Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a detective in the film. His last name is that of a mythological god. What was his name?

Answer: Loki

Loki is a god of Norse mythology, known as both shape shifter and trickster god. Gyllenhaal gives, in my view, one of his finest acting performances. Detective Loki has solved every case he has ever been given. This adds to his personal frustration, and clouds his vision at times, when it comes to solving this case.

Some personal/improvisational traits were added to this character by Gyllenhaal (tattoos and a nervous eye twitch). He believed they gave Detective Loki a more authentic feel.
2. Hugh Jackman gives a stellar performance as the father of an abducted girl. What was the name of his character?

Answer: Keller Dover

I believe that this is Jackman's greatest acting job. As Keller Dover, his frustrations with the police investigation boil over. This leads, ultimately, to a turbulent moral quandary; let the police do their job, or take the law into his own hands to find his missing daughter.
3. Jackman's character confronts the suspected abductor of his daughter, as the police release him from custody. What does the suspect whisper to him?

Answer: "They didn't cry until I left them."

Alex Jones, a suspect with mental deficiencies, utters those words. He is thought to be the one who took Keller Dover's daughter and her neighborhood friend, as well. This confirms, in Keller's mind, at least, that Alex is responsible for the girls' disappearance. Keller, later, stakes out Alex Jones' house.

He sees Alex walk his dog, and then hears him singing; "Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg". This is the same song the girls were singing minutes before they went missing.
4. Driving rain, snowstorms, and chilling cold occur throughout the movie. In what state is the film set?

Answer: Pennsylvania

It takes place in the fictional town of Conyers, Pennsylvania. However, the film was actually shot in Conyers, Georgia. The state's locale is referenced in many ways throughout the film (i.e billboards, road signs, police vehicles, newspapers, etc). The film does include some geographical errors, however.

At the beginning of the film Keller and his son are hunting. They harvest a deer to share at Thanksgiving. Pennsylvania deer season doesn't begin until after Thanksgiving. Also the viewer sees a privately owned liquor store in the film, but liquor stores in Pennsylvania are state run.
5. Jackman and Gyllenhaal have already been divulged as actors in this film. Name the set of three thespians that completes this movies' ensemble cast.

Answer: Viola Davis / Melissa Leo / Terrence Howard

Melissa Leo won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2010's "The Fighter". Melissa Leo plays Holly Jones. Viola Davis won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2016's "Fences". Viola plays Nancy Birch (neighbor of the Dover's and mother of the other abducted girl). Terrence Howard has yet to win an Oscar, but was nominated as best actor in 2005's "Hustle and Flow".

He plays Franklin Birch (neighbor to the Dover's and husband of Nancy Birch). Gyllenhaal was nominated for best supporting actor in 2005's "Brokeback Mountain". Jackman was nominated for best actor in 2013's "Les Miserables".
6. What is the primary way that Jackman's character tortures the suspected abductor?

Answer: with boiling hot and freezing cold water

Keller Dover inherited an apartment complex from his father. He uses a bathroom in one of the units to build an ingenious "shower torture chamber". He utilizes this to try and get Alex Jones to talk (with very limited "success").
7. What clue links the missing girls, and past abductions, to the Jones family?

Answer: a maze

A maze or mazes are found on three separate occasions. Detective Loki finds a corpse wearing a necklace with a maze pendant. A second suspect (a man named Bob Taylor) has countless mazes drawn on the walls inside his house. Lastly, Loki sees a picture of Mr. Jones wearing the same maze pendant necklace (unbeknownst to anyone is the fact that the corpse and Mr. Jones are one and the same).
8. What other ominous clues are found at the second suspect's (Bob Taylor) home?

Answer: all of these

Although these discoveries help shed light on things, they are also "false" clues, as well. The bloody clothes are store bought, and covered with pig's blood. The graves are filled with dolls. The snakes seem to have no significance until it is later revealed that the Jones' raised snakes.
9. How does the Jones family incapacitate their abducted victims?

Answer: giving them a drugged soda

The Jones' abduct children as part of a war on God. Some abductees survive, like Alex Jones and Bob Taylor, but most are disposed of (in some unstated fashion). The victims are kept in a "zombie-like"/hallucinogenic state through the use of some drugged elixir in soda bottles.
10. The Jones family's devious schemes are uncovered in the end. However, what becomes of Jackman's character?

Answer: It is a mystery.

The Jones' keep their victims in a pit in their backyard (camouflaged by an old Camaro parked over the entrance to the pit). Keller Dover confronts Mrs. Jones about her crimes, but she pulls a gun on him. He is made to drink the "magic elixir", and is put in the pit. Detective Loki kills Mrs. Jones as he is about to arrest her. Keller is considered missing. Loki and the forensic team are performing a final investigation at the Jones' residence. Loki hears a feint whistle coming from the backyard.

It is left to the viewer's imagination as to whether Loki actually finds Dover, or just thinks he's hearing noises.
