Annie was the Kansas counterpart to Glinda, as both were played by the same actress (Michelle Williams). Annie was a friend of Oscar Diggs but was engaged to a man named John Gale. Even though Oscar was heartbroken about this, he wished her luck in her marriage. In Oz, when Oscar met Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, he fell in love with her.

Each witch seen in the movie had an object that was used as the source of their magic. Glinda had a wand; Evanora had a necklace; Theodora had a ring. Glinda's magic appeared to originate from her wand. This was in contrast to (for example) Evanora's magic. Although her source was a necklace, the magic she used appeared to originate from her hands. Glinda's magic was white in color.

Gillikins (which according to the "Oz" novels live in the north) were not seen in the movie.
Glinda took Oz, the China Girl, and Finley, by bubble, to the land of the Quadlings where several Quadlings helped Oscar in his quest to stop the wicked witch.

Evanora (and later Theodora) was seen commanding Winkies (and flying monkeys) to stop Oscar from becoming the new ruler of Oz.

In their initial meeting, Glinda told Oscar how her father was murdered by Evanora. Glinda's father was the previous ruler of Oz, but Evanora wanted the throne to herself, so she killed him and was able to convince everyone that Glinda was responsible for her own father's death. Oscar and Glinda helped the citizens of Oz learn that Evanora was the wicked witch.

Oscar Diggs worked as a small-time magician in a traveling circus called Baum Brothers Circus (a reference to the author of the "Oz" books, L. Frank Baum). Many people thought Oscar was a terrible magician. He had two assistants: a long-time partner called Frank and a more recent (somewhat ditzy) partner called May.

When Oscar landed in Oz, he met the witch Theodora. She informed him about the prophecy that a man who had the same name as their land would defeat the wicked witch. (Oscar's nickname was Oz, just like the land of Oz.) The following morning, they took off to the Emerald City to meet Theodora's sister, Evanora. Along the way, they met a monkey named Finley and an unnamed china girl.

The wicked witch attacked her village and destroyed much of it. Oscar didn't meet Glinda until after being sent by Evanora to kill Glinda (Evanora having tricked Oscar into thinking Glinda was the wicked witch).

Evanora had tricked Theodora into thinking that Oscar had fallen in love with Evanora. This caused Theodora to be heartbroken. To help Theodora over her heartbreak, Evanora offered her an apple. This apple ended up removing all of Theodora's goodness and caused her skin to become green.

After destroying Evanora's source of magic, Glinda banished her from the Emerald City. This was a result of (among other things) killing Glinda's father. Glinda used her magic to toss Evanora through a window but a couple of winged monkeys caught Evanora and took her somewhere else.

Although the ruby slippers are associated with the Wicked Witch of the East, there is no mention of them. In the movie, Evanora's (who was the Wicked Witch of the East) source of magic was not the ruby slippers but rather an emerald necklace which got smashed near the end.

The movie ended with Oscar remaining in the land of Oz to rule over the citizens. However, most people believed Theodora had killed him and he was only able to appear as a head. The only people to know he was still alive were Glinda, Finley, the China Girl, Knuck, and the Master Tinker.
