Goldie Hawn

Goldie got to do it, giggling throughout. She had won Best Supporting Actress the year before, so she got the honor of announcing that George C. Scott had won Best Actor for 'Patton'.
10. Our dads were nominated before the '70s but didn't win for their acting skills. But we did! How many of us are there as of 1979?

Answer: 2

Tatum O'Neal's Dad was up for 'Love Story' and Jane Fonda's was up for, at least, 'The Grapes of Wrath'. He won one later for 'On Golden Pond'.
