Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very opening sequence in the movie is a performance of the song "Never Been to Me" by Charlene. Which character is the "singer" in this song?

Answer: Tick / Antony

Tick is the lead protagonist of the film. It's not entirely clear during the film where Tick's sexual orientation lies but as the movie progresses, we learn he has a wife and a son that his friends know nothing about. He is referred to by his wife as "the best in the business", a title he learns about from his son, Benji.

Bob doesn't show up until much later in the film and Bernadette is not in the opening scene. Felicia IS in the sequence, but not as the main performer of the song, she comes out and dances a little with Tick.
2. When Tick takes the phone call in the dressing room, after his performance in the opening scene, what are the first words he hears on the other end of the phone?

Answer: "Ding dong, Avon calling"

The "Avon Calling" ad campaign was originally introduced in 1954 and has now become known worldwide! The lines are spoken by Tick's wife, someone who none of his friends (and us) know anything about until later. She phones to ask him if he will do a show in Alice Springs.
3. How did Bernadette's (Terence Stamp) husband "Trumpet" die?

Answer: He was peroxiding his hair at home and asphyxiated on the fumes.

At the funeral, Tick comments that he is surprised that at such a young age Trumpet could slip in the bathroom and die, but Bernadette corrects him, before letting out a sob. It is the death of Trumpet that leads Bernadette into going with Tick and Felicia on the road trip.
4. Which actor plays the overly obnoxious, utterly irritating Adam Whiteley?

Answer: Guy Pierce

Guy Pierce plays Adam Whitely (a.k.a Felicia Jollygoodfellow).
Hugo Weaving plays Antony Belrose (a.k.a Tick / a.k.a Mitzy Del Bra).
Terence Stamp plays Bernadette Bassenger (once known as Ralph).
Bill Hunter plays mechanic Bob.

Guy Pierce is also known for his work in "Memento", "L.A Confidential" and "The Hard Word".
5. When Felicia shows up outside "The Imperial Hotel" with the bus, she informs her companions she has purchased it from a few tourists for $10,000. What nationality are the tourists?

Answer: Swedish

Felicia comments "I met some nice Swedish tourists named Lars, Lars and... Lars and I coaxed it out of them for 10,000 bucks".
There is also a Swedish flag hanging in the rear of the bus when the girls first, rather dubiously, enter the bus to have a look inside of it.
6. When at the Corroboree in the desert, the "girls" do a performance of "I Will Survive", whilst wearing strange outfits and big floral hair. What colour is the outfit that Guy Pierce (Felicia) is wearing?

Answer: rainbow

Silver is the colour of the outfit that Felicia wears on the roof of the bus as they travel through the desert. Bernadette wears blue during this performance and Tick wears a yellow outfit with flowers on it. Felicia's pantsuit has rainbow vertical stripes, with extensively wide, stiff bell bottoms and no sleeves.

Many comments are made about the costumes that the main characters wear throughout the film. It is interesting to note, despite the acclaim for the amazing costume design, the film' had a tiny budget and the majority of the costumes were purchased at K-Mart, with the help of the costume designer's mother. She worked at K-Mart and had a 15% employee discount!
7. When the trio first get on the bus and are leaving, the crowd seeing them off is so loud and large, that it upsets a young woman, who is setting off on the "Philips Coast to Coast Challenge". Later in the film, we see this woman again, does she speak to the drag queens?

Answer: No

We first see the woman in the park directly across the street from the bus, as the trio is leaving and a large crowd are very loudly seeing them off. She is seen running along behind the bus as the bus is leaving the pub. We see her again later, as Tick is driving off the main road to go by the short cut.
She is seen again when the bus is inoperative in the desert. The drag queens see her and call out to her, with Tick commenting "Nice night for it". She ignores them and keeps running. Bernadette then mutters "What a rude woman."
8. When the bus breaks down in the desert, Felicia takes out a guitar and a cassette deck and tries to play an ABBA song, what is the song?

Answer: "Fernando"

When Felicia presses play and starts to sing, the first lines are "Can you hear the drums..."
Bernadette switches off the tape deck and comments "I've said it before and I'll say it again. No more ABBA."

"Mamma Mia" is the song that is played during the end sequence of the movie with Felicia and Tick performing the show for Benji.
Neither "Dancing Queen" nor "Take A Chance On Me" are in the film.
9. Felicia and Mitzy play a game of Snap in the bus, which Felicia wins. Felicia, for winning, makes Mitzy go in full drag queen regalia down the main street of Broken Hill. When Mitzy steps from the bus, she wears an entire outfit made out of what?

Answer: Thongs/Flip flops

The dress, which actually helped the movie earn an Academy Award, cost a whole $7. The entire costume budget for the whole film was somewhere around $5000. Despite their tiny budget, the film went on to win awards for Costume Design, and this thong dress, in particular, was one of the outfits loved by people the world over.
Originally, the director and costume designer wanted the dress to be made from credit cards, but it just was not doable for them at the time, so they turned to thongs and the rest as they say is cinematic history!

The dress is a short thigh length cotton dress, that essentially has thongs stuck over every inch of it and tied together. The matching handbag is also made from cotton with thongs stuck on it and tied together. The accompanying shoes are high platform heels, with rubber ties that wrap around the legs.
10. When the bus breaks down, Felicia comments "There is nothing like a new frock to brighten your day." as she comes out of the bus with a box full of paint. What colour does Felicia paint the bus?

Answer: Lavender

Felicia paints the bus because, while it was parked at Broken Hill, some people painted nasty comments along the side. Bernadette comments "If you think I'm going to watch Picasso take on the public transport system, you've got another thing coming."

The nasty words painted on the bus are in red.
When Tick sees the colour of the paint, he says "Purple?" to which Felicia responds tartly, "It's not purple, it's lavender."
